Impromptu Can We Discuss: Can We Discuss the Silver Fox?

No, this is not an ok thing for SSO to do, and there are industry examples of why. Let me walk the unfamiliar through the most recent Battlefront II controversy:

Not two months ago, Electronic Arts (EA) released Star Wars Battlefront II to massive criticism. The primary complaint was that progress in the game was locked behind loot boxes and micro transactions of the most aggressive and egregious kind. Loot boxes traditionally only give cosmetic rewards, but EA’s loot boxes rewarded abilities to characters, making the player stronger for sinking money. EA’s defense was that the currency can be grinded in the game, meaning all content is purchasable through play. Here’s the catches though:

1) The game already costs $60 USD.

2) One character is about $200 USD to fully upgraded, in a competitive first person shooter. Having a fully upgraded character in a competitive game is arguably the point, making this move very manipulative of competitive players.

3) To unlocked all of the content that came at release, a player would need to play about 5 hours a day, every day, for 6 years straight. On a smaller scale, to unlock a single character, it meant 48 hours of consecutive play.

4) They released a second game in this window, Shadow of Mordor, with similar though not as bad micro-transactions, which similarly did poorly because of the model (and its on controversy).

5) All of this ended with EA having about a 20% drop in their stock value, a huge loss in profit due to protests, they’re being sued by three states and a few countries for encouraging gambling, nearly losing their deal with LucasArts, and all ending with EA having to lower their costs and then pull micro transaction from the game to fix this. What they’re going to do, we don’t know yet.

TL;DR, EA got hit very, very hard for making this move, and sticking to their guns on it is at a huge cost. But EA can eat that cost, SSO couldn’t. Now, SSO’s case isn’t one-to-one with EA’s, but it is similar enough to make the comparison. 

1) It’s $75 USD for lifetime, the most cost effective membership option, which gives the player access to earning Star Coins in game through the allowance.

2) The already existing fox costs $17 USD, and this silver fox costs a minimum of $65 USD. Yes, you get Star Coins, but that’s not why people would be buying these bundles right now.

3) To purchase the red fox means 5 weeks of play, if you already have membership. The silver fox is in no way obtainable in any other way. There’s nothing inherently wrong with exclusives, but when these are the only two options for a new, very highly demanded pet, it’s manipulative.

4) SSO has no other games to fall back on, so if this game hurts from this sales campaign, it’s all SSO has.

5) There hasn’t been any legal action towards SSO, this only happened this morning, but if any of the above did happen to SSO, they could not just shrug off those losses. Considering the number of parents I’ve seen respond, it is a possibility, and the precedent is not in SSO’s favor.

SSO’s defense is that these pets are very difficult to make, regarding the already high price of the red fox, that these aren’t requirements to have, and that this is a bonus to already existing sales.

To that first argument, it’s...ok. It’s not a very good argument, considering that the most profitable model is micro transactions in small increments. This is your mobile game models, or your League of Legends and Overwatch skins, or World of Warcraft offers. Small purchases that can be earned through playing the game, but expedite a not very difficult process or remove low chance stakes. So while there is something valid in what SSO is saying, there are much better models to put these pets on, particularly since they, unlike horses, don’t unlock content or stat sets and are purely cosmetic. While it is true SSO gives its players the Star Coin allowances, that doesn’t mean that system of small purchases is invalidated. It just means SSO fails to use it.

To the second argument, this is really a massive “F U.” It’s trying to avoid the responsibility of the actions SSO makes by saying it’s the player’s fault for spending the money, not SSO’s for making the opportunity. It’s corporate as fuck, and largely diabolical when broken down. It’s your fault for spending your money, not SSO for asking you to spend an offensively large sum of it. That’s like a casino blaming you for gambling there. The point of their business is for you to gamble, but they need to be responsible too. The point of SSO is for you to spend money, but they still need to be responsible about it.

To the third argument, I have to agree with the frequent point from players that there was a sale last week. Adding this kind of offer only encourages unhealthy whale behavior. For those of you not familiar with the term “whale,” it’s a games industry term for someone who willingly will sink hundreds of dollars into a game, usually for status and/or progress. SSO already, as a more expensive MMO, is prime for whales. Adding this offer now only encourages players to be whales, and for a younger target audience, that’s a morally questionable standard to be encouraging. For the older audience and the parents playing, that kind of spending will eventually burn out.

