Had one of the most authentic NYC Jazz experiences last night in a beautiful brownstone from the 1800’s in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. Eric one of the owners and bass player was well informed of the rich Jazz history in the neighborhood and shared many stories of the musicians and clubs that were a huge part of the community in Bedstuy in the 40’s and 50’s. The band was incredible, extremely talented and passionate and acoustics were perfect with the high ceilings and carved mahogany on the walls and original hard wood floors. Debbie the other owner cooked up a fresh fish fry with corn bread which was so damn delicious, especially for some one who doesn’t eat much fish. To top it off it was byob, no $20 drinks like most clubs. They ended the night with some talented singers, saxophonist and pianist sitting in from the neighborhood and watched Eric practice with a younger upcoming saxophonist to ensure the continuity of a music and culture he truly loved. $40 gets you 3.5 hours of intimate Jazz and some amazing home cooked soul food that I can’t recommend enough.
