ST. PAUL, Minn. — The St. Paul Fire Department is investigating a suspected case of arson at an Islamic center early Wednesday.
Few details were initially available, but the fire is said to have happened at Tawhid Islamic Center of Minnesota, which is on the 400 block of Dale Street. Crews responded at about 8:45 a.m. on a report of flames coming from the building.
St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter called out this latest attack on a place of worship.
“I’m disgusted,” Carter said. …
Police officials saying they will increase patrols at mosques across the city, and Carter promised he’ll lobby to raise funds for more security cameras.
“If you come anywhere near a mosque in St. Paul, be prepared to say cheese, because you will be on camera, and we will be able to see you,” Carter said.
We’re deeply troubled by the suspected arson at the Tawhid Islamic Center. This is the sixth attack on a MN mosque this year, and it’s an attack on our values of unity, respect, and freedom. To our Muslim community: we are with you and will support you at every step #NoToHate pic.twitter.com/CFJoJeyFbF

… Rep. Samakab Hussein, whose district houses the center, issued the following statement:
“I am frustrated that sacred spaces Minnesotans use to practice religion are being violently attacked. We simply cannot normalize these incidents of hate. I urge all Minnesotans to come together in solidarity to combat these atrocious actions and uplift our Muslim community. The freedom of religion is essential to a free and democratic society. It allows people to practice their faith without fear of persecution or discrimination. It also allows people to explore different faiths and to learn about different cultures.
“I call on all Americans to join us in condemning these attacks and in defending the freedom of religion. We also call on law enforcement to do everything in their power to bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice.”

Thanks to the kind consideration of the @RondaCommunityLibrary #staff and Ms. Charisma Lee, Youth Services Librarian, in particular, the 6th graders from @StPaulPublicSchools were introduced to Dr. Bruce Corrie, Director, of the @CityofSaintPaul #Department of #Planning & #Economic #Development. These young lions confidently presented their plan to Dr. Corrie.
Dr. Corrie shared how the City is interested in business ventures like this youth-led & managed 1st #Annual @JKMovement #BBQ #Cook-Off #Festival. In fact, Dr. Corrie invited the 6th Grade entrepreneurs to come to his department meeting and present to his staff. Hopefully, the City will assist these business champions in launching their newly formed opportunity. We would be so pleased if The @PioneerPress, The @startribune, and @Upsizemag would consider interviewing them and giving them some encouragement, please?

The eyes of the world were focused on one raccoon.
On Tuesday, thousands of people from around the world watched as a raccoon clung to the side of a skyscraper in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. By Wednesday morning, the internet breathed a collective sigh of relief as the raccoon was safely captured.
The adventure started on Tuesday at about 11 a.m. when downtown workers spotted the raccoon on a building ledge, a few stories above street level. But then the raccoon decided to up the ante. He leapt across to a nearby skyscraper, the UBS Tower, and began his nail-biting ascent.
He is on the ledge on our floor. He seems to be doing well. We’ve been told that the building has live traps on the roof and are trying to get him to go up there. We all just have to keep our fingers crossed.. #mprraccoon pic.twitter.com/HY1PkuFKz0

The world took notice.
An eight-hour livestream of the raccoon began. Workers abandoned their work; students abandoned their studies. The internet was captivated by the raccoon’s perilous scurry up and down the side of the tower.
Those inside the building kept the world updated as the raccoon climbed.

Some compared the raccoon’s daring adventure to “Mission Impossible.” The tricky part about that this operation was that the building’s windows do not open. There was no way of helping the raccoon from inside. If he wanted to get to safety, he had to scale the side of the building up to the roof.
What you've all been waiting for… #MissionImpossible #MPRraccoon

By Tuesday evening, the raccoon had made it up to the building’s 17th floor. He stopped on a window ledge on the 22nd floor to take a rest. Rome was not built in a day and there is no shame in taking a break while completing an arduous journey.
Most recent picturesI left about 25 minutes ago the poor little guy was still there.People have asked and no the windows do not open.We all have to keep our fingers crossed and pray that the little guy makes it the rest of the way to safety food and water. pic.twitter.com/iTmg4ZMXzW

But before long, he was back at it. The mayor of St. Paul was even in on the raccoon’s rescue.
Even wild animals know @cityofsaintpaul is a great place to reach for higher heights. We’re working with staff & building owner to find a way to help #MPRraccoon without further endangering it or staff by scaring or making it feel threatened.
— Mayor Melvin Carter (@MayorCarter_) June 12, 2018
At the top of the building, wildlife control had placed traps with live food. If the raccoon was able to shimmy its way to safety, he would be rewarded with cat food.

At about 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, he did it.

The skyscraper’s Twitter account announced that the raccoon had been captured and wildlife control was taking him onwards to safety. The internet rejoiced.
But what about the raccoon inspired fervor in so many netizens? It could be his pluck or his determination. But most likely it’s his improbable success in the face of harsh adversity. In a divided world, the courage of one small procyon brought the world together.
A FREAKING WARRIOR

The most powerful image of all.
If this raccoon can make it to the top of this building after days without food and water, you too can make your dreams come true. Let #mprraccoon inspire us all to live our best lives. pic.twitter.com/tZTyFjzhka

We are ever so proud of @JKMovement #BBQ #Business #Leaders’ contribution to the meeting on Thursday, November 29th at the @RondoLibrary. They did a splendid job presenting to @NoraRiemenschneider, #EconomicDevelopmentProgramCoordinator for the @CityofSaintPaul and @SteveHeckler, #ExecutiveDirector of @TwinCitiesJazzFestival and board member of the @CulturalSTAR to grants and loans for cultural projects. Much was shared at the meeting. The @JKMovement #Leaders need to work on better understanding how BBQ is and can be presented as an art form. The feedback from the @CulturalSTAR #Program #Leaders benefits the team greatly. Here are two key learnings that came from the @SaintPaulLeaders.
· BBQ Styles – They are asking that the team learn what makes each barbecue style special and therefore a “culinary art”. This explanation must show that beyond a doubt #barbecuing is an art. Mac, Shamayah, Jimmy, Loha, and Tacquorous (TQ), did a great job of speaking to the BBQ ingredients. We will need to do a stronger job of convincing people that your #barbecue ribs, chicken, hot dogs, etc. are an fine art. The team must show that producing food of this source will have an emotional impact that is compelling to viewers.
· BBQ Grills – @Ms.Riemenschneider and @Mr.Heckler heard the special artistry associated with making grills. They will only consider providing a grant if the team can prove beyond a doubt that BBQing (cooking and grill design) is truly an art form.