Further, to the argument from some players that SSO needs money to pay its employees, yes, they do. But that doesn’t justify SSO’s expectation for players to just hand over $100+ USD for their game. It makes the game massively exclusive, and damages the company in the long term to only rely on their whales. While you may be able to hand over that money, or have no interest in this exclusive and therefore aren’t bothered by not getting it, that doesn’t mean this isn’t manipulative of people who are very big fans of the game or want features like this or completionists who are compulsively driven to own everything. SSO needs money, but if it wants to build trust with its player base to continue giving it money, it needs that money to be rewarded equally and fairly, or players won’t spend their money here. If the reward isn’t worth the sink, no one is going to buy it. So long term, SSO will be losing money. Instead of encouraging people then to spend money they may not even have because the game needs it, encourage SSO to more fairly reward its players to justify that spending.

Additionally, the people who would lose money in this situation is the executives, not the average employee. If SSO goes under, sure, they all lose their job, but they have to pay everyone’s salaries first or it’s a legal case. The only people losing money in this situation is the people taking the profit off the top that would otherwise be used to expand the game. Don’t think you’re helping the little guy by spending more money. That’s capitalism bull. The only people who profit here are the shareholders and execs.

Fixing this one means SSO needs to get off its high horse and apologize. There is no modern comparison where the outcome of this goes well, long term or short term, and the best thing SSO can do for its image is back down and apologize. SSO should reduce the price of the foxes, and make more colors before having this silver fox be an exclusive. Additionally, that bonus should be available in all Star Coin packages. In the future, SSO needs to avoid having high priced limited editions and exclusives, for pets, clothing, and horses, to prevent its players from developing unhealthy whale tendencies. I think SSO should additionally lower its already existing prices for Star Coins and Star Rider Membership to make the game more available to the general player base, but that’s a topic for another time.

If you want SSO to do this, definitely write in to them. You’re welcome to use any of the arguments I presented here, and if you need more, my ask box is open. But most importantly, vote with your wallet. If you are opposed to this kind of business model, do not give SSO your money, now or in the future. Encourage your friends to not give them money. Don’t just grumble about the cost and spend the money. If you are opposed to this move, don’t buy it. If enough people tell SSO with their wallets that this is not a viable option, that its player base will not support this kind of sales campaign, it will have to find another option if it wants to stay in business.

A Facebook Messenger bot is a chatbot that lives in Facebook Messenger, meaning it converses with some of the 1.3 billion people who use Facebook Messenger every month.

If you’re on Facebook, you probably already have a Facebook Messenger strategy. A Facebook Messenger bot is how you scale that strategy.

As of the 2018 F8 conference, Facebook has 300,000 active Messenger bots. That’s three times as many as the year prior.

Why use Facebook Messenger bots for business?

There are two major advantages to using a Facebook Messenger bot.

First, there’s a low barrier to entry for both you and your target audience. Facebook Messenger is the third most-used app in the world, used by 68 percent of app users.

And it’s not just for group chats among friends and family. A recent Nielsen survey found that people think messaging is the second-best way to talk to a business. People exchange 2 billion messages with businesses over Facebook Messenger every month.

Compare this to the rest of the mobile app market, where 71 percent of users delete an app within 90 days.

The second advantage is that the field is still wide open. While Facebook has 6 million advertisers, there are only 300,000 chatbots. That’s a lot less competition.

Meanwhile, marketing email click-through rates (3.1 percent, on average) haven’t improved in years, and only 30 percent of marketing emails are even opened. Chatbots can help you bypass inbox competition too.

Headliner Labs found that people are 3.5 times more likely to open a Facebook Message than a marketing email. And since customers can respond (usually by pressing a CTA button—they don’t even need to type), they’re likely to move further down your marketing funnel.

On top of that, Facebook Messenger has sponsored ads, which can be sent to anyone who has previously been in touch with your Page. Yes, this means that you already have a subscriber list. You can use these ads in tandem with your chatbot to target high-intent customers.

