Patches of grass and gravel crunched underneath Toni’s boots as she looked for a spot to set up her blankets and snacks. Most of the good spots had been taken by others who had arrived earlier than she had, so now she was completely determined to find a spot that was good enough.

She had brought ‘pigs in a blanket,’ as explained to her by Liv. Cocktail weenies wrapped in crescent dough — It was an easy recipe she had learned when she first started being invited to shows and their subsequent after parties. It made a good first impression. They were cheap and easy to make, and everyone seemed to enjoy them, so somewhere down the line they became a staple for Toni to bring to events.

The weather was cold for it being May in Florida. Sixty degrees is not ideal, but it’s times like these that Toni is grateful for being partnered with a clothing brand. She was dressed very comfortably, an animal print hoodie hung loosely from her frame, SPLX branded sweatpants to top off the cozy outfit. Her hair was still curled from Dynamite the night before - albeit pulled up haphazardly so she could put her blankets down - and her face was stripped of the dramatic red lip she had become known for.

A ‘Trader Joe’s’ branded tote bag was dropped onto the ground in front of her. She pulled out a large blanket to lay on the dirt, another to wrap around her shoulders. While making her way outside, Toni managed to throw a couple of snacks and drinks into her bag. Thus, with a ‘thump’ of her landing butt-first onto the blanket, she had firmly planted herself in a spot where she would stay for the rest of the night.

The clock struck half-past ten when she decided to call it a night. It's about the third month of Sphere’s adorable-to-death experiment that caused more misfortune to her than benefits. In the back of her mind, Chaeyeon knows that it would all be worth it in the end. She has to keep reminding herself that in the midst of the strenuous training, being bullied in by other Sphere girls and the never-ending heartache from her failed first love. In reality, Chaeyeon is barely floating along the days, there were times when she thought she was getting better but then some girls would think it’s funny to lock her up training rooms or the sudden appearance of her ex in ballet class. 

Whatever the case was, she thought it was safer to go home late that evening to avoid all the drama and have a bit of peace of mind. Which she found for the first half of her walk, Chaeyeon even went so far and thought it would be nice to bring home some pastries for her and Yoohyeon to have for breakfast the next day. 

Making her way towards the small cafe, Chaeyeon’s excited thoughts dropped abruptly when she saw them. There on the other side of the glass window, she watched Taeyang pay for the bill on a date he was on with one of the prettiest girls she’s ever seen. So this is how it feels like to have one’s heart be ripped out of her body, left bleeding on the ground where she stood. By the time they made eye contact, her usually clear gaze is blurred by the stream of tears that broke from their dam and resistance. A sob wrenches away from her as her feet decided to start working again, except she doesn’t know if she’s walking away from the scene or ready to confront her ruin.

She stood at the far corner of the room. Away from the door, not too far back nor ahead by the instructor, but all the way to the side to avoid obstructing other students who entered the class. Unlike most of those attending class who were fans of the idol, Chaeyeon is a trainee and had seen the famous Reno walkabout Samsung building for practices and whatnot. Staying by the edge allows her to take comfort and solitude in the genre she was born into, away from excited fans and peering eyes of her fellow trainees. 

But she felt him the moment he entered the room. She stood there frozen, unable to look at his direction, unable to look anywhere else but her own reflection in the mirrored wall in front of her. Chaeyeon knows she looks like a ghost of her former self, a little too pale with bags under her eyes, cheeks sunken from unhealthy eating habits. Would he even notice? Would he even care?

Chewing on her lower lip, she bites back the urge to scream. Fighting off the tears that’s threatening to escape her, the last thing she refuses to do is have a break down in front of strangers. Especially in front of Yoo Taeyang.

The building itself had a familiar vibe as KT, it was as though she could feel the raw talent vibrate through its walls. To a humble trainee such as herself and be considered in a debuting idol group by another company, it was safe to say that Chaeyeon felt utterly overwhelmed with all this. Entering Sphere solidified the buzz that’s humming through her veins. 

Biting down her lower lip, a nervous habit she could never get rid of, she looks around the busy pristine entranceway. Pictures Sphere’s hallways had posters after posters of their chart-topping idols amongst other talents. Trying to get too distracted, Chaeyeon approached the a kind, pretty looking girl for help. “Uhm, excuse me,” tapping on her shoulder, Chaeyeon smiles at her politely, “I was wondering you could help me find, uh this practice room?” Pointing at her phone where the email was held to where she needed to go and report to.

