Can you do a wwdits hurt/comfort drabble of regressed Nadja and fem!familiar reader caregiver?

Nadja, like the other vampires, has a history of not being the nicest to familiars, but this one is a bit different.

Nadja feels a special bond with you—you’re the only other girl in the house besides her dolly (and sometimes the Guide), and she immediately takes you under her wing. when she finds you regressed one day, you’re worried that she’ll be upset, but instead she’s delighted!! she sees you being small as a fun little bonding activity. she loves to brush your hair and put the two of you in cute matching outfits! and although she’s not the best with human food, she manages to get Guillermo something edible. you’re a bit of a messy eater, but that’s ok! everyone in the house is. Nadja just wipes up your little face and hands when you’re done.

Nadja loves having “girls nights”, and she goes all out when you’re small. she’ll paint your nails and let you do her makeup while the two of you watch Mamma Mia—not exactly a kids movie, but it’s much more child appropriate than anything else in the house. the two of you sing along to the songs and when your singing is more incoherent babbling than actual words, she just laughs and tells you about what a future talent you are!!

she still swear around you when you’re small, but she also gets upset when anyone else does it. she’s constantly covering your ears so that you don’t have to hear whatever nonsense is being talked about at any given moment

Let me just sing the praises of my big, wide husband for a sec. As we recall, Laszlo noticed that something out of the ordinary was going on with Guillermo. His master might have noticed it; even Nadja noticed when he wasn’t around much. But it was Laszlo who was intrigued enough to find out more. And he didn’t stop there. Being a man of science, his curiosity got the better of him.

In a way, he took Guillermo under his wing. Like he did with baby Colin Robinson, Laszlo became a teacher. A caregiver. Like with baby Colin, Guillermo became more than just an experiment. As he showed in 5.06 Urgent Care, when Laszlo thought that the jig was up and that Nandor was reaching out a hand to end Guillermo’s life, you could see the concern on his face.

It was not that long ago that Laszlo didn’t give a shit. To Laszlo, Guillermo was JUST a familiar. A lowly human. He was more than prepared to let Guillermo be executed for the Baron’s “death”. He advocated for killing Guillermo after the slaughter at the theatre. He sealed him into a coffin and shipped him overseas and then kept him in the coffin for a week when he came back.

But this is a different Laszlo. This Laszlo is closer than ever to his humanity. He cared for a child, really cared. And the loss of that child cut him to the core. And now, one might argue that Guillermo - the other parent of that child - is there to fill that void. This whole thing started because Laszlo saw an interesting study in Guillermo. But it’s more than that now. The experiment with Guillermo has evolved into a full blown relationship. Laszlo has protected Guillermo’s secret, even from his darling Nadja. And it’s possible he’s used Guillermo’s valuable blood to evoke life changes for himself.

So, in conclusion — Guillermo and Laszlo, sittin in a tree…

Cgs!Laszlo & Nadja Headcanons

i’ve had a few wwdits asks and decided to post for both laszlo and nadja bc they’re simply so mama and papa coded! <3

Firstly, Laszlo was made to be a caregiver. We’re all thinking of the absolutely unbelievable plotline that was baby Colin, aren’t we? Well, I think that after Colin grew up far too quickly for Laszlo to catch up with, there was a deep, gnawing desire for him to take care of someone in the same way. In comes a special little regressor in the lives of the vampires!

Laszlo adores when his little takes interest in the fine arts. A bit pretentious of him? Maybe. But totally in character. He’ll pick up his little vampire with ease and sit them on the piano stool next to him and teach them how to play no matter how young they’re feeling. Super tiny? He’ll laugh at his little banging on the keys and gently play a tune that he knows will put a smile on their face. A bit bigger? He’ll gently guide their hands and glance over to Nadja with a very proud look on his face when they carefully play on their own. Very good, darling! Beethoven could not play as spectacularly as you.

Laszlo loves to tell stories in the mansion’s sitting room right before the sun rises. He’s an amazing storyteller, creating spinning tales of lords, ladies and King Arthur’s roundtable set with different voices for each character. He watches carefully when their eyes start to droop and they look sleepy enough to slumber as soon as the lid of their coffin closes. It’s either stories or early morning reruns on HGTV.

