Online reputation management person here. I hate to speak poorly of others, but the reputation industry...needs a new reputation, if possible, because they are ineffective, buy backlinks, or don't do much. Also, it is not really very similar to PR.
In my opinion, there are three areas:
Reputation Repair: Remove and suppress. Deleting a negative link is almost impossible--except for copyright violation involving images/videos, or some terms of service violations. When this is not possible, the next best solution is pushing down the negative links through excellent content creation.
Reputation Building: Creating an online presence when there is none. It starts with making LinkedIn, Reddit, Quora, etc. platform profiles and being constantly active and engaging.
Reputation Boosting: There might be an existing web presence but it needs to target specific clients such as finance, law, art collectors, etc.