Customers expect 24/7 availability, but they hate waiting on hold. They also ask many of the same questions over and over (and over) again.

How are businesses using Facebook Messenger bots?

Marriott’s focus on stellar customer service means that they’ve been at the forefront of the chatbot boom. They created their first Facebook Messenger chatbot in 2016 to help guests link their Marriott and Starwood rewards accounts after the companies merged.

The bot was so popular that Marriott transitioned it into a booking bot: guests can enter their dates in a city, and receive hotel suggestions. This bot also highlights content from Marriott’s magazine, Traveller, integrating useful local information and news for the guest’s upcoming visit.

Separately, last year Marriott created a careers chatbot to target millennial job seekers. “MC” helps prospective candidates find the right job in the right city, and simultaneously provides education on Marriott values and history. This makes a lot of sense coming from a brand that aims to treat its employees as well as its customers.

Sephora

The cosmetics retailer’s Reservation Assistant bot is simple but brilliant.

Sephora offers free makeovers in their stores, and this bot eliminates five steps from the booking process. Implementing it led to an 11 percent higher booking rate. (And a lot more folks buying a purple eyeliner they didn’t know they needed til they saw it in the mirror—customers spent an average of $50 once in-store.)

Bud Light

During the 2017 NFL season, Bud Light promoted its team-branded cans by creating a chatbot that could order and deliver a case of beer in under an hour on game days.

The genius here is a blend of personalization (customers get to pick their favourite team), hyper-locality (geo-targeting allowed the bot to select the best delivery partner for the area), and timeliness (the bot reminded users each game day that it was time to stock the fridge.) This bot saw an 83 percent engagement rate.

Chatfuel

As the largest self-serve platform for building Facebook Messenger bots, Chatfuel has an impressive client list: everyone from TechCrunch to Netflix to the Cincinnati Bengals.

They have an intuitive visual interface for those without a coding background, but developers will like the editable front-end and customization options. While you can build a bot for free, a lot of the more complex (and interesting) tools are only available with Chatfuel Pro accounts.

Conversable

Conversable is the enterprise-class, SaaS platform that will build your bot with you. They work with a lot of Fortune 500 companies (they’re behind the Whole Foods, Pizza Hut, 7-11, and Dunkin Donuts bots, among others). They go beyond Facebook Messenger, and will make sure your conversations are happening across all channels, including voice-based ones (like, for instance, OnStar).

Facebook Messenger for Developers

If you’re up for coding your own Messenger bot, Facebook provides a multitude of resources. And they are always working with their developer community to come up with new ideas to improve the user experience. Sephora and Nike, for instance, are currently testing augmented reality camera effects for their customers.

Here are some hard-earned tips from the experts, aimed at those of you who are ready to build your own Facebook Messenger bot.

Set your expectations

No bot can do everything—yet. When you’re designing your first campaign, select one goal or use case for the bot to handle. Popular ideas include customer service, lead identification, product promotion, or discovery.

Keep it simple, and walk before you run.

Always have a human on-hand

A bot’s success depends on its ability to recognize when a human being is needed. Automated conversations are fabulously speedy and responsive, but they can’t replace human connection.

Customers should have the option, at any point in the conversation, to connect with a person.

Be transparent

While a bot’s ability to store and remember information is one of its most attractive features (everyone wants to feel like a regular!) be up front with users about data retention. What data will be stored? How will it be used? How can a person opt out?

Give your users power over their private information.

Keep learning

Once you’ve built it, integrate your bot into your marketing calendar and your overall Facebook strategy. Your Facebook Messenger bot isn’t replacing email, customer service agents, or apps yet, but it offers features of all three, which means it must be treated like the unique beast it is.

After much experimenting and researching (and spending) I wanted to share my go-to beauty products that are vegan and cruelty free (and most of them relatively inexpensive). Whether you are vegan or not PLEASE PLEASE do not buy products from brands that test on animals. Do a little research (this blog post will get you started!) because no animal’s suffering and torture is worth a lipstick. The more we show we care about this issue through what we buy, the more inclined companies will be to change.