When Nadja is in charge of bedtime for her and Laszlo’s little one, it includes soft lullabies and her fingers or a brush through the regressor’s hair. It almost makes her giddy when her little one runs up to her before bed with a brush, comb, hair bow or bonnet in their hands and a sweet smile on their face. She’ll have them sit on the floor in front of the crackling fireplace while she scoots a plush armchair up and settles down to hum a gentle tune while being equally as gentle with their hair. Are you tired, little one? Papa will come and carry you to bed.

Mornings are frequently energy filled with Laszlo and Nadja, especially after a hearty breakfast. Laszlo is usually the last to rise in the mornings, and more than once his little has been sent to his coffin on behest of Nadja to loudly bang on it and drag him out with happy giggles. Nadja is a troublemaker that way, always sending their regressor to unknowingly tease or cause Laszlo grief because she knows they’ll get away with anything.

It’s always fun with the both of them. There’s nothing they love more than hearing their little laugh and play, and they’ll do just about anything their little wants to make that happen. Games in the house go from Laszlo chasing their little around and building pillow forts to Nadja getting together every bit of clothing in the house so they can all play dress up together. (Guillermo and Nandor tend to be invited for dress up too. If their little demands a larger audience, by goodness will they get it!)

Both of them are pretty lax when it comes to rules and expected behaviour of their little. Nadja is quicker to berate their regressor than Laszlo is, but her scolding is usually tame despite her exasperation and is along the lines of, Sweetie, you can’t keep playing on that machine with Colin Robinson! and I have told you to be careful with Dolly. I will not remind you again. Laszlo is stern only when he truly needs to be, or when their little is being fussier than usual. He’s not afraid to take them by the hand and march them out of the basement when they’re caught rifling through the freezer. Darling, you know you’re not to be in there. Ah-ah, no excuses. Come along.

Nadja and Laszlo are both big on physical contact. Laszlo will pick up his little out of nowhere and swing them around just to hear their giggles. He loves to give them piggyback rides too! During story time he’ll pat his lap for them to come and curl up with their head under his chin. He gives the best cuddles. Nadja is a very scary tickle monster, and she is amazing at calming an overwhelmed or upset little down with back rubs and a steady hand on theirs, her thumb circling the top of their hand.

The couple use so many pet names for their regressor. Laszlo is extremely creative of course: Darling, sweetheart, vampling, sweet tooth, my little vampire, small one. Nadja is simpler but just as sweet: Little one, sweetie, baby, honey.

Laszlo and Nadja are ultimately a pair of sweethearts that always dote on and protect their little one. <3

Age Regressor Guillermo de la Cruz Moodboard + headcannons <3

Guillermo regresses due to stress and has an age range of 1-6.

Although his age does fluctuate he tends to be around four or five most often.

Loves loves LOVES braiding Nandor’s hair when he regresses! Nandor let’s him because he can’t resist the puppy dog eyes…. Totally not because he enjoys being around little baby Guillermo.. (it definitely is because he loves Guillermo)

His main caregiver is Nandor. Although he does get baby sat by Laszlo on occasion.

Biggest lego fan!! Although Nandor has to switch him over to mega blocks when he’s on the younger side, he tends to put things in his mouth.

Worlds sweetest baby! He’s not very fussy and tends to be a bit shy.

When he is happy he tends to repeat words over and over again. Either a word someone else has said around him or a phrase from TV.

He is such a creative baby. Most of his regression is spent crafting with Nandor.

Most of the time his art is just a bunch of vague crayon scribbles with a ton of stickers…. He is not trusted with glitter when small.

He’s rarely ever alone.. the house can be pretty spooky if you’re alone.

He absolutely HATES Nadja and Laszlo’s taxidermy collection, they freak him out so bad when he’s tiny.

He didn’t have much gear before he came to be Nandor’s familiar, but when Nandor discovered his regression and became his caregiver that quickly changed.

