it’s five years from now, i’m at the peak of my career about to make a great move. it’s essentially a done deal, HR’s cleared me, I’m in my final interview. we have a fantastic time, i ace my answers, we both laugh politely. just as i’m about to leave, my future employer glances at my folder one last time and says “just a quick question, out of curiosity,” i laugh politely. “of course!” i say. “here it says that, you are… your own local micro-chernobyl?” the smile slides off my face. i know what will come next, the same words that have haunted me since they were uttered. i thank them for their time, wishing that maybe in an alternate universe somewhere, things are different for me.
