Here is another acquisition for the WEN Blog moderator, the last printing of the short lived Image, A Periodical of the Visual Arts, published by Art and Technics Ltd. Image: 8, Summer 1952, includes a feature about George Mackley written by Thomas Balston. Included in the piece are 15 wood engravings, printed from the blocks, a bonus being the publication was printed on Basingwerk Parchment.
Balston included this quote, that he culled from Mackley’s wonderful instructional book Wood Engraving (published in 1948 by the National Magazine Company, London.) “Engraving does not require a special place for its practice. The work is accompanied by no mess, no smell and no noise, and there is nothing in it that makes the room untenable for other persons, except possibly the muttering of the engraver when the tool slips.”