A lot of his toys were “bought” by Nandor. He even made Guillermo a paci COVERED in glitter!!

He totally watches My Little Pony with Nandor but Nandor might be a bit more interested in the show than he is.

His speech changes drastically when he is small. He has a hard time making the sounds of Ss or Rs. Nandor finds it so painfully endearing.

Nandor’s calls him “Baby Bat” or “little baby Guillermo” .

He tends to call just Nandor by his name. Although he has called Nandor dada on occasion, but he’s always very flustered when he remembers in an adult state of mind.

Nadja mostly counciously regresses, and try very hard to not let people see it outside the house. She isn't ashamed of her regression, but she has to fight so hard to be respected that she really doesn't want to deal with people disrespecting her and her little self

That said, the first time the guide saw tiny Nadja it was one specially hard day on the council and she was so so so stressed that when she sat on the throne to rest a little she just slipped and the Guide went immediately into caregiver mode and all the wraiths were soooooo nice to her

When she went to talk to her the Guide was like "wait isn't everyone like this? And Nadja had to explain that no.........

Anyways the Guide is a flip!!! Nadja is too!!! The wraiths loooooove to babysit they like to give little parties and put them in little clothes and make mock judgments because they love to say YOU'RE SENTENCED TO DEATH!!!!

Tiny Nadja is super clingy but she won't ask for it she will stay close to whoever she wants to cuddle and stare and them until they're like "up?" and she will say NO and then climb on their lap

She likes to bite and chew on eeeeeevrything

She likes to dress up her toys and with Nandor, she loves to put makeup on him and have a beauty contest (she even let's him win sometimes for him to not be too sad)

If she wants attention she won't stop bothering everyone about it, she will sit on people's laps, pull their hairs, take shat they're doing from their hands, everything until they give her what she wants

She loves kisses and when she's feeling happy she'll kiss everyone and blow kisses to random people on the street

I just really really love how they're not pretending the adults in the household aren't just all colin's parents actually. there's no nuance about it they are all just raising him together!!! it's so cute!!! laszlo is obviously the number one parent but guillermo is clearly taking on the brunt of the caregiving, being the one to tend to his human needs like buying him clothes and being really overenthusiastic about his youtube channel and saving him from the dangers of the decaying house, but it doesn't stop there!! nadja calls herself colin's mommy in episode one and at the end of episode 3 all four of them are cheering him on as he performs! there's no handwaving about what each of them thinks of him, none of them are uncomfortable with the idea of a child being in the house, theyve all embraced this new colin and are all supporting him in their own little ways!!! they are literally just co-parenting, colin just has four (5 if you include marwa) parents who love him and everyone is cool with that!!!!!

AU where Laszlo has Dissociative Identity Disoder, these are his headmates

Lazarus just wants to be left alone usually. He hates humans, he thinks they're all untrustworthy and are out to harm him. He hates being around Guillermo and isn't happy with the rest of the system crushing on Sean. Poor Seanie had to be nearby when he fronted once. He just stormed off rudely. It was awkward for Laszlo the next day. He broke the camera once after warning the crew to fuck off. He has alot of anxiety and nightmares tend to make him front. He's the headmate who's been around Nadja for years and they love each other dearly. Nadja is his favorite person and gets pissed when she's disrespected. He's antisocial but generally harmless. He'll usually lock himself away and do his makeup or write music. Maybe play the piano menacingly as Lsesie suggests.

Jackie Daytona tends to front in situations where everyone else in the system would feel shy or anxious. He's very confident and likes to hog the camera during interviews. He's significantly more brave than Laszlo is. He rode a horse with Nandor once on a farm. He thinks he's a cowboy or something but no <3. He's a huge show off and gentlem and they're dating a bit. He'll take her out on his big green tractor if you catch my drift 🤭. He WILL take off any makeup or nail polish if he finds it once he's fronting. It's just not his style. He'll tolerate black nail polish. He's not a fan of sparkles like the rest are.

