Empty Nester Home Renovation

Located in Coronado, California, and recently renovated by Brittney Nielsen of Brittney Nielsen Interior Design, this home was designed as a second home for a couple with 3 sons. They were soon-to-be empty nesters and have since sold the family home and moved into this house. The home was a track home built in the 1970’s that hadn’t been updated. It is in a wonderful location on the canal in the Coronado Cays and the clients are avid boat and water sports enthusiasts.

The client wanted to modernize the floor plan and add natural light to the space, so the team took the house down to the studs, added approximately 450 square feet and reimagined the entire layout. The exterior elevation had a Spanish feel but the client wanted a clean lined modern feel inside. See more details shared by the interior designer of this inspiring empty nester renovation.

There was a little dirt road, dusty and white, a scar in the skin of the Scottish highlands. It stretched from an unnamed beach, curled around the rolling crevices, and snaked through the small valleys until the ocean was just a whisper behind the hills. There had been a storm the night before such that, when the sun warmed the morning the next day, the world was sighed contently in the aftermath, the still ocean glistened quietly, and the grass was the color of emeralds, dotted with the bright yellows and pinks of wildflowers.

For many long minutes, a silver pickup curled through the highlands. The driver, a thin man with fiery hair and pale, hollow cheeks, propped his elbow against the window sill and nestled his fist under his jaw. His mouth unhinged into a wide, slow gasp for air. He chomped into the atmosphere, nibbled on the findings, and gave a satisfied “Mmm.” Before long, he was pulling off the little road and onto a pool of gravel in front of an iron gate.

The driver squinted a bit at the gate door, sizing it up. The thick iron bars were flaking and orange from the years of rain. A heavy, rudimentary padlock held it firmly shut. On either side was a series of barbed wire fencing which stretched for acres on either side and curved back towards a hillside. Within its borders, there was a large, brown barn and a small grey cottage, from which there emitted no lights, no movement. For sure, there were acres of land behind the buildings, but what they contained were hidden from prying eyes by a few trees and a wooden fence within the property. The young man strained over his steering wheel to watch for any signs of life, eyes darting to and fro, neck craned. He pressed his palm firmly on his horn, and the blaring scream shattered the silent morning. A flock of crows slid off of a large oak in front of the little house, and lifted itself into the sky, leaving the property more lifeless than before.

The young man reached over to the passenger side of his cabin, pulling a hairpin from the cup holder, and reluctantly peeled himself out of the truck. He trudged toward the gate with the foot-shuffling of a man prisoner to his own drowsiness. He slid the hairpin into the padlock, and wiggled it around without much enthusiasm. The lock clicked, and thudded to the ground.

He yawned.

As he pulled his truck around in front of the dull cottage, he was vaguely aware of another set of tire tracks. They were thin, likely a smaller car, and had a braided pattern. He frowned; there was no other car in sight. Somebody had been there after the storm had passed late last night, and had gone.

Brushing it off, he locked his truck and pushed his way into the cottage.

It was like walking into solitary confinement. All the blinds were drawn, and plaid curtains over them. The few beams of light that filtered into the small living room were obstructed by glistening winnows of dust. Everything inside was covered with a sheet of it. Everything was dirty, but nothing was out of place.

In the center of the small living room sat corduroy couch which swore that in its youth it was plush, comfortable, and a rich, stylish cherry red; now, past its prime, the limp cushions were a faded salmon with grey hairs, whispering about the days before it peaked. It had been dragged across the pale carpet, leaving a shadow of where it had once been in the center of the living room, and was now just shy of the the entrance to the loo, which stood wide open. From the edges of the couch spilled an arm and a leg, extended longingly for the door. The owner of these desperate limbs, whose tan cheeks and salt-and-pepper hair melted seamlessly into the old sofa, was wedged chest-deep into the flat cushions. A tribal blanket was twisted around his waist and spilled down his leg.

The younger man hovered over him, then gave a sharp kick to the underside of the sofa, and a layer of dust was coughed into the air. The sleeping man gave a low, broken groan, and rolled over onto his back. There was a white line from the corner of his lips down his chin. The boy shook his head.

“Coffee?” he demanded gayly, voice loud and piercing in the still room as he turned towards the kitchen.

He wasn’t entirely convinced, by the lack of any sound or even shuffle of a response, that he had woken the grey man. But he padded cheerfully into the kitchen. The fridge, he found, was barren, save for a half-eaten tub of margarine. The fruit bowl on the counter was sticky and empty and covered in dust. In the sink lay an orange rain jacket, which reeked of salt, beer, and fish, but was still dripping with the tap water which, presumably, had cleaned it off the night before. Nonetheless, he threw the back of his hand over his nose and knocked aside the curtains over the window so he could prop it open.

“Your house is full of lovely smells this morning!” he called into the other room.

This time, he could hear a shifting. Feet hitting the floor. The blanket tossed onto the back of the sofa. Familiar sounds. Sounds of life.
