The Rise of CNG Kit Fitting in Pune: A Sustainable Solution for Urban Mobility
Tumblr media
In the vibrant city of Pune, where the hustle and bustle of urban life never seem to cease, a quiet revolution is taking place on the streets - the proliferation of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) kit fittings in vehicles. As concerns about environmental sustainability and rising fuel costs continue to grow, more and more residents are turning to CNG as an alternative fuel source for their vehicles. This shift towards cleaner energy not only benefits the environment but also offers a cost-effective solution for commuters in Pune.
The installation of CNG kits in vehicles has gained significant traction in Pune due to various factors. Firstly, the city's commitment to reducing air pollution has led to the promotion of cleaner fuels such as CNG. With Pune being one of the most polluted cities in India, according to various environmental indices, the adoption of CNG vehicles can play a crucial role in mitigating air pollution levels.
Secondly, the economic benefits associated with CNG usage cannot be understated. As the prices of conventional fuels like petrol and diesel continue to rise, CNG offers a much cheaper alternative. In Pune, where the cost of living is on the higher side, the savings accrued from using CNG can make a significant difference for vehicle owners, especially those who rely on their vehicles for daily commuting.
Furthermore, the government's push towards promoting CNG infrastructure has made it increasingly convenient for Pune residents to make the switch. CNG filling stations have been strategically set up across the city, ensuring easy accessibility for vehicle owners. Additionally, the availability of certified CNG kit fitting centers in Pune has made the installation process hassle-free and reliable.
The environmental benefits of CNG are undeniable. Compared to traditional fuels, CNG burns much cleaner, emitting significantly lower levels of harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and nitrogen oxides. This reduction in emissions not only helps improve air quality but also contributes to mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
Moreover, the use of CNG can lead to long-term savings for vehicle owners. CNG engines are known to have a longer lifespan compared to petrol or diesel engines due to lower levels of wear and tear. Additionally, CNG combustion produces fewer carbon deposits, resulting in reduced maintenance costs over time.
However, despite the numerous advantages of CNG, certain challenges need to be addressed. One of the primary concerns is the initial cost of installing a CNG kit, which can be relatively high for some vehicle owners. Additionally, there may be concerns regarding the availability of CNG refuelling stations, especially in areas outside the city limits.
In conclusion, the growing popularity of CNG kit fitting in Pune underscores a shift towards sustainable transportation solutions in urban areas. With its environmental benefits, cost-effectiveness, and government support, CNG has emerged as a viable alternative for vehicle owners looking to reduce their carbon footprint and save on fuel expenses. As Pune continues to embrace cleaner energy options, the adoption of CNG vehicles is poised to play a significant role in shaping the city's transportation landscape for years to come.

Bill G looks after Viking V after its return from Bonneville (Dr. Seal's '66 Vette is on the right in the background.)
Viking V Makes History on Natural Gas Fuel
Résumé, Winter, 1982
The pace is swift at Western’s Vehicle Research Institute (VRI). Western’s experimental car, Viking V, recently became the nation’s first automobile to travel 145 mph in a measured mile on compressed natural gas fuel. That natural gas fuel is basically the same product many residents use to heat their homes each winter. And Viking V’s speed, although impressive, rates behind a number of other VRI priorities.
Western’s students and technicians were out to prove a simple point when they traveled last month to Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats for the annual Speed Week competition. “The main goal of our tests,’’ said VRI technician Bill Green, “was to show that compressed natural gas Is an excellent high performance fuel as well as an economy fuel. We think we made our point.”
Western’s Viking cars have made national headlines in recent years by obtaining up to 94 miles per gallon in cross-country rallies. In those competitions with other colleges and engineering firms, the cars used slightly modified engines running on gasoline or diesel fuels.
Now, under the sponsorship and funding of a Calgary firm, CNG Fuel Systems, VRI director Michael Seal and his crew have designed and developed a carburetor that some day could have service station attendants responding to requests to “Fill ’er up with natural.”
During the Utah tests. Viking V was fitted with a 1500cc turbocharged Subaru engine converted to run on natural gas. Modifications increased the engine’s former gasoline power rating of 70 horsepower to 150 horsepower on natural gas.
“We took advantage of the fact that natural gas has 130 octane, as opposed to conventional gasoline with octane ratings of between 87 and 94,” Green said.
“The car reached a top speed of 145 mph in a measured mile course,” he added. “As far as we know, that is the fastest any vehicle classified as a passenger car has ever gone on compressed natural gas.”
