Painting this morning at the birthplace of historic preservation… the Steven’s-Lather house, and paying homage to the people with heart, soul and vision for historic preservation as well as civic pride and passion for history. The Steven’s-Lather house is a four-story residence on S. Battery St. overlooking White point Gardens with a view of Fort Sumter. It was built in 1843 by a prosperous merchant name Samuel N. Stevens. The property sold in 1870 to Colonel Richard Lathers, a millionaire cotton broker, banker, and executive from New York. After serving in the union army during the Civil War, Colonel lathers purchased the home with the intent to host northern dignitaries and reconcile relations between north and south. The Career Not Taken

I like to think that we are all born to make an impact in this world, no matter how large or small, the change you effect is going to directly or indirectly affect someone else. Robert Frost’s poem, “The Road Not Taken” comes to mind when I think about all of our stories from the Inn. Being an Innkeeper is not a career choice that is heavily sought after in this day and age and while most of our friends are knee deep in their professional careers or family lives, my husband Blake and I are definitely taking, “the road less traveled by.” Deciding to dive deep into a realm of hospitality that we weren’t familiar with has gifted us with an endless supply of lessons and an equal bounty of reward.

Meeting so many new and fascinating visitors is such a privilege! We take so much pride in sharing our rich Jonesborough history with every person that darkens our doorstep. Now, we don’t just host by educating passers by of the creative activities and attractions in town, we also strive to take the very best care of our weekday and weekend travelers while they are guests at our Inn. Providing a place for folks to lay their head and preparing breakfast for strangers carries more weight than most would think. To be an Innkeeper one must have three things: You have to maintain a state of humbleness, you’ve got to have the patience of a saint, and you must carry deep pride in your heart for your hard work and craft.

We certainly don't leave a list of EVERY chore we complete and wave it in the faces of our “lucky’ guests. And when most people think of making a bed, I’m sure they think of their mother or father shaking their finger and croaking out the rest of list of childhood chores that terrorized all of us at one point or another. Here, at Eureka we try to embrace the silver lining of the “chore” at hand; by making the beds ever so carefully and hand ironing the pillow cases, when you double check and realize that you actually can bounce a quarter off of a finely made bed the end result is deeply gratifying in a way that is difficult to describe.

You have to be cut from a different cloth to enjoy the little things in an Innkeeper’s life. Scrubbing a bathroom floor brings its own reward, too! Imagine you have removed every smudge and spot and that the tiles are putting a twinkle in your eye, and you think to yourself, “This floor couldn’t be any cleaner,’’ then you give a swipe of the lint roller and what do you see? A speck of pepper perhaps, maybe a little dirt from the previous guests’ walk down Main Street. By taking that extra step you are going above the call of just sweeping and mopping the floor, you are rolling out the red carpet for the traveling politician, salesman, or honeymooner. There is always more to everything; more to clean, more to tell, more to imagine.

We have had every type of guest come through our doors in the four short years that we have been here. Some have been the descendants of Pocahontas and even descendants of the Mitchell’s have stayed with us! For those of you that don’t know the history of the Eureka; Robert and Harriet Mitchell were the very first folks to purchase lot #19 in 1797 and build their residence right here at what is now 127 West Main Street. It’s so funny the way that history has a way of coming full circle and integrating itself right back into modern life. It’s the unexplored avenues and the fresh vantage points we try to bring that create such vigor in our line of work. We are hopefully becoming the beacon of light for a new generation of Innkeepers. Day in and day out Blake and I are charting new courses for our business and future here in Jonesborough. We took the road less travelled by, and for us, it has truly made all the difference.
