is your perception of the mainstream media solely based on what your parents recount from fox or sky news? has enough time passed between the event and now for professional journalists to verify sources? are you reading beyond the headline and the lead? do you understand why journalists phrase things in the way that they do?

don't get me wrong, there are certainly cases where that statement is true, however, I routinely see it applied to events that I later read about in an honest-to-god physical newspaper

anyway i got the stereographic projection working

i mean that's not a particularly clear visualization and i think the north pole point ends up at NaN and thus isn't rendered, but it's a proof of concept. now time to redo it in opengl, i guess? and try to also do the inverse map so there's actually a flat 'world map' render instead of a sparse collection of points, maybe.

the actual stereographic projection turned out to be incredibly simple codewise, since i already had all the component parts:

with pole and point being 3d points and plane being a plane/halfplane. i guess if i want to do the inverse i'd have to write in a sphere data structure + collision between a line and a sphere.

also i haven't wanted to say this in every single post i've made since they changed the editor but oh my god the new editor is so bad. current issue: a constant barrage of 'post contains unsupported markdown' popups that cover the post button. i assume every time i stop typing it tries to save the post as a draft and the save attempt checks the markdown and starts a popup. if i stop and start typing frequently enough it spawns multiple popups that start to cover the actual text field. also since the text box extends as you keep typing it's constantly scrolling down the screen until it's pushed the actual 'make post' ui off the bottom of the page and it's aligned on the bottom margin of the browser. listen. is a known thing. browsers support it. you can give it its own little scrollbox so it doesn't end up totally warping the entire page around it. you have to go out of your way to break basic html layout and yet basically every site i use these days does in fact go out of its way to style all its form elements in a way that breaks. i don't even have any custom stylesheets running any more!! this is entirely on tumblr!! aaa!!!

also i still habitually try to ctrl+a ctrl+c every time i make a post in the event it doesn't go through and that still constantly fails. ughhhhh at some point this is going to bite me when tumblr actually eats a post of mine and its constant draft-saving doesn't actually work, or w/e.

i am yeah! personally once i'm done my bsc in linguistics and psychology i plan on doing a masters in speech language pathology to become a speech therapist, so that's one option. also yesterday i interviewed for an entry-level summer job working in a branch of government that deals with writing and implementing policy on bilingualism in the government, and they were telling me a lot of the managers and stuff have linguistics degrees. alternatively you could work for an ngo that does language revitalization work, or learn to code and work in computational linguistics.that's just off the top of my head. google is giving me some wild shit like lexicographer, speech recognition engineer, and forensic linguist, all of which actually sounds really fucking cool? and there's always the stuff that's like, tangentially related but where they often hire linguistics grads cause the skills are applicable, like technical writer, travel agent, data analyst, employee relations advisor, mediator, editor...anyway this is probably more than you wanted lol but yeah linguistics is a really rich and rewarding field that doesn't get a lot of attention. i wish your friend luck!
