Sonia/Sofia as the ever-changing empty waiting woman who seems to have little agency of her own is such a deeply compelling figure though I’m not sure in the way that Platanov intended.
She isn’t really a person. She isn’t allowed to be, just as none of the women in this story are allowed to be people. They are barely allowed to be proper Communists or Bourgeois. The men are communists and bourgeois and proletariat and the women are just their wives, mothers, lovers who inherit those titles by extension. Every woman in the book is a symbol while the men are characters.

“He had suddenly felt like giving Sasha a picture of Rosa- maybe he too would then start to love her.” Platanov what did you mean by this?