Green said the fuel tank used by the Viking V team was a surplus unit from the U.S. Space Shuttle program. The tank, which weighs only 29 pounds. Is made out of aluminum and wrapped with a super strong synthetic material. He said an equivalent sized steel tank, normally used in gasoline powered cars, weighs nearly 100 pounds.
Now back in Bellingham, the VRI teammates replaced Viking V’s racing motor with a basic 1600cc Subaru engine, but retained the natural gas fuel and carburetion systems.
“We learned a lot of things during our tests that will help us in the natural gas conversions of gasoline powered vehicles,” Green said.
He added that several Northwest firms have fitted their company cars with VRI’s natural gas system to provide the researchers with long-range performance data. It now costs about $1,500 to convert an American car to a natural gas fuel system.
But the natural gas equivalent to a gallon of gasoline currently costs only about 45 cents. At those prices. Green predicted. Western’s natural gas-powered cars will continue their quests for fuel efficiency and economy.

STORAGE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY [CNG] AT HIGH PRESSURES
Tumblr media
In 2022, India became the fourth largest country in the world by valuation of the automotive industry. With this massive influx of automobiles, India is leaning towards Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a significant renewable energy variant. CNG as a fuel helps curtail emissions from traditional fuels such as diesel and petrol. India’s projected sales of CNG vehicles will increase from 863.22 thousand units in 2021 to 1,463.46 thousand units by 2029.
Government Initiatives to Promote CNG Vehicles:
Individual states are investing heavily to build a CNG infrastructure.
Keeping the price of CNG lower than traditional fuels prompt customers to see it as a cost-saving option.
SATAT Scheme for producing automobile-grade CNG from biogas generated from waste.
The segment was dominated by passenger vehicles; sales of CNG accounted for 12.1 percent of sales at 177,410 units as against 120,070 units in 2021; carmakers are betting on CNG in a big way as it gives owners a more affordable driving option. The top CNG car manufacturers are Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Bajaj & Mahindra.
Infrastructure:
One of the critical elements to support this boost in sales will be technology in the form of safer storage for this flammable gas at higher pressures. CNG is stored at 250 barg pressures in the cascades at filling stations and transferred into smaller cylinders, cars, buses, etc.
CNG Cylinder Types and Manufacturers:
CNG tanks can be categorized into Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, and Type 4. The type is determined primarily based on design, production method, and liner material. Generally, in India, Type 1 Cylinder comprises all steel, which is relatively economical and heavier. The varying capacity of 30 L, 60 L, and 90 L cylinders are used in 3-wheelers, cars, trucks, and buses.
Tumblr media
Use of Compressor:
A high-pressure compressor is used in a very critical stage of the manufacturing process. The air leakage test is one of the final, conclusive tests wherein the cylinder's integrity is checked before it is given a clean chit for dispatch. Compressed air at 400 barg pressures and 200 m3/hr flows are generally required for the process.

Belgian retailer Colruyt starts an unprecedented charging station offensive
Tumblr media
DATS 24[1] will install at least 10,000 public charging points in Belgium over the next five years. This makes Colruyt's gas station subsidiary one of the largest charging station operators in the country.
It was a bit lost in the euphoria about the robust profit forecast that Jef Colruyt launched for the rest of the year. But the chairman of Colruyt[2] actually said it on Wednesday at the shareholders' meeting: the company will install 10,000 charging points for electric cars over the next five to six years. An investment of tens of millions of euros, which should make DATS 24 a household name in charging land.
10,000 charging points is a significant number. According to calculation methods from the European Commission, this is sufficient to supply 100,000 electric cars with sufficient power. The government of Flanders' objective is to have at least 35,000 public charging point equivalents by 2025. Fast chargers count more, which means approximately 25,000 charging points (or 12,500 charging stations with two sockets).
Charging stations are not new for Colruyt. The filling station subsidiary DATS 24 has been working on alternative energy sources for cars for years, from hydrogen to natural gas (CNG) and electricity. The head office in Halle has one of the largest charging plazas in Belgium: 109 electric cars can charge simultaneously. The company has a total of 930 slow charging points in the car parks of 280 stores. That number should increase more than tenfold in five years.
“The first charging plazas should be operational according to the new plan before the end of this year," says the director of electromobility at DATS 24 Jonas Cautaerts. This concerns charging plazas with ten charging points each: two double charging stations with traditional slow chargers and three double fast chargers with a capacity of 150 kilowatts (kW). 'We looked carefully at how long people usually shop with us: 30 to 60 minutes. In that case, a 150 kW fast charger is a nice compromise," says Cautaerts.
