♚ - a memory of something paranormal

(boi, this one was longer than I had planned.)

What do you call paranormal for a mage?

I mean, they can wield literally something humans have called for many centuries not “normal“ by their standarts. Powers that can shape anything you’d wish, if you happen to be lucky enough to wield it with expertise. an ice sculpture could be simply cast with a spell, or an ice block shaped through magic. Fire could be touched by those with affinity to it’s element with little more than the feeling of its warmth. Time could be slowed, hasted, stoppedrewinded by your very will.

So what do you call paranormal?

And adult and six particularly problematic teenagers could say what they did, was exactly that...

It had started our like a simple mess with their powers, a test initially to prove to the eldest one of the group how well their lessons at the academy had been. A bunch of enchantments, some spells, a few castings, chants, you’d name it. They would do them with relative ease, sometimes without even breaking on sweats, much to the general’s swelling pride. The prince held flames of a luminosity barely perceptible to the eye, then turn them in linding suns with little more than a rubbing of his eyes in protest to the offending light; Gilrin would summon her illusions and allow them to interact with the world, with fur, teeth,feathers and scales so realistic the only thing that told you they were not real was their ghostly glowing forms.

Thanneth would enjoy her time to show spells of caligraphy and precission that, while not matching their companion Rhowën, came with a sharpness and style reminiscent of the old days. Thannor would rise walls from the ground entirely made of magic and as hard as heat-treated steel, shattering them with nothing but his fists in conjured gauntlets he summoned at the same. Then came Rhowën, with his long distance shots and agility, jumpting, climbing, leaping from all angles as he reached heights no man could in the same time, all while doing so with the grace of the northern felines that inhabited both the forest and the mountaints.

Then there was the general, imnpossing himself with a controled force that shook the ground beneath as he proved his worth in power and skill. Boulders sliced with gusto as his ax’ blade was pressed violently in the rocks until they were but blocks. and then he would fight with illusions of both men and beasts with what could be only called experience. Then in line came to challenge their most... active companion. In line with the yellow eyed mage, the red souled mage danced the general’s attacks away, forcing him to the deffensive as his form snapped from one side and position, to another in the blink of an eye. with a sword held in his hand and two glowing spears hovering behind him. sparrings that would sprout out of nowhere as they all unwinded their minds unto peace.

It was when they decided to try and cast spells together that things had gotten out of hand.

First it was two, trying to cast one simple weapon, with far better results than the ones formed individually, then came boosted spells, and so on as more joined on their experimentation. They had done this before, with permission and supervising of other mages as they did, who studied the compability their magics held with each other. Tonight was not going to be different,, and it wasn’t. If only for one little thing, that was simply put as comfort.

It had begun with Rhowën’s question, why not make more complex spells, since it was clear they had no issue to work together in this instance, nor any souring matter among themselves that would do through with their balance. Then came the agreeing voice of Thanneth as she spoke of tiring from simple spells when they knew they could do more, aided by Gilrin’s expertise on spells, and the woman could not deny her pride. And so one by one came their confident remarks to go against the elders words, who they deemed but men that did not allow others to thrive if such threatened their own fames.

And at last, Braigon and the prince fell to their own egos. And so they decided, speaking of what nature would their spell have, what would it be.

A pair had deemed to try and cast a proper long-travel teleportation spell, to spite the high mages and elders in their possibly incoming reproach, that the moment they feel them trying to cast anything out of their own designed limits. Another spoke of summoning a golem of great size and proportions in the form of a dragon, with the most realistic appearance they could, and perhaps ride it. However that was shut down, much to Rhowën’s dismay. And then came the option at last to cast the structure for a massive barrier.

That was highly questioned, but agreed upon all, curious as to what size they could manage together.

As they began to implement their casting circles and runes, the ghostly shade of something arose on the night before them, close to clouds from a passing front of rain. at first it looked lik a orb of moderated size from the distance, but it grew in size as it pulsed to the rhythm of their synchronized heartbeats. Fluctuating between white and black with a hum that filled their minds and perceptions as they did so. So far it was becoming a bit heavy on their souls the weight of the spell, but they knew hey could manage, and they would. For their own prides would not wish for a failure at this moment, not when they just had stroked them with previos achievements, not when they wanted to prove themselves to be worthy of the fate they believe they shall meet?

But what fate?