Leslie is the caregiver and gatekeeper who manages switches between headmates and tries to keep the peace but sometimes Jackie and Lazarus are too heated to listen 🙃. He usually does keep things calm. He likes to assist in writing music with Laszlo and Nadja. He and Jackie assisted Laszlo in writing "Come on Eileen." He flirts with Nadja but he's not that close to her like Laszlo is. He usually prefers acting as Laszlo because he's shy around cameras. He LOVES glitter and fun nail polish.

I don't have the energy to write a full WWDITS fanfic, so here are my little!Nadja headcanons!

- She's a flip for starters! Nadja can totally caregive, but she tends to regress. She used to take care of Nandor sometimes before Guillermo came along, but now she mostly just regresses.

- She doesn't have a set little age. Being immortal has made her let go of a lot of set developmental stages, so her headspace is a bit all over the place.

- Lazlo is her primary caregiver, and she calls him "Bampas" (Greek for papa). He sings to her lots and is a very kissy caregiver for her.

- She loves to play pretend, and her favorite game is "mommy" which her poor dolly hates.

- Like most little vampires, she teethes constantly and has a major biting problem. (Guillermo has to wear one of those dog training suits when dealing with her)

- The little one is constantly on the move! She crawls all over the house, on the walls and ceilings, and is constantly getting into places where she shouldn't be.

- She regresses the most when sleepy, which hardly ever makes her cranky. Instead, she gets clingy and docile.

- Nadja loves her hair pet and played with, Lazlo or Guillermo always braids hers for her, but she loves to play with Nandor's when he's small, too.

- Although they regress to around the same not-really-one-age, Nadja always insists Nandor's the baby of the house, since he tends to be non-verbal more often.

- Bossy little one; Nadja always wants to do things her way and get what she wants. Lazlo tends to spoil her with anything she wants, but Guillermo's learning to be a little bit more firm when he babysits.

Adrien had felt a bit guilty when he took advantage of the rush to return to the suite to disappear to transform—he knew they’d worry, since the Akuma was likely going to look for him, but he had to help Ladybug defeat it.

The Akuma sucked the color and joy out of whatever it touched, the power turning into clothing and accessories that resembled Luka’s. It made an odd amount of sense, if the Akuma was a fan upset by Adrien’s fake relationship. So far it had leather pants, ornate boots, a leather jacket, kohl around its eyes, black fingernails, and hair that was black with… rainbow tips?

As Chat Noir got closer, he realized he recognized the person under all that.

“Wayhem?”

The Akuma turned toward him, face contorted in a sneer. “That’s Fade-Out to you! No one else can be happy until I am! Give me your Miraculous!”

He’d figured it was a fan, but had never imagined Wayhem would be the one, that he’d harbored feelings like that for Adrien. He’d been completely blind to it. What else had he been blind to?

Chat barely dodged when Fade-Out tried to grab him, then was pulled out of danger by Ladybug’s yoyo.

“I think the Akuma is in his glove,” she said as Fade-Out tried to find a way up to them.

When Chat peered, he could see on his right hand was a black fingerless motorcycle glove; embossed on the back was Adrien’s face. It was probably the face from his life-size cardboard cut-out he’d signed for Wayhem after he’d acted as Adrien’s body-double when Gorilla was Akumatized.

“So I need to let him get close enough to touch me, make sure I hit the glove.”

Ladybug frowned. “It’s too risky. Let’s see what we get with Lucky Charm!”

A red-and-black postless pillory fell into her arms, and she grimaced at it.

“I guess we need to immobilize him?” Chat asked.

Ladybug sighed. “You know my Lucky Charms aren’t that simple, chaton.”

She glanced around, seemingly looking for an answer, then pointed at a road sign, the one to rue du Chat-qui-Pêche, the smallest street in Paris—or, rather, the narrowest.

“The pillory will just barely fit in there, and with the drainpipes…”

Chat grinned. “Shall we pillory an Akuma, m’Lady?”

It took less than a minute of cat puns to get Fade-Out chasing him, and the moment the Akuma was in the alley, Ladybug snapped the pillory around his neck. His forward motion was halted so abruptly when it caught on a drainpipe that he lost his feet and wound up with his hands splayed on the pavement. Chat was able to Cataclysm the glove quickly and with no danger.

