Italia-Inghilterra: Finale Euro 2020

Gli Azzurri raggiungono la finale dove affrontano l’Inghilterra nella bolgia di Wembley con 60 mila spettatori che cantano il tormentone “It’s Coming Home”. Per i padroni di casa c'è già la presunzione di vittoria nonostante i 55 anni senza un trofeo. Le loro speranze galvanizzate dal gol di Shaw dopo appena 2 minuti e tutto sembra già scritto. La squadra inglese deve però fare i conti con un'Italia sicura di sé che riesce a mantenere la calma ("ma che calmi!" - cit. Florenzi) nonostante la doccia fredda del gol subito. Pian piano gli uomini di Mancini riprendono in mano la partita. Verratti cerca sempre il pallone e controlla 11% del possesso della partita intera con più tocchi/passaggi del complessivo centrocampo inglese. 

Chiesa sembra un indemoniato, terrorizzando gli avversari, lotta per ogni pallone, salta l’uomo e va vicino al gol con un tiro rasoterra.

 Il figlio d’arte continua nella ripresa dove dribbla praticamente tutta la difesa inglese e prova il tiro nell’angolino basso, ma Pickford fa una grande parata. 

Poi arriva il meritato pareggio; calcio d’angolo che Verratti colpisce di testa, altra grande parata di Pickford che la respinge sul palo, ma Bonucci si fa trovare pronto e spinge la palla in rete. 

L’Inghilterra raramente impenserisce la porta di Donnarumma e si schiera dietro il pallone, cercando di colpire in contropiede. Ma é l'Italia che va vicino al gol con una grande occasione per Berardi che di volo calcia sopra la traversa. Sempre l'Italia pericolosa alla fine dei supplementari, Emerson crossa per Bernardeschi che per un soffio non ci arriva; è l’ultima vera opportunità da gol dell partita. Nulla da fare, si va al dischetto. Berardi inizia la giostra dei calci di rigori con un tiro all’opposto del tuffo di Pickford. Pareggia Kane con potenza, poi sbaglia Belotti che prova a piazzare il pallone ma Pickford intuisce. Bel rigore di Maguire nel sette con l'esterno del piede e poi Bonucci segna nell'angolo dopo una mezza finta nella sua rincorsa. 2-2. Rashford si presenta al dischetto ma sbaglia, colpendo il palo e Bernardeschi riporta l’Italia in vantaggio con un tiro centrale. 

Arriva Sancho e prova anche lui a piazzare ma viene negato dal strepitoso Donnarumma.

Tocca a Jorginho di fare come contro la Spagna, ma Pickford ci mette una mano, la palla rimbalza sul palo e rientra nelle mani del portiere inglese. Ma i festeggiamenti inglesi durano poco, il gigantesco Donnarumma para ancora su Saka. 

Il portierone Azzurro ci mette qualche secondo per capire che ha regalato all’Italia il secondo campionato Europeo.

Trionfo meritatissimo per l’Italia, non solo per la prestazione in finale, me per il torneo complessivo. Gioco propositivo, ragazzi che si divertono dentro e fuori dal campo, con una voglia di combattere per i compagni. 

Sono tanti i motivi per cui gli azzurri hanno raccolto tifosi da tutto il mondo, italiani e stranieri, questo non può che renderci orgogliosi. Per gli inglesi, invece, il digiuno di 55 anni senza un trofeo continua, perche ancora pastasciutta devono mangiare. 

Italia-Inghilterra: Finale Euro 2020

The Azzurri qualify for their third Euro final from the last 6 editions. After the disappointments of 2000 and 2012, Italy must now overcome England and the 60 thousand spectators in Wembley chanting “It’s Coming Home”.

 Within England there was an air of presumption among pundits and fans, and after merely 2 minutes their assurances were galvanized by Luke Shaw’s goal at the far post. It appeared that everything was going to script, but England were up against an Italy team that was confident in itself and managed to maintain their calm despite the cold shower of conceding an early goal. Mancini’s men slowly regained control of the game and began to dictate the tempo. 

Verratti constantly made himself available for the ball as he controlled 11% of the entire game’s possession, collecting more touches and completed passes than England’s entire midfield. Chiesa was a man possessed, hellbent on terrorizing his opponents and fighting for every ball. After battling with Declan Rice, the Juventus winger manages to skip away even as the English midfielder kicks out at him and he’s low drive is just wide. 

The son of Enrico continued where he left off in the second half by practically dribbling the entire England backline up and down their own penalty area before his placed shot is brilliantly picked out of the bottom corner by Pickford - the Everton keeper pleads with his defenders to contain the Italian number 14.

The deserved equalizer finally arrives; Cristante flicks a corner kick on for Verratti (of all people) to header low into the bottom corner, another great save from Pickford who pushes it onto the post but Bonucci finds himself ready to deposit in goal.

England rarely trouble Donnarumma and look to hit Italy on the break by sitting back so as not to get exposed by the Azzurri’s possession play in midfield. 

But it’s Italy who go close again with Berardi volleying over the bar as Pickford rushes off his line to intercept. It’s still Italy who are dangerous in this tense encounter; right at the end of extra-time, Emerson crosses for Bernardeschi who’s a shoelace away from giving Italy the lead. It’s the last real goalscoring opportunity as the Euro 2020 final goes to penalties. Berardi get proceedings underway with a neatly taken penalty sending Pickford in the opposite direction. Kane levels the affair with power before Belotti, as opposed to his kick against Spain, goes for placement rather than power and sees his shot saved. Maguire takes out the goal camera with a thunderous penalty and Bonucci makes it 2-2 with a slight stall in his run-up and placed shot just beyond Pickford’s hand. Rashford steps up to the spot but sends his penalty onto the post after a hesitant run-up waiting for Donnarumma to dive. Bernardeschi puts Italy back in front with a centrally struck spot kick. Up comes Sancho who, like Belotti, goes for placement but is denied by a great Donnarumma save. 

It comes down to the penalty master, Jorginho, to do as he did against Spain, but Pickford pulls off another great save and for the second time in the game pushes the ball onto the post - this time it returns safely into his hands. But the English celebrations proved to be short-lived, the outstanding Donnarumma saving again on Saka. 

The Italian giant takes a few seconds to realize he’s just handed Italy their second ever European Championship.

Deserved triumph for Italy, not just for the performance in the final, but for the tournament as a whole. The Azzurri captured the hearts of many neutrals with their positive, attacking play and a united group of guys that enjoyed themselves on and off the pitch, with a desire to fight for their teammates and for the shirt.

There are many reasons why Italy won the hearts of fans all over the world, both Italian and foreign, and as fans this can only make us proud. For England however, the 55 year wait without a trophy continues, obviously because they still need to eat more pastasciutta.
