Alexander Winton an early car manufacturer, was born in Grangemouth 20th June 1860.

The son of Alexander Winton, a manufacturer of farm implements, and Helen Fea he served an apprentice in shipyards on the Clyde River then young Winton emigrated to the United States aged 19.

or a few years he worked as an engineer on an ocean vessel. In 1883 he married a fellow Scot, Jeanie Muir McGlashan, and soon settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where a brother-in-law was already situated. The couple had six children. While employed in Cleveland as the plant superintendent of a furnace company, the Phoenix Iron Works, Winton entered a new business—bicycles.

 At first simply operating a bicycle repair shop, by 1891 he was making them. His firm participated in the great bicycle boom of the 1890s, making as many as 5,000 or 6,000 per year at its peak, but it was surpassed by the output of the leading bicycle manufacturers in Cleveland, the Peerless and White companies. All of the major bicycle makers in Cleveland eventually moved into "automobile"  manufacturing after the end of the bicycle boom, Winton was one of the first and he read everything he could find on the subject while perfecting his own engine designs and even built his own gasoline-powered bicycle, a very earlly motorbike. 

Winton unveiled his first “motor wagon” to the press in 1896. He incorporated the Winton Motor Carriage Company in 1897. In 1898, Winton Motor Carriage Company became arguably the first American company to sell a car to the general public with the introduction of the Winton Six.

The Six was the most powerful and technologically advanced vehicle of its time, and was the first car to cross America coast to coast. Always the promoter, Alexander Winton entered as many races as he could, winning more often than not, one of his most famous races was when he lost o Henry Ford, a loss that helped Ford gain investors to establish his first car company.

In 1900 Winton took one of his cars to France to compete in the Gordon Bennett Race, becoming the first American, (yes he was Scottish, but by then a US citizen,)  to race an American car in Europe.  Winton's racer suffered a broken wheel, putting him into a ditch.  Later that year, in the same car, he set a new world track speed record, driving fifty miles in one hour, seventeen minutes and fifty seconds, averaging a scary 38.54 mph in Chicago.

Winton continued building cars of advanced design well into the 20th century. He introduced innovations like external and internal brakes on the same brake drum, produced the first American diesel engine in 1913, and held more than 100 patents  i the motor trade.

Winton built cars until early 1924. He had also formed a subsidiary company, the Winton Gas Engine & Manufacturing Company, to build marine and diesel engines. His engine company continued to prosper until 1930, at which time it was sold to General Motors. Winton passed away two years later. 

While often forgotten or even unknown today, especially in his native Scotland, Alexander Winton was truly one of the great pioneers in his field. The second pic is the race he lost against Henry Ford