'We know that customers like to load their shopping cart into the trunk of their car. But many public charging points are designed in such a way that the back of your electric car faces the wall, making it difficult for you to load your groceries. You won't see that at our charging stations.'
Charging for half an hour at that speed usually provides an additional driving range of about 350 kilometres. The traditional chargers, with a capacity of 10 to 20 kW, are for the price-conscious customer who does not need that much extra range. “This is necessary for people with a plug-in hybrid, but also for those who live near a charging plaza and cannot charge their electric car at their own home. The squares are available to them day and night," says the DATS 24 charging station manager.
As is customary at Colruyt, the company will largely keep the construction of the charging plazas in its own hands. The implementation is carried out in collaboration with PlugInvest[3], the charging station installer in which Colruyt invested 4 million euros last year.
Hospitals and shopping centres
The 10,000 charging points are not only located in the car parks of Colruyt, Spar[4] or Bike Republic[5] stores. Cautaerts explicitly looks for other places where people leave their cars for some time. "These could be hospitals, but also shopping centres," he says. In the long term, DATS 24 also wants to take care of the charging infrastructure for consumers. The company has its own charging card.
Cautaerts cannot say how much Colruyt will spend on the charging station offensive. "But it's a huge investment." Due to the mix of traditional and fast chargers that DATS 24 will build, the costs will soon amount to tens of millions of euros. Cautaerts: 'But if you look at the long term and how quickly the electric car is advancing, I expect it will soon be profitable.'
Colruyt is not the first group to announce a charging station offensive. Delhaize announced at the end of last year that it will invest around 100 million euros to have the French charging station start-up Elektra[6] install 1,800 fast chargers at its supermarkets. These are just two of the many companies that want to benefit from the enormous increase in electric cars on Belgian roads. While electric car number 100,000 was celebrated on our roads at the beginning of this year, the counter could already reach 200,000 by the end of this year.
"It's going to be busy," says the chairman of the electrification organisation EV Belgium[7] Jochen De Smet. 'We are heading to a gigantic oversupply of charging infrastructure in the next three to five years if everything that has been announced is actually installed.' He points out that most people charge their electric car at home or at work and not at a public charging station while on the road.

The Cost and Savings of Installing a CNG Kit in Your Vehicle
In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards using compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative to traditional fuels like petrol and diesel. CNG is a cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel, and it is also more affordable than traditional fuels. In Pune, many vehicle owners have already made the switch to CNG, and many more are considering it. In this blog, we will discuss the cost and savings of installing a CNG kit in your vehicle in Pune.
Cost of CNG Kit Fitting in Pune
The cost of installing a CNG kit in your vehicle in Pune can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the type of vehicle, the type of CNG kit, and the quality of installation. Typically, the cost of a CNG kit in Pune can range from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 40,000, with the installation cost ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000. However, it is important to note that these prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the specific vendor or installer you choose.
Savings of Installing a CNG Kit in Your Vehicle
While the upfront cost of installing a CNG kit in your vehicle in Pune may seem high, the savings you can enjoy over the long term can more than make up for it. The main advantage of using CNG as a fuel is that it is much cheaper than petrol or diesel. In Pune, the cost of CNG is typically around Rs. 50 to Rs. 55 per kilogram, while the cost of petrol is around Rs. 100 per liter and the cost of diesel is around Rs. 90 per liter. This means that by using CNG instead of petrol or diesel, you can save up to 50% on your fuel costs.
In addition to being cheaper, CNG is also a more environmentally friendly fuel than petrol or diesel. When burned, CNG produces significantly fewer emissions than petrol or diesel, which means that using CNG can help to reduce your vehicle's carbon footprint. This can be especially important in a city like Pune, where air pollution is a growing concern.
Other Benefits of Using CNG
In addition to the cost and environmental savings, there are other benefits to using CNG as a fuel. For example, CNG is a cleaner burning fuel, which means that it can help to prolong the life of your engine and reduce maintenance costs. It can also lead to smoother engine performance and a quieter ride.
Furthermore, the government of India has been promoting the use of CNG as part of its efforts to reduce the country's dependence on imported fuels. As a result, there are now many CNG filling stations in Pune and other cities across the country, which means that it is becoming increasingly convenient to use CNG as a fuel.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while the initial cost of installing a CNG kit in your vehicle in Pune may seem high, the savings you can enjoy over the long term can more than make up for it. By using CNG instead of petrol or diesel, you can save up to 50% on your fuel costs, reduce your vehicle's carbon footprint, and enjoy other benefits such as smoother engine performance and a quieter ride.
