What is the relation between WiFi6 and 5G technology?
First of all wifi 6 is the latest WiFi technology boasting, unsurprisingly, faster speeds for wifi networks. And 5G is the latest cellular technology doing the same for mobile networks.
There is no direct relation between wifi 6 and 5G. You can say that both are wireless technologies. In that they have a similarity. Even then 5G is a mid range cellular technology aimed at mobile connectivity where as WiFi6 is a short range wireless local area network.
Indirectly both 5G and wifi internet data depends upon the undersea network backbone. While 5G distributes that network data to 5G enabled devices, wifi distributes that data to wifi enabled devices. But both need the internet backbone to work. It just happens to be the case that nearly all 5G devices are capable of wifi access but not all Wifi devices are capable of 5G access.
Whether the internet access is through 5G or through Wifi they are still going to use the infrastructure laid down by mobile companies. And this presents a unique opportunity for Mobile network operators.
As a cellular technology 5G works on certain assigned frequencies. Many of these frequencies are shared by other competing technologies like 4g/3G. It is extremely difficult to use the sparse bandwidth available to serve all the cellular standards at once while at the same time trying to bring something new.
This presents a problem. The devices that use “legacy standards” are large in number and still functioning well. We can’t simply turn off the network for them just so we can get on with deploying a newer and faster cellular network.
To overcome this barrier the proposed solution is to open up new frequencies that can be utilized by 5G without interfering with other deployments. But even then problems remain. To access a 5G network you need new mobile devices. Are people going to buy a new device simply because its 5G compatible? Maybe but certainly not if the network itself is spotty. And the deployment of 5g networks can’t be improved unless their is more demand from the users. How to break away from this viscous circle?
Simply setting up a 5G cell tower is not going to magically make all the data demands go away. More and more cell towers will need to be added to accommodate the ever increasing number of internet connected devices. That puts a huge load on cellular towers.
And to reduce the load on the 5g cellular network its expected, at least in the short term, that much of the data will be offloaded to wifi. That is in major part due to the fact that Wifi is compatible with billions of devices today. Nearly every digital device can work with wifi.
According to a report by Cisco [1] 54% of the mobile data was offloaded to wifi in 2017. This number is projected to grow to 59% by 2021. In other words its is estimated that more than half of total mobile data will be distributed by wifi. This number is estimated to be as high as 70% in case of 5G.
To enable a seamless offloading between different types of wireless networks like 5G and wifi 6 a new protocol called 802.11u or hotspot 2.0 [2] has been created. With this protocol a mobile device will be able to roam between wifi networks just like they can do in cellular networks. Further the protocol allows for seamless authentication between wifi and cellular networks.
As we move towards more dense small cell deployments its looking as there is not going to be a single dominant communication standard rather a mixed of wired, open wireless and mobile networks to fulfill the data needs of customer. To this end 5G has made a provision for WiFi cellular convergence [4] hoping that the cost of deployment and operation of 5G cellular networks can be reduced by using the strength of simplicity and performance of WiFi networks.
Big corporations like Facebook have even started an express wifi program partnering with several Mobile network operators as well as Internet service providers to build wifi access points around the world[3] to improve the connectivity for people. Facebook is not the only one. Google and Microsoft have entered into connectivity business as well.
In the end it is important to understand that Mobile network operators and Internet service providers are in the business of selling data access. 5G and WiFi both have certain strengths and weaknesses when it comes to distribution of data. And networks operators are looking to use the strengths of diverse communication protocols in different situations to provide the best possible data experience for the users.