Curiosity waves it’s tendrils through their united magic, and before they know it. Their focus wanes like the moon’s phases, and so does their spell.

What fate does await them? Some wonder as others pick the anomaly on their casting. But before they are to correct the mistakes. It happens.

Fate...

Fate is curious on how it does what it does.

Forest, sky and earth swirl before them, taking away their ground as they fall on what can only be called as a mess of colors too bright for their eyes to see, and too violent for their heads to bear without motion sickness. Far too too much for them as the plunge unto something dark, darker, yet darker.

Blackness surrounds them, and they float adrift on he inverted canvans before them with tensed posture. Then turn and scream at each other over their failures at the spell attempt, were it not for their unfocused mind they would have not be caught in this situation. They would not be somewhere that they could not recognise, floating on whatever it was that allowed them to do so, possibly dead, or very near so. A response follows in kind over their own frustration blinding them from failing to find something to keep their egos further fed. Soon enough both sides are screaming at the other for apparently no other reason than cheer frustration at their current position, like wolves caged on the same small enclosure. Screams turned to insults, and so to threats, and once they were about to act on them, falling again they were unto the darker abyss they were on.

Darkness shifted to blinding light, shutting their eyes as the searing white burned their eyes. And from it came colors, and smells, their falling sky. And their bodies, meeting the cold and harsh ground with little mercy.

Heads lift without hesitation, scanning their surroundings and the others. The place is dark, with little light to ease their partially blinded eyes from the change of scenery, worry comes from those whose eyes little did see more than the burnt impression of that overwhelming whiteness that had sent them back. And they try to call, the answers are bitter remarks of the stupidity they had done, but otherwise they do not seem to be hostile anymore, not that they were finally free of whatever had been that place. Little time does it take for the yellow mage to enchant the eyesight of his companions, to avoid repeating the event that had just developed, and blind the other mages for yet another time. Revealing that they are, in fact, back home. But at the same it was not, for the forest they saw was not the once they had been previously to their accident, nay, it was farther to the northeast, if these brighter birches were anything to go by, or the softer soil benath them. Clearly not a sinlge sign of man’s touch had gone in the moss covered branches and ground. There was, however, a sign of grass near, a clearing they could imagine. Possibly an unkept path to guide them back to civilization? Hopefully so. Otherwise they would need to seek, or build, their own shelter. Not that they minded, but it was rather hetic to do so in the middle of the night.

They move onwards to the direction of the grass, searching where it grew taller and thicker from the sunlight, it wasn’t too hard to do so. Though the branches were something annoying to crouch for, and sometimes try to pass over. One thing they found odd was how easily they avoided the scratches from them, sometimes it almost felt like they phased right through some, almost as if they weren’t there. But they paid little mind to that as the light seemed to slip more and more between the leaves over them, treets became shorter, then burshes became more prominent on their paths, slowing their hasted footsteps. Their heads were becoming impatient so, the clearing was close and the waves of grass were lying just ahead, why was this land so adamant on their delay.

Other footsteps, that was why.

As the mages came to the borders, so did the distinct sound of boots, and of armor plates rubbing against each other. The mages do not advance further, but do not attempt to hide, instead they place a small spell to evade their sight, and stand, observing the newcomers.

They bear cloacks as they walk on the clearing, little is muttered by them as each of them hold torches. Silence fills the ambient, as if death had taken hold of the forest, even the winds strong gusts had lowered to soft breezes, barely rising murmurs from the tree tops. Afraid of whatever punishment may befall them should their leaves rise in volme, of whaever lay within those cloaks sublty lit by the moonlight. And as their paces halt, so does the wind, the quiet finally catching to the last of resisting noises. And their hoods shift, to the seven mages, eerie glows beneath that were to be eyes, staring deeply at their visages. And they narrow, faint murmurs, whispers barely audible are heard, but little do they last. One by one, six heads turn, resuming their paces as the last one keeps its head towards one of the youngest members, bringing a chill in the red eyed mage, something within those intense eyes felt so wrong...