First thing’s first: don’t throw away all your non-vegan make up. As with clothes, it’s more wasteful to just chuck it than to use it up and get your money’s worth. As you start to replace things, just put red crosses over all these brands and products that test on animals. E.g. L’Oreal. They sell to China, thus they test on animals so see ya.

Here’s the lowdown of the current rules:

The use of animals to test cosmetics products or their ingredients is banned in the UK and all other member states of the European Union.

(However, millions of animals a year are still tested on for medicinal purposes and in universities).

This law is all well and good, but products are still tested on animals in the US and China. In fact, in China, it is a legal requirement for the products to be tested on animals before they are sold. So companies that sell to China will test on animals. You are still being faced with a choice to buy ethically almost all the time but you probably didn’t even realise (these big companies are very sneaky).

Some brands that are too big, like Unilever who own basically everything, ADMIT to testing on animals. Other brands will be vague and not give clear answers, probably because they too test on animals but try to find a loophole. But their vagueness is just suspicious. If that’s all you can see them saying avoid these brands too.

There are some brands, such as Lush, that not only avoid ingredients tested on animals but actively seek to end it.

The controversy for me lies in they having products that still include beeswax, carmine, and casein (a protein from cows milk). I’m waiting for the day Lush goes all vegan. Because I would argue a brand is not 100% cruelty free (even though they don’t test on animals) if they still use stuff like beeswax which to obtain involves the exploitation of bees. See the full list of animal derived ingredients here if you want to familiarise yourself with what to look out for. Carmine for example, has multiple names such as crimson lake, natural red 4 and E120 so is something I’ve found quite difficult to spot.

It’s okay to make mistakes.  As you’re probably a bit confused right now anyway- there’s so many aspects to think about, so many products and brands to avoid that it almost seems not worth bothering. But I promise it is! It seems overwhelming at first but what a thing to boast to yourself: I do not partake in supplying funds for companies to test on guinea-pigs.

What is more, there are still loads of options! Just because you can’t buy that Estee Lauder foundation anymore, doesn’t mean there’s not a great cruelty free and vegan alternative. Same goes for toiletries and hair products (I’ll do a separate posts on shampoos and conditioners etc- this is long already and we haven’t even got to the make up yet haha). I still buy products from brands that are not completely vegan but still cruelty free (obvs) just because it’s cheap/ it suits my skin type/ variation etc. I’m currently in the process of finding my favourite vegan make up from vegan brands that I’ll probably use again and again during the rest of my life. More and more brands are jumping on the vegan bandwagon though so keep a lookout.

Cruelty Free Kitty is a great resource.

Just google a specific product and that usually gives you a straight forward answer.

Also PETA has several useful lists which are easy to navigate.

Bookmark these resources. Look for the leaping bunny which means it’s cruelty free on the back of products. Check if the brand itself tests on animals at all or sells to China. See if there’s a vegan alternative if it isn’t labelled as suitable for vegans.

Here’s a real life scenario for you. I’ve recently been wanting a new eye shadow palette for my birthday but when I was researching (to help my family so they don’t have to), all these brands that boast about their vegan range fell short at EYE SHADOW. Weirdly, even other blogs that listed for example the ABH palettes as vegan were not correct because when I looked at the ingredients it said it contained Carmine??? I love red eye shadow, it’s so autumnal and warm, but they all seem to have boiled down crushed beetles in??? UM WHO SANCTIONS THIS?? If companies stated more clearly **contains dead bugs btw** I don’t think people would be as convinced by their sales pitches, but look at that pigmentation! I’m not, for sure.

This research took a bit of work. And I’m happy to do so for my own benefit as well as sharing my findings to make it easier for readers of this blog! But it shouldn’t have been as complicated as it was. I’ve been looking for vegan products for almost two years now and the information is still not clear. It is a current and controversial issue but one we as the consumers can definitely put pressure on.

On a more positive note, a good place to start is Superdrug. Superdrug is the superior place to visit on the high-street for beauty products – and great for on a budget! I always end up scrolling on Beauty Bay and Feel Unique but never committing to the extortionate priced items in my basket. Maybe the quality is slightly better than drugstore brands, but not £15-difference-in-price better. Instead I spend lots at Superdrug (but gotta get them deals!).

