I've finally finished the bulk of my unpacking from the UK. I have a bag with the stuff that was in my suitcase on the way home, but not on the way there. Mostly stuff my friend in London has been saving for me, to give me all at once in person and avoid shipping costs. Things he picked up for me so he could get them signed by people in England, or things I ordered online to his place to avoid paying shipping to Canada.
And there were a few things he's just grabbed for me from events he attended. For example, I now have to decide which bit of my wall I want to dedicate to flyers he got from Edinburgh 2023, of some of my favourite acts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Along, of course, with the flyer I took myself from Edinburgh 2024, for the express purpose of putting it on my wall:
Tumblr media
I also got some new books, such as: I Noticed That My Empathetic, Intellectual, Thoughtful, and Compassionate Approach To Things That Came Through In My Work Was Nourishing Some People's Deeply Flagging Faith In Humanity, and I Can't Just Let People Have Nice Things So Here's the Story of How I Cheated on My Wife:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ordered a signed copy (to London, to save on shipping costs, so that's why I only got it now), and I was allowed to say how I want him to dedicate the signature, so I said I'm going to London and Edinburgh next year, what should I do there? That was his advice. I tried to follow it, went to Scott's Monument on my last day there. But there were signs that said climbing it was temporarily closed, so I just sat down against it and stared at the castle for a while instead.
There was also this, where Tim Key was signing books at a launch event, and I asked my friend to get me a copy and have Tim sign it with his advice about what I should do during a trip to London and Edinburgh:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did go to Mosque Kitchen, repeatedly, in multiple locations, and it was an excellent meal every time. Score one point to Tim Key over Mark Watson, there. Two points if you include the fact that he's not cheated on his wife (or if he has, he's done a much better job of keeping it a secret, not even revealing that he had a wife at all).
There's also this, which was a surprise, as those other books I requested and paid for, but this one apparently came free with something else so got thrown in, and I'm looking forward to going through it:
Tumblr media
Also an Edinburgh Fringe 2024 book, which I have to figure out a place for, because that is a really lovely keepsake - programme from the first time I attended that festival - but it is surprisingly thick. I guess not surprising if you think about how many shows are on, but I hadn't thought of that, and was surprised by the size of this:
Tumblr media
And then something that I definitely requested, and was so excited when he sent me a picture of the signature, even more excited to finally have it in my hands:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's my favourite Gavin Osborn album, signed for me after a Union Chapel gig with Kitson, what an excellent bit of memorabilia. Up there, of course, with the DVD that I posted the other day but it's worth posting again:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Terrible movie from 2001 in which Daniel Kitson appeared in three scenes, for 36 seconds in total, signed by Kitson in spring 2024. Because I told my friend that he should go up to Daniel Kitson after a gig and ask him to sign the DVD of the terrible movie in which he appeared very briefly in 2001, preferably to sign it with his catchphrase from the movie, which was "Brace yourselves!" To be clear, I was obviously joking when I said my friend should do that. But he did it anyway. And had it signed with my name on it (I don't usually put my real name on Tumblr, my name has appeared multiple times in this post, it's one of the most common first names in the world, I figure I'm probably safe).
I've got my new stuff added to my collection that includes, from top to bottom in this picture: Grace Petrie's 2021 album (also signed to me, when I saw her live last year), signed Gavin Osborn CD, Daniel Kitson's Shenaniganagain CD, the Lucksmiths album from 2006 where Kitson wrote the liner notes, DVD from 2001 where Kitson briefly appeared as a bus driver, John Oliver's stand-up DVD from 2008, Conchords, In the Loop, Thick of It, you get to some Monty Python movies just out of frame:
Tumblr media
I also picked up a couple of vinyl records that I've ordered in the last year, but had them sent to London to save on shipping costs:
Tumblr media
That's Kitson's Christmas show, and John Kearns' stand-up show Double Take And Fade Away. Both of which of course came with digital downloads, which I used ages ago so I've already heard those shows (I mean, the Kitson show I'd heard long before since it was on his website), and greatly enjoyed both. But I like that I have the physical albums now. I have to pick up some vinyl record-sized frames so I can put them on my wall. When I do that, I'll pick up an extra one for the Bugle vinyl record, whenever it arrives, which was supposed to be months ago and an email today said will be a while yet.
Tumblr media
That last thing isn't comedy, it's a book I bought at a really cool bookstore where I wanted to buy something just because the store was so cool, but I figured if I buy a new book for myself it won't get read (I have enough to be getting on with, reading-wise, what with the books by 2/3 of No More Jockeys and the Richard Herring), so I bought a beautifully-illustrated children's book to donate to where I work. Which seems sort of selfless, but like I said I did want to buy something from that store just for the experience of buying something in such a cool place, and in the centre where I work, I've read every book they have to the kids I work with 100 times, so it'll be nice for me as much as anyone else to have a new one to read.