Then it was just a matter of Ladybug purifying the Akuma, unlatching the pillory, and tossing it in the air to release the Miraculous Cure, and Wayhem was on his hands and knees in the tiny street.

Once they’d fist-bumped, Chat turned her way. “I’ll handle the young man—I’ve more time before I detransform.”

Ladybug smiled and nodded, then yoyoed away.

Wayhem was staring up at him in dawning horror. “Oh, no. I was Akumatized?”

Chat offered him a hand. “Yeah. You okay?”

Once on his feet, Wayhem leaned against the wall with a sigh. “It’s so dumb. I was just a little jealous. I didn’t— Well, there’s this guy who’s a model, Adrien Agreste?”

He nodded, figuring he was expected to.

“Well, I was a ridiculous fanboy for a while, and kinda obsessive, and then he asked for my help when he was targeted by an Akuma. We became friends. And he… well, he just announced he has a boyfriend.”

Wayhem winced, rubbing his neck, his expression embarrassed.

“I didn’t even know… that was an option.”

Chat patted his shoulder; he felt badly that Wayhem had gotten caught up in this, but it was over and done with—and Adrien wouldn’t go back and fake-date Lila even knowing this.

“Honestly, maybe it wasn’t, though. You don’t know how he met his boyfriend or the circumstances,” he finally offered.

“I know.” Wayhem sighed. “It was just a moment of disappointment, you know?”

“And Hawkass took advantage.” Chat offered him a smile. “Just try to be happy for your friend, then. There’s someone out there for you.”

That got a little smile, just as the Miraculous beeped at him.

“That’s my cue to skiddoo!”

He gave the boy a little salute and was gratified when he got the same back, then he vaulted away, back toward the hotel.

Once he found a place to detransform and give Plagg some cheese, he snuck in and back to the suite, only to find Luka in the midst of pacing, Marinette and Penny looking concerned, and Jagged looking a bit irate.

When Luka saw him, he immediately stopped, and something in the older boy’s body language eased. It struck Adrien suddenly that Luka had been worried, something he hadn’t figured would happen.

“Sorry, wound up getting stuck downstairs. Figured I’d stay put until the Ladyblog put out the all clear.”

“Same thing happened to me,” Marinette offered.

Luka dragged his fingers through his hair. “It’s fine. These things happen.”

Jagged snorted. “You’re not fine, kid. You’re a bloody mess. Practically chewed all the polish off his nails. It was like when Penny misplaces me, only worse.”

“I don’t misplace you,” she muttered. “You wander off and terrorize people with Fang.”

A glance at Luka’s nails confirmed Jagged’s words, though. Most of his black nailpolish was gone.

“Oh. Well, we can get the spa folks up again. I kind of want mine done, too,” Adrien commented.

Luka frowned, then nodded. “Sorry… I just… I’m responsible for Juleka, and you both went missing, and the Akuma attack, and…”

Marinette stood, putting a hand on his arm. “Hey. You’re not responsible for me, or for Adrien.”

“But I’m his boyfriend now.”

Adrien blinked. “Is that how it works?”

Maybe it was—sometimes in movies and TV shows that was how it worked.

“No.” Penny’s voice was almost deadly. “That’s not how it works. You’re not his caregiver.”

Luka looked uncertain, like he was ready to argue.

Jagged scowled at him. “Nope, kid. I know Anarka’s a free spirit, but you’re not responsible for the world.”

Marinette offered Luka a hesitant smile. “You’ve got an independent boyfriend, Luka.”

The smile Luka attempted back looked very feeble.

“I’m sorry I worried you, Luka,” Adrien said, scratching the back of his head anxiously. “Most of the time my father keeps me shut in my room and forgets about me. So I didn’t think to let you guys know… but I didn’t have my phone on me, either. Whoops.”

Jagged turned the scowl on Adrien. “Okay, that’s gotta be addressed, too. So not okay. Social media blitz.”

