maybe Unpopular Opinion but like. My age group really needs to stop complaining about modern ~reimiginationings~ of our childhood favorite movies and tv shows allegedly “ruining our childhoods.”
like??? The new lion king movie did not get rid of the old one. It’s still there. You can still go watch it. And you don’t have to watch, or enjoy the new one. and absolutely nothing about the original or your memories of the original has been changed.
Shows and movies have been being remade ever since film/tv has existed long enough to have stuff to remake in the first place. and idk, i could be wrong, but I reckon there were even remakes/TV adaptations of radio shows back when radio shows were a thing. We have decades, and decades, and DECADES upon decades worth of remakes, book-to-movie adaptations and the like, and just
literally, nothing is sacred. And that’s not a bad thing. There’s no reason not to retell classic stories for modern audiences. And honestly? Complaining about kids shows/movies being remade for modern kids is ESPECIALLY absurd to me, considering that we’re not even the target audience anymore. Why should any of us REALLY feel so strongly about media that isn’t even meant for us in the first place??
The shit we grew up with isn’t inherently superior. It’s just different. It holds a special place in our hearts for a reason. And if today’s kids saw our faves, they’d probably love it, too, but there’s also a lot of nuance that they’d miss out on - little tiny details of the era that they would have had to have been there to appreciate.
Enter, the remakes. The same stories, retold to reflect the current world that kids are growing up in. See: Ed in The Lion King was originally a blatantly offensive caricature of a disabled person. Ed in the remake is a charmingly wacky boy who (though still Evil) just has a hard time understanding social cues. The (in)famous “dress in drag and do the hula” scene, which was a very Not Nice mockery of Hawaiian culture, was changed into something that accomplished the same purpose in the storyline, while still being funny, and WITHOUT being racist.
Those things alone are EXCELLENT reasons for why remakes can even sometimes be good things.
So like.
Please calm down. It is okay. Your childhood is not ruined. It’s still right there in the past where it’s always been. Please allow kids to enjoy our favorite stories in formats that resonate more with the time that they are growing up in.
And????
Most folks that I seem to hear complaining about “ugh! not another remake!” are the SAAAAAAME ONES who turn around and complain that “ugh, original movies/series these days will NEVER be as good as the ones I grew up with!”
!!! Either you want the same shit as before, or you don’t!
New stories, no matter how “good” they are, are NEVER going to be able to hold the same place in your heart as the ones you loved during your formative years. You will never love anything like you loved The Lion King or The Little Mermaid or Between The Lions or Dora the Explora. It’s just not going to happen! So stop hoping for it!
