Napoleon was telling the exiles what a crook Bourrienne was, along with Talleyrand....

Dans ce temps, Talleyrand était avec Bourrienne de moitié, mais il trouvait que Bourrienne allait bien vite et lui disait qu’il se perdrait :

— Oh non ! disait Bourrienne, c’est impossible. J’ai cou­ché dans la tente de l’Empereur en Egypte.

Talleyrand me demanda ensuite ce que cela voulait dire ! Je répondis que j’avais une tente composée de plusieurs pièces, que les officiers d’état-major couchaient dans une par­tie. Pour peu que Bourrienne eût été joli garçon, Talleyrand en eût conclu qu’il y avait eu des liaisons plus intimes.

Bourrienne, un jour, fondant presque en larmes, me demanda de lui prêter un million.

— Et pourquoi? dis-je.

— Je veux tout vous dire.

Et il me conta l’embarras où étaient ses affaires.

— Comment! Vous étiez de moitié avec ces fripons qui me volent et vous étiez mon secrétaire! Sortez d’ici.

Je ne l’ai plus revu. Je fis bien, mais j’eusse dû lui dresser le derrière et l’emprisonner. J’avais des moyens de l’attaquer. Il me connaissait bien. Il ne fallait pas faire de moi un ennemi. Il croyait que je ne pourrais pas me passer de lui, que nul autre ne pouvait écrire sous ma dictée. Il se trompait. Je demandai au prince Joseph s’il pouvait me don­ner quelqu’un. Il m’envoya Méneval qui, au bout de huit jours, le remplaça parfaitement.

At the time, Talleyrand was in with Bourrienne for half, but he thought Bourrienne was going very fast and told him that he would be lost:

— Oh no ! said Bourrienne, it's impossible. I slept in the Emperor's tent in Egypt.

Talleyrand then asked me what that meant ! I replied that I had a tent made up of several rooms, that the staff officers slept in one part. If Bourrienne had been a homosexual, Talleyrand would have concluded that there had been more intimate relationships.

Bourrienne, one day, almost bursting into tears, asked me to lend him a million.

— Why?? I said.

— I want to tell you everything.

And he told me of his business debts.

— What ! You were in for half with these rascals who steal from me and you were my secretary ! Get out of here.

I never saw him again. I did well, but I should have kicked his ass and imprisoned him. I had ways to attack him. He knew me well. You shouldn't make me an enemy. He believed that I could not do without him, that no one else could write under my dictation. He was wrong. I asked Prince Joseph if he could give me someone. He sent me Méneval who, after eight days, replaced him perfectly.