Penny gestured to the computer. “You have a picture to post, anyway. Might as well fire some shots while you’re at it.”

Marinette and Luka exchanged a dark look, and then Luka drew himself up. “Okay. Your dad’s an asshole. Let’s air some dirty laundry?”

Adrien grinned. “I thought you’d never ask.”

Nostalgia and Memory part II

Referencing Alzheimer’s

After the idea and the story were going in the right direction, I started researching for Alzheimer material, live action and animation, fortunately, they are really good references, but I think it’s a disease that needed much more exposure and awareness.

1. Allergan campaign asks Alzheimer’s caregivers to ‘Hold on to Hope:

This sources inspired me because of the colours, and the narrative idea of the lights going out as the memories started to dim.

2. A Young Caregiver’s Letter to Her Father with Alzheimer’s

This is a design and animation reference. Also the fact that the narrator is the real daughter of an Alzheimer’s patient was very touching and vivid. The source has a great narrative and visual composition that will serve as guidance to my film.

3. [Falling Lessons: Erasure One] - A Short Film by Anh Vu about Alzheimers:

This is a poetic and moody source. The sound, the slow camera and the cello in the background set up an inspiration to me. Also is the testimony of a female protagonist dealing with the Alzheimer’s of his father. 

All these pieces and my previous visual Moodboard lead me to a visual approach.

Probably the hardest part for me was to imagine a young Martha, because all the memories I had were of a beautiful old lady, and to recreate her youth was a challenge. As a director, I decided to give some tender features, concentrating on her eyes which by her old pictures are the ones that give all the character emotions.

Age Regressor Nadja Of Antipaxos Moodboard + Headcannons

Regresses to such a wide range of 0-10. She didn’t have a very happy upbringing so it makes sense for her.

Although she does find being a baby so so comforting.

Her caregiver is Laszlo!! He absolutely adores her and Nadja looks at him like he hung the moon.

She does not care for modern toys, she finds them obnoxious. She absolutely adores calico critters though. She has the mansion and has the most dramatic story with them. Laszlo insists that he is present when she plays with them because it’s like watching a Television show.

Nadja has a large collection of vintage toys! Her absolute favorites are her rattles, she has a chest jam packed with them.

She has tons of Dollies to but she mostly just plays with Nadja Doll they’re very close! They still match outfits even when Nadja is small it’s Nadja’s favorite part of her day!

Most of her gear is vintage, all except her adult pacifiers. When Guillermo saw she was still using an ancient looking baby pacifier he immediately bought her first ever adult pacifier.

She immediately started on her adult pacifier collection and she has just about every kind there is!!

She adores story time with her Laszlo!! He reads to her just about every night.

Nadja is spoiled rotten, because she is so used to getting anything she wants from Laszlo. If Nadja wants something all she has to say is “please, papa” with the puppy dog eyes and Laszlo will do everything in his power to get it.

Laszlo has nicknames galore for her! He hardly ever calls her by her name.

She will only eat out of her bottle! Eating the typical way is too scary for her..

Biggest finger painter ever!! She loves making paintings for the people she loves. (Mostly Laszlo)

Empathy

Charlie Irvine and Laurel Farrington

Try this thought experiment: imagine a mediator without empathy. How and what would they do? Would there be drawbacks? Benefits?

The response to these questions probably depends on our own experience of empathy. This simple yet often misunderstood term masks a complex and fascinating set of ideas about human connection. Because we believe empathy is at the core of mediation, we consider it a construct worth closer scrutiny. Below is a summary of our recent work. London: Bloomsbury, 2017.)

Empathy

The English word is relatively recent (early 20th Century) and comes from a German idea of understanding art from the dual perspective of artist and observer. A modern and widely-accepted definition is “the ability to identify what someone is thinking or feeling and to respond to their thoughts and feelings with an appropriate emotion” [our emphasis] (Simon Baron-Cohen, Zero Degrees of Empathy: A New Theory of Human Cruelty. London: Allen Lane, 2011, p. 12). Note the two parts to this definition. Empathy requires both the cognitive (thinking) and also the emotional (or affective) element :a balance and synergy of head and heart.