All right, that's what I've got. I believe this post is as close as I'll come to an unboxing video. Unboxing the bag in my suitcase full of things I did not have with me when I left for the UK. Now I just need to find the right wall space and shelf space.

Smile Direct Club customers 'gutted' and 'left in lurch'
Chantelle Jones
By Lora Jones
Business reporter, BBC News
Customers of Smile Direct Club have told the BBC how they feel “left in the lurch”, “outraged” and “gutted” after the remote dentistry firm shut down.
Chantelle Jones, 32, paid a total of £1,800 to straighten her teeth before her wedding next year. While her top teeth had aligned, she was waiting for new moulds for her bottom teeth.
“I’m not sure if I’m going to get any money back,” she said.
Dentists have also expressed “great concern” for stranded patients.
Late on Friday, it emerged that a last-minute rescue attempt for Smile Direct Club had failed as the company was weighed down by debt.
“I found out in a TikTok video that they’d gone bankrupt. I think it’s an absolute disgrace how they have treated customers,” says Chantelle from Churchdown in Gloucestershire.
“The worst thing about it is… the app has not closed down but when I click on the chat button it’s not there. They seem completely uncontactable and I’m just left in the lurch.”
Oliver, a photographer from Kent, spent £799 with Smile Direct Club just under two weeks ago in the hope of straightening his smile.
“I’m gutted. It’s a fair chunk of money and I feel a bit numb about it really,” he says.
Oliver
Founded in 2014, the orthodontics company styled itself as a disruptor to the “bricks-and-mortar” dental industry.
In traditional dentistry, “train-track” braces and clear aligners are fitted by dentists and orthodontists themselves, or a trained orthodontic therapist, after an in-person consultation.
Many customers were drawn to US-based Smile Direct Club because of lower prices, and the fact that they typically take the moulds for their aligners themselves at home.
The Nashville-based firm debuted on the Nasdaq stock exchange in 2019 and it was once valued at about $8.9bn (£7bn).
But it failed to turn a profit and in late September the firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US. At the time it had nearly $900m worth of debt, according to Fortune magazine.
And late on Friday the firm said it had made the “incredibly difficult decision to wind down its global operations”.
It said that any orders that have not yet been made or shipped have been cancelled, and apologised for any inconvenience caused. It recommended that if customers in the US, UK and elsewhere want to carry on with their treatment, they should get in touch with a local dentist.
There would be more information on refunds, it said, as the bankruptcy process determines next steps.
It has angered some customers, however, by saying that the “lifetime smile guarantee” it previously offered was no longer valid, while those with payment plans set up are expected to continue making payments.
Smile Direct Club dentistry firm shuts down
Dentists warn of damage from braces ordered online
Teah from the West Midlands told the BBC that she had paid a £135 deposit for her aligners about two weeks ago.
The treatment, which typically takes about four to six months, cost £1,739, which Teah was planning to pay back using the Smile Direct Club payment plan.
She says she feels “outraged and anxious” about the fact she is still being asked to make payments.
“It is not right that I [am expected to] pay such a large sum of money even though I didn’t receive any treatment or merchandise from them.”
The BBC has contacted Smile Direct Club for comment on Chantelle, Oliver and Teah’s experiences.
What should Smile Direct Club customers do?
Lisa Webb, consumer law expert at the organisation Which?, said that many customers would feel “adrift” due to the company going bust.
She pointed out that where refunds would be available, they will be handed by liquidators. “But customers will be at the back of a long queue of creditors so this is unlikely to amount to much, if anything at all,” she said.
She recommended that anyone in the UK who is still waiting for products, and has not had their order cancelled and paid via credit card, could also try to claim their money back via Section 75 under the Consumer Credit Act.
Dental bodies have also spoken out after the firm’s collapse.
The British Dental Association (BDA) said that it had raised concerns about the company offering plastic aligners remotely and the potential risk of misdiagnosis with regulators.
“Dentists are left to pick up the pieces when these providers offer wholly inappropriate treatment,” said BDA chair Eddie Crouch.
“It shouldn’t take a bankruptcy to protect patients from harm. It requires decent laws and effective regulation.”
Getty Images
And Anjli Patel of the British Orthodontic Society suggested that the firm was avoiding responsibility for customers’ treatment in a way that was “nothing short of scandalous”.
It is calling on watchdogs in the UK to ensure any firm providing orthodontics directly to patients in the UK are held to high standards.
Smile Direct Club vigorously defended its practices throughout and said consistently that customers’ treatments were reviewed by licensed professionals, while risks were listed as well.
