Travel nurse contract recap

Last week I finished my first 13 week contract as a travel RN Case Manager. Overall it went pretty well.

There were some issues the first few weeks due to ridiculous infighting between the CMs and about what things were whose responsibility that was clear to me was all being caused by one ridiculous SW who made everything a fight and took everything personally. She was also a traveler and when I started I was told she was becoming staff. In the end she must have angered the wrong person (once she literally got in a screaming match on the phone with an interpreter because she thought he was taking too long to ask questions) cause one day we just got told she wasn’t coming back. After that the whole team worked so well together.

All the other CMs and SWs were so welcoming and helpful. My biggest fear with traveling was that I am not a person who does well when I don’t know where things are what resources are available. I like being self sufficient from a deep seeded fear of being a burden. But everyone was always quick to answer questions or give tips. They all told me I adapted quickly and were ego boostingly sad when I left.

About a month before the end of my contract my manager asked me if I wanted to extend. I said sure. The pay was good (I saved in 13 weeks the same amount I’d been able to save in the past 5 years) and I was content and felt stable in my roll. But then the hospital corporate just never responded to the contract request from my company. After 2 weeks my recruiter suggested applying to a few other listings as back up. So I did.

I could have pushed harder to get the extension but within a few days of applying to other places I got offered a contact back down in OC California. It’s 3 12s nights working as a CM for the transfer center of one of the trauma hospitals. I am familiar with a lot of their processes because I have been on the sending end working with them many many times. It’s a bigger hospital than I tend to favor but I think since I will be transfer center and not dealing with actual patients on the floors it wont be so bad. The beauties of transfer center case management is never talking directly to patients/families and only dealing with the bringing in of patients and not the discharge issues.

I am happy that I will be back down in an area I know and around some friends. I am still not big on going to much (I did go to a Giants game while I was up there but nothing else touristy) so being able to just have dinner with a friend occasionally will be great.

Overall I am pleased with my decision to give travel nursing a try. 13 weeks flew by. Money was good. I felt like I was really able to help my patient population. Only had 1 issue with my manager where it felt like I was being thrown under the bus. Nothing really came of it and it was obvious she was just trying to blame her own miscommunication on me. Though that having happened just a few days after I was asked to extend likely played into me not being as willing to go out of my way to make the extension happen.

Here’s hoping the next contract goes as well.

My Employer Gave Me Covid

When the company I work for decided that cramming multiple staff at the individual contributor level into tiny badly ventilated rooms in order to give all managers and executives ego-boostingly huge offices to themselves, one of the excuses they gave for massively and pointlessly increasing our risk of catching C19 was that once the move was done, a health and safety assessment would be done to pick up any issues.

The sardine-en-ing was announced on 18 November. It took place on 22 November.

They just did the assessment today, February 18th 2022. Almost three months since the leadership team told us all that we weren't worth protection from a deadly virus, and six weeks too late for me personally.

Day 57 - The Last Day

Didn't sleep too well without my sleeping bag but I thought it was going to be worse. Plus, I was moral-boostingly industrious with the kit I hadn't lost. Maybe I am a different man. A man of the world. A man who can do things.

Used my yellow towel from the Pittsburgh game (thanks Austin) as a floor mat. Then emptied my linen laundry bag and climbed in. It came to just above my waist.

Also slept in full cycling kit which meant getting ready this morning consisted of standing up, squirting a water bottle in my face and brushing my teeth. Every cloud and all that.

Really looking forward to a long shower and permanently changing into what a soldier might call "civvy" clothes this evening. In fact, I'm generally looking forward to reclaiming my own identity and not wearing lycra.

Despite "sleeping bag gate" , nothing was going to bring me down after 125 of the best and most unpredictable miles of the trip yesterday. Losing your sleeping bag on the penultimate day is the second best day to lose it, anyway.

48 miles then. Easy? Not exactly.

After my horror day of punctures in the midwest, this was Alex's turn to get some rotten luck. In short, this was related to his tread-bare (if that isn't the proper term, it really should be) bike tyre which by this point had an enormous gash in it. Fully exposed intertube - not ideal.

Worried he might catch me taking a picture...

I pulled on my old JAK United top (see above) for a bit of good luck. JAK United is a football team we set up after we lost one of our best friends, Jake (JAK Jake Anthony Knowles). Proud to finish the ride wearing the colours with the badge on my chest. And he brought us good luck as Alex's punctures stopped when I put the top on. Thanks mate.

Arriving in Washington DC was fairly surreal after all those miles.

It was straight to the water so we could dip our wheels in. Here we are 57 days ago at the Pacific...

And 57 days later after dipping our heads in...

Little bit of US trivia for you: Washington DC is not a state. It's a place within the District of Colombia (DC) that sits in the state of Maryland.

Imagine that it's a bit like Vatican City in Rome. To add more confusion, Washington (without a DC on the end) is a state, but that's over on the west coast, just above where we started our trip in Oregon.

Forgive any minor inaccuracies there, but you get the drift. I don't have a future as a geography teacher, I know.

Or a politics teacher for that matter... it turns out Alex and I have spent our whole lives thinking the Capitol Building was the White House.

Here we are, finishing our journey outside the White House...

And here we are the following day outside the Capitol Building. A building we'd seen on TV and presumed to be the WH all our lives!

After a couple of celebratory beers in the city, we headed out to stay with Emily who is an old family friend of Alex. Their mums are great friends who've been on several holidays/adventures together themselves.

Emily's hospitality was, needless to say, incredible. She sorted us out with two ridiculously comfortable beds in the living room and we headed out for pizza and to toast cycling across this crazy country.

I endeavour to write some sort of self-indulgent retrospective blog post once I've had time to digest everything - people have already been asking questions that I'd like to answer.
