Something simple for a change. I have long wanted one of these candlesticks, they’re known as Capstan Candlesticks. This one is circa 1630. They were highly collectable and extremely rare and came exclusively from The Netherlands. However in the 60’s British antique dealers went to Spain and Portugal and uncovered hundreds of them in old monasteries. When the monasteries were converted to electricity, they were stored away and forgotten. The collectors who had paid astronomical prices for them must have been mightily annoyed. I love the thought that my candlestick sat in a sparse monastic cell somewhere in Spain for hundreds of years illuminating old manuscripts. The violin is set up in the Baroque style, although it is certainly not that old, the varnish has seen better days. I love the gut strings.
