The Second Wind by Bradley Mathis, pages 51, 52-53
Several cars were parked along the roadside as another couple walked up to the small table that was set back in the shade of a blooming desert mesquite tree. The early spring rains along with warm daytime temperatures around the New River area had turned the hillsides into an ocean of green. This was accented with multitudes of yellow and orange wildflowers for as far as could be seen. Almost every plant had some kind of a blossom. It was actually one of the most colorful springtimes many of my neighbors could recall.
I was a bit choked up as I gazed around, taking in all of the lush greenery of my surroundings. Suddenly, some unexpected tears came to my eyes as I pulled a handkerchief from my shirt pocket. Aaaccchhhhooooo! Aaacccchhhhhoooo!
"Bless you," the lady said as her and her husband stopped in front of the table. "All the pollen in the air has everybody sneezing, doesn't it?"
"It sure does," I replied, wiping my itchy, watering eyes and runny nose.
"So what's with the sign out there by the road that says 'Free Dandelion Soup'?" the gentleman asked as he pointed to the sign I had placed there a day earlier.
It must have been that rainfall and the warm sunny days hand in hand that somehow, without warning, transformed those little baby sprouts into six-inch-high leafy green plants that had suddenly taken over every single square inch of available ground.
"Wow, I'm really going to need to get started on some weed control this weekend," I said to myself that following Monday morning as I hopped in the truck and left for work.
It is so incredible how quickly a human child grows up. It seems that years of watching an infant grow into a teenager, then on into adulthood can pass by in the wink of an eye. Well, that's my best comparison as to what happened that week with all of those dandelion weeds. It seemed that in a matter of days, the millions of dandelion sprouts had all grown up and turned into mature adult plants now blooming with yellow flowers and launching a full-blown pollen attack on my sinuses.
"This is war! Aunt Charlene, would you... aaaaacchhhoooo... would you bring my machete to me... aaaaccccchhhoooo... please!" I yelled from my truck as I parked in the driveway that Friday afternoon. "It looks like a tropical rain forest out here in the middle of all these dandelions, and I need to clear a path to the back door. Aaaaccccchhhhooooo!"
I looked up at the middle-aged man and his wife who were standing in front of the table, waiting for the answer about the sign.
"Well, see these large baskets over here? All you need to do is go pick enough of those dandelion weeds to fill a basket. When you bring back a basket filled up, you get a free jar full of my aunt Charlene's delicious dandelion soup. The boundary is from this fence line here to that dirt road over there."
"Yes, I see. Looks like there are several people out there picking those dandelions already," he said as he looked back across the property with a hand over his eyes like a sun visor.
"They sure are. Aaaaacccchhhoooo. A lot of people around here really like that soup." I replied. "Those dandelions are going fast, but there's still a lot of them out there. Aaaaaaacccccchhhhoooooo!" (sniffle sniffle)
"Bless you... If we pick two basketfuls, can we get two jars of the soup?" the lady asked.
"Sure," I said "You get a jar for every full basket you pick."
The couple took two of the baskets and wandered over alongside of the others who were on the property already picking away at the dandelions. Aunt Charlene had been in the kitchen cooking away, making another pot of her dandelion soup, which was quickly becoming famous around the whole town of New River.
The next few days were filled with weed pulling, soup cooking, several hundred sneezes, burning, itchy eyes, and bug bites.

Matt writes: Just because you're stuck at home answering the door for trick-or-treaters on Halloween doesn't mean you can't have a delightfully spooky evening yourself. Two ten-hour programs ripe for seasonal binging recently premiered on Netflix and received enthusiastic reviews at RogerEbert.com. Mike Flanagan's limited series "The Haunting of Hill House," reviewed here by Brian Tallerico, is a genuinely unnerving, often brilliant reimagining of Shirley Jackson's classic novel about ominous ghosts, mental illness and frayed familial bonds. The other must-see show is "Riverdale" creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," a marvelously acted, richly provocative new vehicle for the supernaturally inclined Archie Comics heroine, played by a perfectly cast Kiernan Shipka. In my review of the first season, I explore how Osgood Perkins' masterful debut feature, "The Blackcoat's Daughter" (starring Shipka), served as a major influence on Aguirre-Sacasa, and could serve as ideal Halloween programming itself (check out the trailer embedded below...)
