Happy Thursday! . It’s like springtime here with rain and temps in the mid 60s. Perfect weather for sipping coffee and reading a good book, like The Violin Conspiracy- an #ownvoices mystery that celebrates diversity. . In honor of a mystery about a stolen Stradivarius violin I’ll ask this qotd: . If you were an orchestral instrument, which one would you be? . I would totally be a cello because it’s curvy and adaptable to many situations, just like me 😇 . . . . #theviolinconspiracy #brendanslocumb #theviolinconspiracy #knopfdoubleday #netgalley #netgalleyreads #newrelease #justout #happypubday #booksaboutmusic #mystery #mysterybooks #mysteryreadersofig #mysteryreadersofinstagram #mysterybookstagram #mysteryreaders #mysterynovel #thrillerthursday #bookblogger #bookbloggersofinstagram #bookbloggerlife #tessatalksbooks #booksandflowers #bookdragon #whodunit #booksandcandles #rainyday #rainydayreading #rainydayreads #bookrecommendations (at Lake Davidson) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZhICNeLd8m/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Violin Conspiracy deserves 6 stars. Ray McMillian is a black violinist and he is classically trained. Ray receives a violin from his grandmother that used to be her grandfather's. Only later does he find out its true worth. Great musical journey and mystery. Wonderful characters and a story that draws you in. Very entertaining book.

“Like many turning points in a life-especially in the life of a lonely kid who stuck mostly to himself…Ray’s life changed because someone else reached out across the the gulf and touched him” “You work twice as hard. You hold your head up high, and you keep doing what you do…don’t you ever apologize for being who you are or let someone make you feel bad for being Black” “Alone, we are a solitary violin, lonely flute, a trumpet singing in the dark. Together, we were a symphony” A promising author if I ever read one. This musically intoned novel featured one of my favorite instruments-the violin-and a strong black man-Ray McMillan-who plays it beautifully. His knowledge on the violin’s anatomy and similes when playing were visceral and beautiful. I was fully entertained through this novel that explored racism inside the classical music industry and outside. I loved how Ray remained respectful when he could, even getting in a snide remark about others’ blatant racist remarks. He, along with Grandma Nora and Janice, were my favorites. The connection between Ray and his grandmother was just beautiful, and it showed when Ray played her grandfather’s fiddle. I never truly considered that there was a lack of classical musicians who were of color-I’m glad I read this story.