It is clear as any summer day that she has been acting differently. In the midst of the whirlwind that is the first month of Sphere’s experiment debut group, there is wonder if anyone would notice at all. Chaeyeon does not think she stands out particularly than any of the girls she’s now training with, but she has made some friends amongst them. Even if one doesn’t know her for a long time the sudden difference in her attitude from when they began to now is startlingly different. 

She silent stands beside Sua, sighing right after their coaches dismissed them for the group practice. Unaware of her own actions, she turns towards the older girl and instead of giving Sua her usual smile, Chaeyeon sighs again. “Solo practice?” Asking in her uniquely small voice, barely a whisper but loud enough to be heard by those beside her.

This is getting out of hand. Even though Chaeyeon and everyone in this project know that the theme is ‘pure girl’, they could only be asked to do this for so many times. To some this hasn’t been all that repetitive. Especially those who are already in Sphere. But to Chaeyeon, who had to audition for a spot to get into this experiment, this is literally the third time she’s exploring this concept. 

Looking heavenwards for a brief second, she glances around to see the other girls reactions. Quickly spotting Chungha, she quietly edges towards the older girl. “Please tell me, I’m not the only one getting tired of this,” Chaeyeon mumbles as they slowly make their way out of the practice room, “you’re not doing a cute solo right?” She asked almost pleadingly, latching onto Chungha as though she has the answers to everything. For the brief moment, she knew the Sphere trainee, Chaeyeon felt like Chungha has an abundance of knowledge she could definitely learn from.

She needed to be in a familiar environment. Desperation to grasp something from what seemed to be a lifetime ago, she walks through the halls of the Samsung building looking for one of her KT family. A glimpse of home comes in the form of Johnny, the older brother figure who performed silly dances and cheered her on countless of times. 

“Oppa!” Her voice cracks from the sudden screech, “goodness it’s been ages since I’ve seen you. I almost forgot your face.” Chaeyeon knows her teasing comes off in a wrong tone, mostly because there was a hint of sadness in it. She was surprised she didn’t break down in front of him. “Where are you heading too? Maybe we can walk there together.”

As soon as he heard that oh so familiar voice, the Chicago native couldn't help but let out a loud sigh, purposely loud so she could hear him. "I'm sorry Henrietta, we'll continue our conversation later. She's here." He jokingly told one of the chickens. And with that said, Phil put on his most annoyed look on his face, making sure that the blonde saw it. "I don't know, maybe you put one of those trackers on my body so that you know where I am at every moment? I wouldn't be surprised." His tone was serious, but he was being sarcastic of course. "And it's not basic middle aged, it's comfy and beautiful, you're just mad I didn't wear the other one. Besides, Chuckie Finster? Laaaaaame. You look more like Angelica Pickles." He didn't really mean that Chuckie was lame, but he couldn't let her do all the teasing. "You're here because you already scared off the rest of the guests? Wow, took you longer than I expected!"

Hosting was a breeze for someone like Gionna, when needed she was charismatic and could talk to everyone - fake it till you make it is her specialty. However, there was always a need for a breather, especially after the long day of planning and setting up she had. What better breather than her animals? Everyone had a good fix of them already so the area was pretty clear, plus it was around their feeding time, so they wouldn’t be paying attention to any of the guests anyways. Yet, when she made her way to her chicken coop, she wasn’t totally shocked to see the familiar back of her latest victim come into view. With a grin, she moved her way besides him, “how did I know I’d find you here in all your basic middle aged man pajama glory?” Gionna teased.

The hair that was once caught in a tight ponytail curled loosely framing her face. She could feel her sweat in almost every part of her body as she learns the month’s evaluations repeatedly. Chaeyeon huffs as she tries to catch her breath, leaning forward with hands on her knees as she glances to her tutor for the day. 

“I find this transition a bit tricky,” for a dance it’s the worst feeling when she can’t seem to have her body follow through a certain choreography. It becomes a challenge, a frustrating one yet oh so very satisfying in the end. “Thank again for helping me out with this unnie.” Smiling gratefully at Taeyeon, who is kind enough to guide her through the whole routine.
