Paradigm shift is a term that originated in science, and refers to a fundamental change in the understanding of the underlying assumptions, practices and methodology of a given framework.

It was coined by American physicist and philosopher Thomas Kuhn in his The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, published in 1962, and has since been adopted by business, popular culture and even sports to simply mean a fundamental shift in the way we understand how things work.

To understand how the term migrated over, it’s important to understand what is meant by a paradigm, often misused as and confused with “paragon,” which means “a model of excellence or perfection.” Strictly speaking, a paradigm is something that serves as a pattern, or a model. In science, in the way that Khun used it, it means “a set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them.”

Therefore, a paradigm shift is when one paradigm gets replaced by another, usually due to a radical change in technology, or, in Kuhn’s world of science, when enough anomalies build up to make sustaining the current paradigm impossible.

Paradigm Shift Examples

In Science

Probably the two biggest paradigm shifts in science that profoundly changed our view of the world were first in our understanding of evolution from being goal-oriented to Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, and second the switch from Newtonian physics to Einstein’s theory of relativity.

In the first, prior to the 19th century the prevailing belief in evolution was that a species evolved as needed – that, for example, the giraffe developed a long neck because it was necessary to reach the fruits in tall trees. Linear algebra is probably the easiest and the most useful branch of modern mathematics. Indeed, topics such as matrices and linear equations are often taught in middle or high school. On the other hand, concepts and techniques from linear algebra underlie cutting-edge disciplines such as data science and quantum computation. And in the field of numerical analysis, everything is linear algebra!

Today, I am proud to announce a free interactive course, Introduction to Linear Algebra, that will help students all over the world to master this wonderful subject. The course uses the powerful functions for matrix operations in the Wolfram Language and addresses questions such as “How long would it take to solve a system of 500 linear equations?” or “How does data compression work?”

Motivation from History

The ancient Babylonians and Chinese knew how to solve simple systems of linear equations with two or three equations. However, the first systematic method for solving linear systems was given in 1750 by Gabriel Cramer, who formulated a rule for solving such systems using determinants. This was followed by the 1810 work of Carl Friedrich Gauss, who developed the technique known as Gaussian elimination for solving linear systems. Next, in 1850, James Joseph Sylvester introduced the notion of a matrix to represent arrays of numbers such as those formed by the coefficients of a linear system. A few years later, around 1855, Arthur Cayley published his work on the theory of matrices and operations on them. Finally, in 1888, Giuseppe Peano defined the notion of an abstract vector space, which plays a unifying role in modern linear algebra.

In keeping with the historical development, Introduction to Linear Algebra focuses on matrices and determinants, while vector spaces are discussed only when necessary during the course.

Overview

Students taking this course will receive a thorough introduction to linear algebra including standard topics, such as linear systems, geometric transformations, matrix operations, determinants and eigenvalues. The course also includes a few advanced topics, such as the singular value decomposition, one of the most valuable concepts in applied linear algebra. Here is a sneak peek at some of the topics in the course (shown in the left-hand column):

I have worked hard to keep the course down to a reasonable length, and I expect that you will finish watching the 29 videos and also complete the five short quizzes in about five hours. (Hence the title of the blog post!)

Finally, I assume that the students are familiar with high-school algebra and basic trigonometry, but no calculus is required for this course.

The next few sections of the blog post will describe the different components of the course in detail.

Lessons

The heart of the course is a set of 25 lessons, beginning with “What Is Linear Algebra?”. This introductory lesson includes a discussion of the different approaches to linear algebra, followed by a brief history of the subject and an outline of the course. Here is a short excerpt from the video for this lesson:

Further lessons begin with an overview of the topic (for example, eigenvalues and eigenvectors), followed by a discussion of the key concepts interspersed with examples that illustrate the ideas using Wolfram Language functions for matrix computations.

The videos range from 7 to 12 minutes in length, and each video is accompanied by a transcript notebook displayed on the right-hand side of the screen. You can copy and paste Wolfram Language input directly from the transcript notebook to the embedded scratch notebook to try the examples for yourself.

Exercises

Each lesson is accompanied by a set of five exercises to review the concepts covered during the lesson. Since this course is designed for independent study, a detailed solution is given for all exercises. The following shows an exercise from lesson 14 on applications of determinants:

The notebooks with the exercises are interactive, so students can try variations of each problem in the Wolfram Cloud. In particular, they are encouraged to change the entries of the matrices, vary the dimensions, etc. and experience the awesome power of the Wolfram Language for matrix computations.

Application Sessions

Each section of the course includes an application session, which discusses a real-world application of the ideas developed in that section. There are four application sessions on polynomial interpolation, economic models, quantum entanglement and data compression, respectively. The following is a short excerpt from the video for data compression:

These application sessions celebrate the great success of linear algebra techniques in engineering, computer science and other fields. I would like to thank Roger Germundsson, director of R&D at Wolfram, who suggested their inclusion in the course.

Quizzes

Each section of the course ends with a short, multiple-choice quiz with five problems. The quiz problems are roughly at the same level as those discussed in the lessons, and a student who reviews the section carefully should have no difficulty in doing well on the quiz.

Students will receive instant feedback about their responses to the quiz questions, and they are encouraged to try any method (including hand or computer calculations) to solve them.

Course Certificate

I strongly encourage students to watch all the lessons and attempt the quizzes in the recommended sequence, since each topic in the course relies on earlier concepts and techniques. You can request a certificate of completion, pictured here, at the end of the course. A course certificate is achieved after watching all the lesson and application videos and passing all the quizzes. It represents proficiency in the fundamentals of linear algebra and will add value to your resume or social media profile.

