Rukia stared at her phone, her brows furrowed at the strange message.

"Send a picture and my age to prove that I'm real? Is this a human ritual I'm unfamiliar with? Does my gigai not look real enough?" She murmured to herself.

"Hey Ichigo! What is the meaning of this human custom? Do I really need to provide a picture to prove my age? In human years?"

“Wait, what? Let me read that!” Ichigo barged into his room then snatched Rukia’s phone, grumbling after reading it. “Do not respond or put any thought to any messages that confuse you like that, they’re scams,” he told her with a sigh.

“It’s a way to steal your money or identity. I’ll call Urahara later about this, maybe he can upgrade your phone with better security so this doesn’t happen again. Jeez,” he added. Ichigo was worried though, if Rukia got a message like this already, there was a possibility that Renji and the other might have as well. Unfortunately they wouldn’t have someone like Ichigo next to them, and it’s not like he could just flash step to everyone to warn them either.

“Sorry, Rukia. I got careless…” Ichigo replied weakly, luckily he was being healed by Orihime. But if she and Chad did not show up when they did, his condition would have been a lot worse, from being attacked by a group of Quincy when he lost his resolve to fight.

“I just... I needed to hear Ishida’s reasoning, why he chose to side against us…” he admitted. Ichigo was desperate, he didn’t understand, and he didn’t believe the ‘because I am a Quincy’ nonsense, that did not stop him before, why now? Ichigo dusted himself off after he was healed completely, resolute to his plan of action.

“Ishida is our friend, and he’s always fought by our side, until now… I don’t know if his feelings have changed or not. That’s why we’re going after him, go hear what he has to say for himself. Then I’ll beat him up and drag him back with us, whether he likes it or not!”

Taking Frustrations [IchiRuki Divided]

“i can’t take this anymore.” ((~because I'm always in the mood for angst!))

“I know, Rukia. I can understand, this frustration…” Ichigo replied, trying to offer her some comfort. At least she was no alone in this feeling, everyone who survived the Quincy invasion would probably have some survivor’s guild, especially because of those who perished and sacrificed themselves.

His zanpakuto was broken, but at least he was still alive. Unlike when he rescued Rukia and later Orihime, it was a complete loss for him and them this time. The frustration of being unable to go after the enemy due to his own weakness, it was like when he first fought Grimmjow. After all this time even after regaining his Shinigami powers, some things did not change.

“But we’ll become stronger, like we have before. If they return, we will protect Soul Society better next time,” he spoke. Ichigo was trying to be more optimistic, naturally with the enemy retreating like they did, it bought them some time.

“Once you’ve recovered enough, let’s go out to get some fresh air, alright?” Ichigo forced a smile in a lousy attempt to pick up Rukia’s spirits, sometimes he wondered if it was worth trying. It was hard to hide things from her, Rukia could read his face like an open book, and could probably tell that there was more to his demeanour.

"Thanks, Rukia. This will work nicely with the strawberries and cream," Ichigo said towards Rukia giving him the chocolate. She had stayed with them more than long enough for him to trust her to find some in the kitchen when he asked earlier.

"Alright, we should be done here. Shall we try some?" he said with the strawberries and cream ready too that he prepared. Now they can just enjoy these snacks while they had a casual day in.

“Damn it Rukia, it’s already crowded enough with the rabbit I got you for your birthday! Now I got a clingy otter and you got another rabbit too, I swear it’s probably from the same anon person!” Ichigo growled in frustration with his otter still not wanting to let go of his arm, which meant he had to take the otter everywhere, at this rate they might as well start a mini or something.

“I don’t care if she likes me, and naming her Chappy will just-” he continued to ramble when to his surprise by some miracle, his otter finally let go of his arm to look at Chappy the rabbit curiously on his bed. “Well at least they’re bonding, and I get my arm back,” he admitted with a sigh of relief, finally able to stretch his arm out better.

His job to take care of me... so in other words, his duty.

Rukia turned her head slightly to the side, eyes glancing away and downward, masking the flash of hurt that passed through them. Did he not trust in her ability anymore? Did he consider her so weak that she needed looking after? Like a helpless pet?

Perhaps Rukia needed to remind him of her own stubbornness. After all, Rukia did have her pride. She set her jaw, letting ice flow into her reiatsu.

"I see. You may consider your duty complete. "

“That’s not what I meant Rukia and you know it,” Ichigo spoke with mild annoyance after he finished patching up Rukia’s wound. Ichigo having to save and heal her in such a way probably made her feel useless and a damsel again, so he had to take responsibility and clarify himself to make things right again.

“I guess I worded that badly, sorry. I take care of you like this because I want to, not out of a sense of obligation or anything. Getting help doesn’t mean you’re not strong enough to take care of yourself, it just makes you not perfect like everyone else is…” he tried to explain, putting a hand behind his head in thought. Jeez, she could be more prideful and stubborn than even Byakuya sometimes

“Thanks, Rukia...” Still he appreciated the effort, even though the wording was more confusing to him than deep, Ichigo still knew what she intended to say, to have her feelings reach him. “So let me do something for this ‘silly human kissing day’ too, heh!”

With that said, Ichigo pulled Rukia towards then and leaned in, to kiss her deep and passionately on the lips, even more so than usual to mark this International Kissing Day. “There, now we did our part for the day,” he spoke after their lips parted. His cheeks reddened at how he might have pushed for it more than he intended, he didn’t want it to end up getting him heated and almost breathless after like it just did, damn it.

“Well..” Rukia blushed slightly. “Your eyes, first and foremost. I love the way they shift and have such depth to them. They can be a soft warm honey brown and in an instant, shift to a dark ominous storm. Your smile. Like your eyes, your smile goes from a cocky smirk to a welcoming grin from ear to ear. Lastly, it’s your heart. The way you care so deeply and feel so intensely. It’s raw and real, not perfect or fake like others. I love that about you most of all.”

“Hm, you got really into it there, Rukia.” Ichigo commented, amused at first but his gaze changed to a fondness at her honesty,  “Thank you,” he spoke with such sincerity, glad she had at least three things that she loved about him.

“My turn, as long as you don’t think that I’m copying you, got it?” It was only fair Ichigo confess three things too, but on that condition, it was hard to tell if it was pure coincidence or they were mentally in sync again.

“Your eyes, you always had that caring sense of authority about you through them. When they get sharp with your words, they help push me forward when I need it most, but still with the gentle empathy, considering my own feelings and others as well. I hate it sometimes, but I can’t hide anything from you when our eyes meet, but I guess things are better that way.”

“Your smile, at times it pisses me off when I know you’re scheming or trying to get a reaction out of me about Chappy. But I know things are okay when you do smile, when I can be the reason for that through my words and actions, it puts me at ease, that I’m doing okay too, because we are.”

“Your heart, it brings me back to when we first met. It all started because you risked your life to save me and my family, after I interfered with your work too. You sacrificed yourself for me again when Soul Society took you back, you can’t blame me for trying to save you like I did. Getting lost in his words to make sure Rukia knew, he also reached a hand out to cup her cheek in affection. There was of course more, but those were the top three things about her that he loved. He couldn’t be more grateful enough for Rukia being in his life, and changing it for the better as well, their meeting was the start of him gaining the power to protect everyone he cared about, including her.
