Uno Shoma「I don’t like myself so I haven’t seen my face much.」Talking about  himself at age 18. || AERA 21 March 2016 Translation
(AERA 2018 Foreword)
“There’ll come a day where I can’t just chase after people anymore. What I learned from my seniors is spirit.”
We will share an interview we had with Uno who was 18 years old at the time.

He had his high school graduation ceremony on the day of the cover photo-shoot. Local TV had been following him since that morning. “I don’t have many memories of high school. Because I don’t have friends. Even when I try to talk to them, I feel awkward.” But in reality he’s popular and is always surrounded by someone. However no one’s seen him open up about his feelings. He has a motto of “Men should stay quiet and just get on the ice.” However he’s eloquent once he is on ice. Instead of talking with his mouth, he speaks of his emotions with aura that overflows from his body fixes his slanted eyes on the audience.  He made his break this season. After acquiring the triple axel and quad jumps he joined the seniors fully,  and won a bronze medal at the Grand Prix Final, which competes for the top of the world. He successfully landed a quad loop at practice, which was yet to be landed successfully in official competitions. As he immediately captivated the figure skating fans, he’s incorporated a “layback eagle” into the second half of his free program, which is his signature move much like Arakawa Shizuka’s Ina Bauer.  Regardless to the fact that the technique was synonymous with a different athlete. Towards someone’s “So cool!” during shooting, he negated “I don’t like myself so I’ve hardly seen my face.” Although he criticized himself as usual, it’s by no means a negative mindset. “Because I can think that ‘I’m no good’, I can keep working hard (by thinking) ‘What should I do  next?’“  He has an insight that maintaining his current self after winning a medal at the end of last year in Grand Prix Final, caused him to slack during Four Continents Championship in February. He cannot repeat the same thing at World Championship in March.    “I think it’s just right for me to think that I’m no good. I don’t want to lose against the me from today. That’s what motivates me more than anything.”  source