There is also an optional final exam at the end of the course. You can receive an advanced level of certification by passing this exam.

Course Description: Radio brought the world into homes in the 1920s, broadcasting music, sound effects and, spoken word. But, a lot has changed in the last century. In this course, we’ll explore how early radio programs helped pave the way for today’s podcasting boom. From spot news to feature reporting to podcasting, the class will also offer practical experience in producing audio journalism with a strong emphasis on public media values. The course will focus on how to report on and craft compelling, attention-holding narratives, as well as best practices for developing, pitching and producing a podcast. The class will cover the fundamentals of strong audio journalism, from quality sound gathering, to strong interview techniques, to writing for the ear, to authentic vocal delivery.

Course Objectives and Goals:

Editorial

1. Develop news judgement.

2. Experience writing and producing newscast elements and audio features.

3. Crafting language that is meant to be heard.

4. Effective prep and editing of interviews.

5. Proficiency in writing for audio on deadline.

6. Understanding scene, character, tension and ambience in audio stories.

7. Curating audio elements to tell effective audio stories.

Technical

1. Use of a digital recorder and audio kit elements.

2. Troubleshooting recordings in the field.

3. Recording ambient sound.

4. Audio editing using Pro Tools and Audacity.

5. Showcase work on the cloud-storage site SoundCloud.

Technical/Equipment Requirements:

Pro Tools and Audacity: You will be learning how to use Pro Tools and Audacity audio editing software for production in this course. You can use either for projects depending on convenience. The software will be available for use in FMH 317 for in-class and homework assignments. Please be sure to check the classroom’s availability for your use outside of class time. You can contact Hopeton Campbell ([email protected]) for more information.

Digital Recorder: You will be expected to check out a Zoom Handy recorder and secure an SD card(s) to bring to class when directed by the syllabus below or by the instructor. You will also use the Handy for assignments on your own. The recorders should be signed out with Hopeton Campbell ([email protected]) in FMH 317. You must email him in advance to arrange for pickup and return within 48 hours. Hopeton may also point you to an online signup sheet for future pickups. These kits are available to all audio students in the University, so please book well in advance of your deadlines.

Backup Storage: You are expected to back up everything you record on your own external drive. This includes raw recordings, Pro Tools projects (not simply the individual sessions), and bounced pieces. Do not save only one version of your work on a classroom computer.

Batteries: Please make sure you always bring extra AA batteries with you for recordings. Digital recorders can deplete power quickly and you could lose your audio if your batteries die while recording. Don’t trust the display that says your batteries are fully charged!

Radio Rule of Thumb: expect technical problems to arise and plan accordingly

GRADING / EXPECTATIONS / POLICIES

Attendance: Students are required to attend all classes. In the event of a missed class, students are responsible for course material covered during the missed class as well as assignments and should make every effort to obtain notes from classmates. Absences due to illness or unforeseen circumstances must be officially excused. Unexcused absences will affect the student’s final grade. Lateness beyond 15 minutes is considered an unexcused absence.

Participation: Group discussion and teamwork are highly valued in this course, as they are in professional media organizations. You will be expected to work with your fellow students to offer each other constructive criticism, and help troubleshoot technical problems, scripts and assignments. Lack of participation on any of these fronts could hurt your grade.

Exercises/Assignments: Students will complete audio assignments in and out of class. All work must be officially submitted via your name folder in our class Google Drive folder and/or submitted as a SoundCloud link in e-mail. Please listen carefully to directions. For every day that an assignment is handed in late, the grade on that piece will be lowered by a letter grade step, e.g. A to an A-. Our file naming convention is: yearmonthday_projectname_yourlastname. You can use this same convention for labeling both audio and scripts.

Listening: There are no required textbooks for this course, but you are expected to keep up with the news and listen to audio journalism every day, such as on NPR, BBC, CBS 880AM, 1010WINS and Bloomberg Radio in addition to your favorite podcasts. At times, the instructor may assign additional listening and reading.

Recommended Reading: Sound Reporting by Jonathan Kern and Out on the Wire by Jessica Abel.

Deadlines

As a journalist, it is important to adhere to the deadlines set by your newsroom. The ability to work well quickly and under pressure is an indispensable skill. Missed deadlines will affect your grade for individual assignments and your overall final grade. Please take time to review the class calendar in its entirety and plan your semester accordingly.

Data Loss and Working with Digital Recorders, Computer, and Software

This course requires the use of digital media for storing and transmitting required coursework. Learning good data management practices constitutes a portion of the class agenda. As such, computer failure or other forms of computer data loss will NOT be accepted as a legitimate excuse for late work.

Working with computers is risky business. Some computers and software can behave unpredictably. Each student must act responsibly and make back-up copies of data at every convenient opportunity. The safest way to do this is to copy data to a portable drive that can be stored in a secure location. Simply making extra copies of files and storing them on the same hard drive is not enough. There is a ‘zero-tolerance’ position on this matter due to the fact that lenience on this issue is far too easily abused.

Cell phone calls, emailing, texting, internet surfing, etc…

Do not engage in these activities while in class. Taking notes on laptops is permissible. Emailing and surfing the internet is NOT.

Journalistic Integrity

Any evidence of unethical behavior, dishonesty, plagiarism, etc. will be reported to the appropriate university offices. Students are not permitted to interview friends and relatives due to obvious conflicts of interest. If a situation arises in which the story calls for an interview with a mother, friend, etc… the student MUST have faculty permission. Failure to notify the instructor before turning in the assignment will result in a lowered grade.
