Thanks go to a greatly improved Duramax diesel engine that pumps out 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. Conventional tow ratings vary depending on configuration, but max out around 18,100 pounds for the 2500 HD and 23,300 for the 3500 HD. However, when it comes to using a fifth-wheel, the Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty still triumph over the Chevy. Lots can change over nine model years in the automotive industry, but for the Chevrolet Silverado, this is the stretch of time between loading Motor Trend’s golden calipers into its bed.

For 1999 and 2007, the Chevrolet Silverado became Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year, which in both cases meant the truck joined our long-term fleet. Our 2007 Silverado may have benefitted from the 367-horsepower 6.0-liter V-8 — that’s nearly 100 horsepower over the 5.3-liter V-8 that powered our ’99 Silverado — but fuel economy suffered. Over the last year, we achieved an average fuel economy of 14.0 mpg compared to the extended cab 1999 Silverado, the fuel economy of which ranged from about 18 mpg to 23 mpg. We’re pretty sure that no Motor Trend staff member paid anywhere from $75 to $100 to fill up the 1999 Silverado as we did with the new one now that we live with gas prices probably more than double what they were in 1999. We were impressed by the new Silverado’s balance of utility and comfort, something we certainly could not say about our 1999 truck. Motor Trend editors described the ’99 Silverado’s “too-trucklike highway ride” with descriptions like “It ain’t great,” to “martini shaker.” Said writer Chris Walton: “we think Chevy has the ability and an obligation to look into smoothing out the ride with, say, dual stage rear springs or more engineered shackles.” Nine model years may have brought many changes to Chevy’s best-selling model (though who knows for how many more months), but a four-speed automatic transmission remained at the core of both Silverados, and indeed at the core of our complaints about the new truck. On the positive side, both trucks could easily be called trusty workhorses, with the 1999 Silverado used for 22,245 miles and the 2007 Silverado for 19,027 miles. After seeing the progress of Chevy’s fullsize pickup from one generation to the next, we wonder what the next nine model years hold in store for the Silverado — besides a six-speed automatic transmission.