In the statement on its website, the company said that it had “improved more than two million smiles and lives”.
But that is no consolation to those who now find themselves out of pocket with incomplete treatment.
Both Chantelle and Oliver regret being attracted by Smile Direct Club’s cheaper prices.
“I should have gone to my own dentist. Although it was more than double the amount of money – I was quoted £4,500 – I would have rather paid that looking back in hindsight,” says Chantelle.
Neither are hopeful of getting their retainers or their money back.
“I went cheap, and the whole phrase ‘buy cheap buy twice’ comes to mind,” says Oliver, adding that he was asking his bank for help and wanted to “fight his corner”.

Does Invisalign Straighten Teeth for Any Age?
A smile is a universal language that transcends age and time. Whether you're a teenager seeking to enhance your confidence or an adult yearning for that picture-perfect smile, the desire for straight teeth knows no boundaries. In the United Kingdom, Invisalign has become a household name when it comes to discreet teeth straightening. But does Invisalign straighten teeth for any age? In this blog, we delve into the world of Invisalign and explore how it caters to the diverse age groups seeking orthodontic solutions in the UK.
Invisalign: A Modern Approach to Teeth Straightening
Invisalign is a revolutionary orthodontic treatment that has transformed the way people think about teeth straightening. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually shift your teeth into their desired position. These aligners are custom-made for each patient, making the treatment not only effective but also discreet.
Now, let's address the question on everyone's mind: can Invisalign straighten teeth for any age?
Invisalign for Teenagers
Adolescence is a time of rapid growth and development, making it an ideal phase for orthodontic intervention. Invisalign for teenagers is an excellent choice, provided they are committed to wearing the aligners as recommended. The aligners are virtually invisible, which helps teenagers feel more confident and less self-conscious about their orthodontic treatment. Invisalign for teens comes with features like compliance indicators, which help parents and orthodontists ensure that the aligners are worn for the recommended duration.
Invisalign for Adults
The UK has seen a surge in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment in recent years. Invisalign for adults is a fantastic option because it aligns perfectly with their lifestyles. The discreet nature of the aligners allows adults to straighten their teeth without drawing undue attention. This is particularly appealing to professionals who need to maintain a polished appearance. Invisalign accommodates adult responsibilities by requiring fewer dental visits compared to traditional braces.
Invisalign for Seniors
But what about seniors? The good news is that Invisalign is not limited to teenagers and adults. It is indeed suitable for many seniors who wish to correct their smiles. Age should not be a barrier to achieving a beautiful smile. However, it's crucial to have a thorough discussion with an experienced Invisalign provider to determine if Invisalign is the right option for you, as there may be certain dental and health factors that need to be considered in older age.
Advantages of Invisalign for All Ages
Comfort: Invisalign aligners are smooth and comfortable to wear, unlike the brackets and wires of traditional braces.
Aesthetics: Invisalign is virtually invisible, making it an appealing choice for anyone who doesn't want their orthodontic treatment to be obvious.
Removability: The aligners can be removed for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene, ensuring a better overall dental experience.
Convenience: Invisalign requires fewer dental appointments compared to traditional braces, fitting well into busy schedules.
Predictable Results: Invisalign's digital technology allows for precise treatment planning, ensuring predictable results.
How Much Is Invisalign?
The cost of Invisalign treatment in the UK can vary depending on several factors, including the complexity of the case and the region where you receive treatment. On average, Invisalign treatment can range from £2,500 to £5,500. While this cost may seem higher than traditional braces, many patients find the investment worthwhile due to the added benefits of Invisalign's comfort, aesthetics, and convenience.
Conclusion
Invisalign is a versatile orthodontic solution that can indeed straighten teeth for people of various ages in the UK. It offers a discreet and convenient approach to achieving a beautiful smile, regardless of your age. However, it's crucial to consult with an experienced Invisalign provider to determine if it's the right option for your specific needs and circumstances. And when you consider the question, "How much is Invisalign?" remember that the investment in your smile is an investment in your confidence and oral health.

Invisalign: A Comprehensive Guide to Straightening Your Smile.
A beautiful, straight smile can boost confidence and improve oral health. Invisalign has become a popular alternative to traditional braces for individuals seeking discreet and convenient treatment. This blog post will explore why we chose Invisalign and delve into Invisalign's price UK.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that changes teeth' position to give you your desired smile. It uses clear, removable aligners. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, providing discreet treatment.
Invisalign treatment
The Invisalign treatment involves:
Consultation: Visit a qualified Invisalign provider for an initial consultation. The dentist or orthodontist will evaluate your dental condition, discuss treatment goals, and determine if Invisalign suits you.