Boycott Boots, here is why Superdrug is super super:

It has a selection of great drugstore brands; you can notice a difference between a Huda pallet and a Makeup Revolution but I still get compliments on my pink eye shadow from Makeup Revolution (unfortunately turns out this palette has carmine in sigh, I tried and some of their other palettes are vegan).

THEY HAVE A COMPLETELY VEGAN AND CRUELTY FREE MAKE UP RANGE and the products are actually very reliable and good value for money. No messing about here, thank you Superdrug you’re my hero x

Everything else i.e. not make up in their own brand range is cruelty free and almost all is vegan (I’ve found some foot cream with honey in it) and the great thing is that everything is labelled clearly (!!!)

STUDENT DISCOUNT- Unidays and NUS, get on it.

A BEAUTY CARD- gotta get them points because then you get free stuff.

Thursdays you get all these extra treats if you shop in store (see ya there).

And there’s always some deal or another like 3 for 2 or get this thing free and I’m like yes this gives me an excuse to stock up on everything because I’m saving money in the long run.

e.l.f.- another completely vegan and cruelty free brand exclusively sold in Superdrug stores. It is so liberating being able to buy everything and not have to check. And I really rate most Elf products.

Let’s start with the basics. I rate the elf primers. Affordable and do the job well. There are plenty of variations to suit different skin types and for different occasions. The Mineral Face Primer is my favourite at the moment.

Foundation

Gosh Foundation Drops 30ml Ivory 002

Okay I’m still struggling to find THE love of my life (foundation-wise and real life lol) but this one comes pretty close. I love GOSH products, the quality is just above a lot of the other drugstore brands but not all of them are vegan 😦

This foundation buffs very nicely and is just the right amount of coverage! It is fairly long-wearing too when combined with a primer and setting spray/powder

Concealer

B. Flawless Concealer Duo N1/C2

This one is okay- it’s got a creamy texture an the ability to blend two shades and is fine if you put foundation over the top. But I have terrible dark circles under my eyes an I just need something a bit stronger.

So am still looking for a banging vegan concealer, hit me up if you got any suggestions.

Powder

GOSH Velvet Touch Primer & Setting Powder – Transparent

This is a versatile product- can be used as base and/or setting powder. It gives a nice finish though and keeps everything in place. The flaw with loose powder is that they are not the easiest to use.

Highlighter

e.l.f. Baked Highlighter Moonlight Pearls 704

Lovely lil highlighter! I feel like it’s quite subtle so I go a bit crazy on the layers but for a fiver, it adds great dimension and lasts forever.

Bronzer

I Heart Revolution Bronzer Love Hot Summer 5g

I loveee this bronzer! I use to adore the Hula bronzer from Benefit but alas, Benefit needs to go in the burn pile. I have gone through some bad bronzers since, but this is just perfect for my fair complexion!

Lips

(I do not suit lipstick so barely wear anything other than my Lush lip balm sorry this has one product, will let you know if I find any more gems)

e.l.f. Matte Lip Colour Tea Rose

This is like a pencil lipstick, it’s a sort of hybrid but I actually am quite a fan! Nice to add a bit of subtle colour and complete a look without being too in your face, or drying.

Eyes

Mascara

Too Faced BETTER THAN SEX MASCARA

The pink one, and top right shows the brush. Yes I should probably make a joke how this mascara is better than sex (but let’s be honest, it’s not) but it is my favourite mascara for sure! So dramatic, coal black, and actually makes my eyes look bigger! It does flake a bit towards the end of the day, but the mascara itself lasts so long! I buy roughly one a year.

The gold mascara is Gaya Cosmetics Vegan Mascara for Sensitive Eyes.

It was a present and I actually really like it! It’s the opposite to my Better Than Sex mascara, it lengthens lashes and is a bit less dramatic for everyday. It also doesn’t flake as much. The brush is in the top left photo. The two mascaras combined, create the ultimate dramatic eyelashes.