Cognitive empathy requires thought and reflection to access another’s mental state. It calls for self-awareness and the capacity for perspective taking: understanding what the world might look like from another’s viewpoint. (Terms in italics are explained in Irvine and Farrington 2017.) On the other hand, emotional empathy is a reactive, automatic response to another’s emotions: feeling what they are feeling. It can trigger empathic concern, the gold-star feature of emotional empathy: this motivates us to assist in another’s distress.

What would it look like if only cognitive or emotional empathy were experienced? Psychopaths often have cognitive empathy yet lack the emotional counterpart. They may be highly skilled at perspective taking; but are likely to use information about others’ thoughts and feelings to meet their own needs. Without empathic concern, they lack the motivation to help. Conversely, people with high levels of emotional empathy who may be missing the ‘brake’ of cognitive empathy can become flooded with emotion, skidding into the terrain of emotion contagion and personal distress. Their upset at another’s suffering can deflect attention towards themselves and away from the person needing an empathic response.

Empathy can be viewed as ‘fixed’ or dispositional, dependent on genes, brain structure and early experience. It is also situational, fluctuating according to life stage, occupation or perceived similarity to another. It is likely to dwindle if we are unwell or having a bad day.

Fortunately empathy is also a skill. Mediators are trained to think empathically about clients; to view them, not as victims or culprits, but as people in difficulty who, with some assistance and encouragement, can rediscover their problem-solving resources. We can’t – and shouldn’t – prevent other people’s anger/distress affecting us. On the contrary, empathy unlocks our genuine concern to help clients achieve the best outcomes.

Many of our standard communication techniques are helpful. Open-ended questions, accurate summaries, acknowledgement, attentive listening and appreciative enquiry all contribute to our respectful understanding of others’ worldview. They let clients know that we not only ‘get’ them [the perspective taking part of cognitive empathy] but are genuinely interested in their wellbeing [the empathic concern element of emotional empathy].

Attachment

Farrington’s model of empathy in mediation goes further. Many will be familiar with Bowlby’s “Attachment Theory” (EJM Bowlby, Attachment and Loss: Attachment, vol 1. London, Hogarth Press, 1969.) He noticed how deeply young children were affected by the presence of their caregiver. With this person nearby children would explore and experiment, periodically glancing round for reassurance. If they withdrew the child became distressed, all thoughts of play abandoned during the frantic search for their attachment figure. On her return they would gradually calm down and continue exploring.

In fact, Bowlby concluded that any type of distressing situation triggered the automatic survival-driven response to seek out the trusted person who the child viewed as a ‘secure base’. Attachment theory posits that “an attentive, empathic caregiver creates a physically and emotionally secure environment, helping to regulate a child’s emotions and, crucially, reduce stress” (Irvine and Farrington 2017, p. 227). It also documents the lifelong impact of unavailable or unpredictable attachment figures and, crucially, the manner in which attachment behaviours continue into adult life, reactivated at times of distress and vulnerability.

Mediation in Practice

Conflict is stressful and triggers negative emotions. Mediation can add another layer of anxiety. Clients are usually fearful about confronting each other – afraid of the other’s anger and of humiliation, and worried whether they will be able to control their own emotions. An empathic mediator may in effect function as an attachment figure, a ‘secure base’ enabling parties to both enter and remain in the room. The mediator’s empathy helps clients reduce their level of emotional arousal. They become calmer and start engaging creatively in problem-solving: much as, when younger, they would resume exploration in the reassuring presence of their caregiver. People can now display curiosity rather than fear, engaging in the work needed to reach an understanding of each other’s perspective and hopefully to sustainable agreements.

Opportunities for empathy are built into the mediation process. It’s common to ask one person to listen while the other speaks uninterrupted. Even this simple act of listening can have a de-escalating effect: it resembles empathy, whatever the person is actually thinking, allowing the speaker to develop their narrative uninterrupted. The move is then reciprocated. If things go well the parties start to respond directly to one another, contributing to each other’s shifts of perspective and understanding. “Mediation offers disputants opportunities to appreciate both events and emotions behind each other’s perspective: in other words, to experience empathy” (Ibid, p. 236).