If you are in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire or Bedfordshire, you can visit Belur Orthodontics for a holistic treatment. With over 18 years of experience and face-driven Orthodontics, they can help you get the smile of your dreams.
Treatment Plan: If the practitioner deems Invisalign suitable, they will take a digital scan or impression of your teeth. Using specialized software, they will create a custom treatment plan, showing the step-by-step movement of your teeth during the treatment.
Tumblr media
Aligner Fitting: Once your treatment plan is finalized, you will receive a series of aligners to be worn sequentially. You need to wear each aligner for about 1-2 weeks. They gradually move your teeth into the desired position.
Progress Checkups: Regular checkup appointments (every 6-8 weeks) will be scheduled to monitor your progress, provide new aligners, and address any concerns.
Why Use Invisalign?
There are several reasons why Invisalign is a popular choice for orthodontic treatment:
Invisalign aligners straighten your teeth discreetly. This way, you do not feel self-conscious about your appearance.
Invisalign aligners are made of smooth plastic, ensuring a comfortable fit. Additionally, the aligners are removable, allowing you to eat, drink, brush, and floss quickly.
Invisalign utilizes advanced technology to create a personalized treatment plan based on your dental needs. They ensure effective and targeted tooth movement.
Factors that Determine Invisalign Price
Several factors contribute to the overall Invisalign Price UK. Understanding these factors can provide insight into why prices may vary:
1. Complexity of the Case
The complexity of your dental condition plays a significant role in determining the price of Invisalign. Cases requiring minor adjustments may be less expensive than those requiring extensive orthodontic corrections. More severe dental issues, such as significant misalignment or bite problems, may require additional treatment time and materials, thus increasing the overall cost.
Tumblr media
2. Treatment Duration
The duration of your Invisalign treatment affects the price. The longer the treatment period required to achieve the desired results, the higher the cost. Shorter treatments are less expensive as they involve fewer aligners and follow-up appointments.
3. Geographic Location
Dental practice location and local market dynamics can affect the Invisalign price. Practices in metropolitan areas or regions with a higher cost of living may have slightly higher treatment fees than in rural areas.
4. Dentist's Expertise
The level of experience and expertise of the dentist or orthodontist administering the Invisalign treatment can impact the cost. Highly skilled orthodontics professionals may charge more for their services due to their expertise and reputation.
5. Additional Treatments
Additional dental treatments, such as extractions, dental restorations, or jaw realignment, may be necessary before or during Invisalign treatment. These supplementary procedures can add to the overall cost of the treatment.
Invisalign Price UK
The cost of Invisalign treatment in the UK can vary depending on the abovementioned factors. On average, Invisalign price in the UK falls between £2,500 and £5,500. However, it's important to note that this range is an estimate, and the actual cost may differ based on individual circumstances.
For an accurate estimate, you should consult a qualified Invisalign provider who will assess your specific needs and provide a personalized treatment plan with detailed pricing information.
Affording Invisalign Treatment
Invisalign cost may be high. Many dental practices offer various payment options to make it more accessible.
Belur Orthodontics in Buckinghamshire, UK, offers several payment options, including monthly payments, interest-free payments over 12-24 months, family discounts etc.
It is also worth exploring dental insurance coverage to determine if Invisalign treatment is included or if any applicable reimbursements or discounts are available.
Conclusion
When considering orthodontic treatment, you must explore various options and consult a qualified dentist or orthodontist to determine the best choice for your specific dental needs and preferences. Invisalign is a popular and effective option, offering discretion, comfort, and customization. However, alternatives such as traditional braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, transparent aligner systems, and retainers can also provide excellent results. The cost, treatment duration and desired outcome are crucial factors when choosing the proper orthodontic treatment for a straighter and healthier smile.

What is Invisalign Cost in Newcastle?
Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments in the world, and it’s no wonder why. It’s a non-invasive treatment that can help you straighten your teeth in just a few short visits. But like with any major dental procedure, there are costs associated with it. So what are the Invisalign Newcastle costs? In this article, we will break down the cost of Invisalign treatment and detail everything you need to know about how much it will cost you in Newcastle. Armed with this information, you can make an informed decision about whether or not Invisalign is right for you.
Tumblr media
What is Invisalign and what does it do?
Invisalign is a clear, custom-made dental appliance that is used to straighten teeth. It consists of two clear plastic brackets that are fitted over the front and back teeth, with movable wires running between them. The brackets move along the teeth as you eat and breathe, gradually adjusting your smile until it's straight.
The main advantage of Invisalign over traditional braces is that it's invisible. This means that you can continue to eat and drink normally while wearing the braces, which is great if you have a fear of dentists or if your teeth are already crooked.
