he speaks the words plainly. less a confession and more a reassurance, a way for him to say, here i am, and i love you.

rowan opens her mouth. the words burn to cinder on her tongue.

stephen locks their fingers. “rowan.”

“i do,” she whispers, a little helplessly, brows pulling together.

“you don’t have to say it back.”

“it’s scary, is all,” she murmurs. “saying it out loud. like—there might be something waiting for me to say it, and then take you away from me.” she pauses, feels her expression crumple a little. “again.”
