"Susa, gate of Italy" Follow: @archivoltogallery The origins of Susa, "Gate of Italy" fade away in history. In 500 b.C., when cities like Aosta and Turin had not been founded yet, in Susa there was a Celtic society, perfectly organised by the Druids. Difficult to establish the era in which the city was inhabited for the first time. Certainly among them there were the Ligurians and later came the Celts (about 500 BC) that merged with the first populations. Then came the Romans led by Julius Caesar who established with Donno, king of Susa valleys, an alliance pact, so as to ensure a safe passage to Gaul to troops and goods from the passes of the nearby Colle Clapier and of the farthest Colle del Monginevro. Good relations continued for a long time, enshrined in the construction of the Augustus arch. The city was then called Segusium and was the capital of the Cozii Kingdom, in the province called the Cozie Alps. Situated in a strategical position on the ways which linked North Europe to Rome, in the middle of 'Susa valley', next Montcenis pass, Col Clapiè pass, Colle delle Finestre pass, Monginevro pass and now also Tunnel del Frejus Susa reached its maximum splendour during the Roman Empire.
