call me weird, but while I know Depeche Mode's first quote unquote great album was Black Celebration, I would argue that Some Great Reward absolutely was the work that raised the bar for all DM to come. Construction Time Again was, uh, mixed. But Some Great Reward is, honest to God, just fantastic. Maybe not quiiiiite as strong as Black Celebration, but Black Celebration onwards could not have happened without Some Great Reward.
#i'm not sure whether Some Great Reward quite counts as a great album (primary offender: Somebody)#but it's really really close#in the same way i wouldn't call Pretty Hate Machine a great album#but the TDS/The Fragile/Still/WT/Add Violence/Bad Witch (great albums/EPs) couldn't have occurred without PHM#depeche mode
