Their interaction with Owen left them weak and in their feelings. Eyes red from crying and steps quick, Monique had made their way to the garage. Their plan was to leave campus and go to Roseville, to either drive around the small town or go to some disgusting fast food joint alone. Anything to leave Gallagher and away from him. But their plan was put to a halt as their body collided with another. “Watch where you’re going.”

“Can I be honest with you?” They said, speaking out loud to the first person near them. “I’m not a fan of wearing heels, they’re truly the bane of my existence.” It was why they owned more sneakers than heels.

Monique was growing tired and didn’t see a reason to stay any longer. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, from their friends to their cousins, each person with their respective group or partner. It made them feel sick and jealous. Though, they’ll never tell someone that. At first, they could only hear the sounds of their own heels clicking across the floor of the hallway. The sound pleasing in the beginning until it mixed and mingled with the sounds of another from behind them. Turning around with curiosity in their eyes, Monique was met with the face of the one person they didn’t want to see. “Oh,” they said. “It’s you. Leaving already?”

Monique’s focus was entirely on their laptop, replying to whatever emails were in their school inbox before the feeling of eyes on them. Groaning and pinching their nose, Monique looked up at the two. “What?”

“Owen?” Their voice was soft and so was their knocking. Even if Cole was inside, there was no way for him to hear either. Monique just felt odd for showing up like this, unannounced and during a time like this. But he would appreciate this, they reasoned with themself, I’m sure that he doesn’t want to be alone right now. Or at least they hoped so. Another knock, this time louder. “Owen, it’s Monique. Are you in there?”

“Nice place you got here.” It wasn’t nice, it looked crampy and shitty. But Monique didn’t feel bad, for them and especially not for him. “It suits you, really.”

This was too much, even for Monique. They always prided on themselves for being strong, put together, and not easily phased by anything. But this... this year, this semester was getting to them. And they were sure that it just wasn’t them that it was getting to. Eyes fell on Kassandra, their old friend, someone who went through the hell known as last year. I feel for her, they thought to themselves, striding over to the other. “Happy that you’re a fourth year?” Monique was, though, this was their second attempt at this.