The cloaked person finally joins the others, but shortly as they do, once more they stop. the one leading their file seems to scan the surface, they guess from the faint shifts its hood makes, the others wait in iddle positons as the man throws the torch away. His voice rings throug the silence with a flat tone, ordering the others to take in positions. The mages tense as they ready their spells, weapons soon glow as their muscles contract ever so lightly in preparation to leap in evasion. But never once did the cloaked figures turn aggresively to them as they do so, at the most one or two seem to remark something about feeling eyes. That stranges them. They keep acting like no one other than them were there, but that was preposterous! Their voices did not sound human, they were warped, magic twisted their voices in ways that pointed at them having magic in their souls. And what kind of person would be preparing for something in the middle of a clearing? They could be easily ambushed in that zone.

What was going on here?

They turn to each other, all bearing the same puzzled expressions on their faces as their magics are dispelled except their illusion. It takes little for one of them to make noise, despite their low hissings to remain quiet, it is Rhowën who speaks. Hinting at them all looking down to their waists, that something was really going on here. And with a skeptical glance, they turn away. Until another one curses loudly, prompting the others to turn quick in alarm.

One of the other mage’s leg was phasing through solid rock.

That was definitively not a good sign.

But before any can react, the air is filled with a static sensation, classical for them to recognise as the usage of magic nearby. Heads snap back to the group in the middle of the clearing, Legs ready to bolt sideways in any attempt of hostilities that may be turned in their direction. But the attack never comes. The ground beneath the cloaked figures lit instead, with a sickly green, the air grows heavy with a crushing weight on their souls, forcing them to stay back instead of stopping whatever may these folk do on their ground, whatever they did, it was better to not grow close.

Hands take at their hoods as the start chanting something, words laced in a single tone of godly and hellish beauty. The glow beneath brightents from sickly green to a burning white, with small waves of other colors underneath as their voices grow in volume. For a second, between their inhuman voices, their voices gain a small glimpse of purity, devoid of the taint of raw power that roared on those entities. They sounded humane, almost human if it weren’t for the frighteing magic surrounding them. And as their voices reached the peak of their incanation, their hoods were pulled away as they stared upwards, their words filled with pain and despair as they shouted to the endless sea of stars above. And the seven mages did nothing as they observed, for now all of the faces bore the same unerved gaze the red eyed one had done as he stared at one of them, frozen bodies betraying their basic instincts to flee for once as the veils were lifted at last.

For there, before them, lay seven, older, worn visages of themselves. Their voices roughed by time and shouting, eyes darkened from restless nights as they wore blackened rings of skin where eyelids once were. Their hairs unkept, longer, flowing to the wind their spell was creating. With dirt at their sickly skins, poisoned from who knows what as their eyes blazed with colorfull fires. Small glimpses of metal shining underneath the fabric as the wind attempted to push them away, but there was no need for, they knew exactly the looks of them beneath, most already had their own versions assigned to be forged by now.

The world did not give neither of them time to react.

A heaviness took hold of their chests, a weight chained to the ground that pulled and took most of them by surprise as they lost their balances. And hands grasped for branches, trunks and rocks to steady as a hand moved defensively towards their souls. Fear awoke in their souls as the observed helplessly spell circles cast upon their chests, magic far stronger than theirs towering wills over their as the screams of their doubles left in a final united roar... And then the night was lit in fire.

Their howling was the worst noise they had heard in their lives, barely human as flames licked their bodies in a delighted vicious hiss. Flesh boiling and coiling quickly as their souls blazed their colors on their chest, burning their flesh and bones to coals as their voices raged on the pain of death. grasping at weapons held tightly on their hands as they tried to keep their stances. groans and whines and gurgles choking their distress as blood boiled and entered their throats, metal melting and sublimating from the intense heat that despite everything did not obliterate their bodies instantly. And as their bodies faltered and fell, ghostly visages knelt still. Bathed in white that hid their looks like yet another curtain, hiding the gruesome process their bodies had gone through as they boiled, blistered and turned to coal. Something that would’ve been apreciated with their first death.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, their younger selves had not seen the entire process. As their chests aches and writhed in pain and collapsed on their needs curled, but alike their others, willed themselves to watch the moment their ghosts left their physical vessels. Hands reaching at them and pleading for the pain to stop just as their hands lit with the same mercyless white, quickly spreading to their bodies as they cried their begs in despair.

And just as the white became the only thing they could see, and their eyes hissed their last blink...

It was gone.

Their bodies rose, right in the spot they had been before. in the dark of the night. A sheet of sweat covering their bodies and damping their clothes as they turned in terror to their surroundings.

None of them could remember why.

Just heat and pain.
