finished watching Akito the Exiled and Boy Oh Boy do I have Thoughts

Overall I'd say that while it wasn't great, it wasn't bad by any measure either. The characters were likable, it provided some interesting world building and the mecha fights were fun and dynamic. My biggest complaint is all the Geass fuckery that makes no sense (but I'll get to that in a bit) and some of the so-called "genius" plans were really fucking stupid.

(Rest under the read-more cuz it got really long)

Cons:

- Julius’ plan is dumb and could have been easily disproven with live footage of the places he supposedly bombed > tho I guess that could lead people to assume the footage is fake.

- I don’t get why Julius’ plan would lead to riots in Europe?? Like I get that the French look for any excuse to protest (that’s our cultural ThingTM) and that there’s supposedly a lot of frustration with the Government but idk the setup was flimsy imo

- Silas’ plan was even fucking dumber > his plan was to prop Leila as a martyr figure and then use her "death" to claim control?? Leila could have easily proven that she was still alive and that Silas was full of shit. I get that Silas is supposed to parallel Napoleon and while that’s an interesting idea in theory the execution falls flat given how fucking stupid Silas is.

- Shin is meh, there was definitely potential but he really did not engage me At All. His geass also makes no fucking sense to me tho that might be cuz it’s “corrupted”??

- Tbh all of the geass related stuff was kinda wack, I dont understand how Leila can have a “fragment of geass”?? It seems so contrived, the writers could have given her a normal contract and then have CC fuck off when she realized that Leila wouldn’t fulfill her death wish (she did it with Mao she could have easily done it with Leila) and then write an excuse abt why she forgot she had one.

The personified collective unconscious?? Silas having a “contract” with the Collective Unconscious?? The space-time rupture in episode 5?? Ashley somehow teleporting in a blue portal?? WHO TELEPORTED ASHLEY??? SUNRISE I NEED ANSWERS

- And what happened to the rest of the castle squad at the end?? We know the main crew + Ashley went to live with the Romani but what abt Anna and co? Like I’m supposed to believe that Anna, the character who talks abt Leila 24/7, wouldn’t have anything to say abt Leila leaving???

- Speaking of Anna, idgaf what the wiki/the staff says she was gay af for Leila, like how am I supposed to believe that Anna had a crush on Yukiya when 90% of her dialogue is her mooning over Leila.

Pros:

- The mecha fights were fucking fantastic, and I really like that the final fight between Akito and Shin just dissolved into sword fighting. I also liked the concept of Shin and Leila's geasses overlapping (?) and causing the ghost intervention and the memory flashes. It was cliche and corny but I'm a sucker for that trope so I'm not complaining.

- The Ryo/Yukiya/Ayano trio was fucking great and I love how they adopted Akito into their family against his will gjvhv

Ryo/Yukiya/Ayano @ Akito:

I especially loved the moment when Akito was abt to kill Ashley à la kawoshin but they stopped him with the power of Found FamilyTM ;w;

- Ashley was great and I wish we’d seen more of him (I may or may not ship Akito and Ashley sue me :P)

- The moment between Ayano and Jeanne was unexpected but I really liked it. If only more characters in Code Geass took the time to talk to one another so many problems could have been avoided *looks at Lelouch and Suzaku*

- Speaking of Lelouch and Suzaku! It was a nice cameo, they didn't have a big role and I didn't expect them to tho I do think it's a shame that we never saw Akito and Suzaku interact given all the similarities between the two (plus my dumbass shounen brain wants to see who would win in a fight). Leila and Julius would have been another interesting duo to see clash.

It was heartbreaking to see Suzaku finally willing to work w/ Lelouch again to save Nunally only for Rolo to show up to get Lelouch brainwashed (again) 😔 I wish there were more fics that explored how things would have unfolded had Suzaku and Lelouch teamed up post-akito/pre-R2 (btw if you know any fics that explore this idea PLS link them to me 🙏)

i know some people hate the cgi mechas in akito but damn the action scenes look amazing and the battles look so much more fluid than in code geass

and i love how the EU mechas can shift between "spider" mode and "normal" mode

i started watching akito the exiled and Omg the ridiculous french accent caught me off guard

idk whether to find it funny or be offended