Palettes

Okay story time: so I was going to include my Urban Decay Naked 2 Pallet here. It’s a go-to for nights out and the best pigmentation palette I have. I got it for my birthday last year and I specifically remember asking for a vegan eye shadow palette. And I specifically remember my Mum saying she double checked with the lady who sold it to her in Debenhams or whatever that it was definitely vegan. And up to five minutes ago I thought it was! I had done light research a year a go, couldn’t find anything to convince me otherwise, it was cruelty free after all.  BUT IT’S NOT VEGAN! Urban Decay is a cruelty free brand but is owned by L’Oreal so its parent company isn’t even cruelty free so belittles its cruelty free status. On the UD website, it says all eye shadow in the palette MAY CONTAIN CARMINE. And now, I just feel like my life’s a lie, how does a brand get this far and so popular that almost every girl has one but people aren’t deterred by not only the dead beetles, but the brand’s laid-back attitude to using animal derived ingredients?

Also whilst partaking in this vigorous research for this post, I have reason to believe my other fave palette, Makeup Revolution Flawless 4, isn’t vegan. I bought this palette fairly recently and although the pigmentation isn’t great unless you add water or hairspray to your brush (though hairspray can dry the eye shadow out), I do remember looking up whether it is vegan. Superdrug again is extremely helpful because it has a vegan filter (as do an increasing amount of websites thank you). But I thought I would mention this here to admit I make mistakes. And sometimes my good intentions don’t get come to fruition.

Instead I shall include my Lily Lolo Laid Bare Eye PAlette. 

These are lovely quality creamy eye shadows for a shimmery every day. The downside is the individual eye shadows are kinda small (but portable!)

e.l.f. Matte Eyeshadow Palette Mad For Matte

Elf classic mattes good for a basic look and the base of a more complex one if you combine with another palette. A must-have!

Eyeliner

Supercat

The one time you’re allowed to go to Boots is for Soap and Glory. Yes, their products are pretty fab, and they are cruelty free. This eyeliner, the ultimate of all eyeliner pens. is also vegan (THANK GOODNESS). 10/10 feel like a super cat.

Lashes

Extreme caution here!!! Some of the most popular lashes are made from mink who are kept on fur farms. Elf do cruelty free lashes (but I’ve found them not to be so good).

I tend not to buy lashes because they are SO expensive and would rather invest in a good mascara.

Just be careful. Check.

Brows

No competition, brows is where I justly splash out a little and get the Dipbrow Pomade by Anastasia Beverly Hills. It is God-like and worth the hype. The only bad thing is that it dries out quite easily. Sometimes I have to add a little water or setting spray to my brush to get it going.

Setting Sprays

Can you tell I’m a fan of elf?

I’m not sure how well setting sprays actually work but I wanted to try one. I think I can notice a difference but I prefer a good powder to set my make up. Sometimes I double up. Also word to the wise, apply after eye makeup has completely dried.

Perfume

Eden Perfumes

I’ll do a proper post about this fab company but just buy from Eden Perfumes. Perfume can contain some nasty ingredients- Eden Perfumes are all vegan and not tested on animals. They make dupes of popular brands (who can afford the eye-watering £50 perfume of Marc Jacobs bottles anyway?) that smell almost exactly the same! I love No. 309 Daisy and No.470, a Tom Ford dupe. They have two stores, one in Brighton and one in London so worth a visit where you can try everything!

Even better, you can send your bottles back to get them refilled at a cheaper price whilst also saving on waste yay!

Brushes

Like most people, I have just collected a random assortment of brushes over the years. When buying brushes make sure the hairs are synthetic. I really like Eco Tools though.

Also Superdrug has an own brand brush cleaner for those who need a good, cheap brush cleaner!

The case is complicated and it is about my car insurance. I misinformed my insurance company about my NCD. As a result they cancelled my policy. The problem is that before they cancelled it I had a claim. My car was not damage at all but the other guy had a few scratches on the bumper and he reported the incident. My insurance company informed me; they would cancel the policy and return all the payments I made so far. They would cover the cost of the damage to another guy, but I have to repay all the cost they bear.
