Bem-vindo! Welcome!
This page is dedicated to English translated versions of the Turma Da Monica Jovem/Monica’s Gang Teens manga!
Turma Da Mônica Jovem (TMJ) is a manga based on the original Brazilian comic/animation series Turma Da Mônica created by Mauricio De Sousa.
Here’s the Masterpost!
I started this for my friend, who I ranted to about this franchise, but she’s English and doesn’t understand Portuguese so I decided to translate it for her and thought how many people would probably enjoy this series, too.
This is NOT the official translation of TMJ and as far as I know, there is none available. I also do NOT gain any money from doing this, I do this for fun and my personal enjoyment of my favourite franchise.
If I am ever asked by the official creator and/or his team to take this down, I will, no questions asked.
Isso NAO e uma traducao oficial de TMJ e pelo o que eu saiba, nao existe. Eu NAO ganho dinheiro fazendo isso, eu faco por o meu divertimento porque e a minha franquia favorita.
Se o criador official ou seu time me pede pra tirar isso da internete, eu farei, sem perguntas.
To understand the manga, if you haven’t watched the English dubbed animations from when the character’s were kids, you have to understand their dynamic. (Which I’ll explain, if you haven’t but the episodes are also available on YouTube)
Monica’s Gang has 4 main friends:
Mônica
She’s the ‘leader’ of the group, the main gal of this franchise.
She’s known for her red dress, her buck-teeth (or just big teeth), her blue stuffed rabbit (his name is Sansão in Portuguese, Samson in English) which she uses to beat up the boys who bully and tease her ( namely Cascão/Smudge and Cebolinha/Jimmy Five/Spring Onion)
Her best friend is Magali/Maggy.
I should also mention there’s always been a subplot of a romance between her and Cebolinha - it is accepted that deep down they love each other and they are meant to be endgame, however they have a history of not getting along.
Cebolinha / Jimmy Five / Spring Onion
He’s known for planning and plotting projects to defeat Monica be “o Dono da Rua” (“the owner of the street” is the direct translation however it doesn’t convey the meaning of the phrase) or “ the toughest guy on the block” is the best way I can currently translate the phrase.
He also tends to be unable to pronounce his R’s in most Portuguese words, trading them for L’s (dyslalia).
They tend to be R’s that are rolled in Latin languages such as Spanish or Portuguese.
He, and his best friend Cascão / Smudge, often tease Monica for being short, chubby and buck-toothed which earns him some beatings from her and her stuffed rabbit.
Okay so, his Brazilian Portuguese name is Cebolinha, which, in translation means Spring Onion, however, in the official translation of Turma Da Mônica, his English name is Jimmy Five.
The reason they chose Jimmy Five is due to him being known for his 5 strings of hair, as seen in the above image, but personally, I hate that name for him, sorry.
Cebolinha isn’t a normal name in Brazil, so Spring Onion fits fine for the character.
His nickname is Ce, so I'll use SP (Spring Onion) for the English translation.
So argue all you want but I’m changing his English name from Jimmy Five to Spring Onion.
Magali / Maggy
She’s known for her yellow dress, her white cat Mingau / Porridge and her insatiable appetite.
She loves food, all food, but her most iconic food is a watermelon.
She’s Monica’s best friend and when the gang was younger, she was sometimes shipped with Cascão / Smudge simply because they were the last duo not paired up but in their teens, both Maggy and Smudge are in their own, separate relationships with their respective partners.
Maggy is dating a baker which I love.
Cascão / Smudge
He’s known for being stinky and never showering, even as much as running away from any source of water since he hates getting wet.
He loves sports.
He’s mostly comedic relief but tends to be the more reasonable person between him and Cebolinha/Spring Onion.
In his teens, he does shower now but he still doesn’t like it.
He’s in a relationship with a girl called Maria Cassandra, "Cascuda" for short which I find funny because the pairing is basically Cascao and Cascuda - names which are really similar in Portuguese.
In my translation, I'll use Cassie as her nickname.