Does the mediator need to be empathic?

A great deal of current practice is built on and encourages empathy. Simply by applying mainstream techniques, a mediator will resemble an empathic person. However, empathy is in the eye of the beholder. Ultimately the parties judge whether the mediator seems understanding and genuinely interested in their dispute. In a 2005 study mediation trainees tended to rate themselves more highly than their instructors across all skills, the gap being widest for “displaying empathy” (Etty Lieberman, Yael Foux-Levy and Peretz Segal (2005) ‘Beyond Basic Training: A Model for Developing Mediator Competence.’ 23 Conflict Resolution Quarterly 237, 248.)

Mediators must communicate empathy: the parties need to know that that the mediator has a respectful understanding of their thoughts and feelings and solicitude for their safety and wellbeing. Attachment theory underpins our understanding of how and why this is such a key task for the mediator.

Empathy is woven into human life. If we are lucky, our early experience of being cared for and, dare we say it, being loved, enables us to give and receive empathy throughout the lifespan. Mediation is a process that touches on much of what it means to be human: inevitably, it calls for and calls forth empathy.

Friendship bracelets

Guillermo had been working for hours to make matching bracelets for him and his family; his family, of course, being Nandor,Collin Robinson,Nadja and Laszlo. He had taken several different colors of embroidery thread and got to work making everyone their own unique bracelet. He had even made special charms to go with the bracelets! He was sure that everyone was going to love them. He had also made a bracelet for Nadja’s dolly! It was a lot less effort to make as it was much smaller than everyone else’s!

Once Guillermo finished all the bracelets he gathered them all up preparing to give them to all of his friends. Sneaking around the house trying to find someone was harder than it should be! Spotting his caregiver Guillermo decided it’d be funny to attempt to spook THE Nandor the relentless. Nandor had heard him obviously but decided to play along with Guillermo, sensing that he was regressed.

“Nandor, Made something for you!” Guillermo shouted. “Fucking guy!” Nandor exclaimed, pretending to be surprised by Guillermo “ what have you made for me ,my little fruit bat?” Nandor followed up his exclamation with a smile. Guillermo waved Nandor’s bracelet in-front of his face. “ oh wow! What a wonderful piece of jewelry, is it really for me?” Nandor questioned, being overly theatrical with the way he spoke, making Guillermo giggle. “Yea made one for everyone!” Guillermo declared with the biggest grin on his face. The taller vampire pouted a bit but decided to pretend the fact that he wasn’t the only one his familiar made a bracelet for. He decided to pester Nadja and Laszlo until they came to the fancy room to receive Guillermo’s gifts. Looking down at his beloved familiar, who was currently tying Nandor’s bracelet on him, a fond smile graced his face.

“Well, my little vampire bat, I think the others are awaiting theirs in the fancy room. Let’s go distribute your little creations.” Nandor announced abruptly after Guillermo finished the knot on his bracelet. Wild giggles erupted from the human as he darted to the sitting room.

“Bloody hell ,Gizmo.” Laszlo shouted “calm your boy ,Nandor he’s gone mental!” Laszlo continued after his conversation with Collin Robinson was cut short, much to collins dismay and Nadja’s relief. “Shut up ,Laszlo.” Nadja snapped “what did you call us here for ,Nandor.” She questioned,bored of the whole situation.

“Made surprise for you!” Guillermo chirped quickly before Nandor could reply for him. Quickly handing out his bracelets to his chosen family before they could begin bickering. “ these are very… nice ,gizmo. But what are they.” Nadja quirked her brow. “ Bracelets!” Guillermo grinned “friendship bracelets so we all got one!” Guillermo quickly followed up making sure they all understood what they were. “I suppose they aren’t terrible, gizmo” Laszlo said immediately tying it to his wrist, secretly loving it.

“Hey ,Guillermo, did you know that friendship bracelets first got popular at around 1980s-“ Collin began to ramble and everyone else replied with a groan.
