Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers: What Matters?
Reading through all the articles under the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers, here are my 3 chosen codes in order of importance.
1. Article XI: The Teacher as a Person
Any teacher in becoming must know about this and put emphasis on dignity and self-discipline, just as how it was highlighted under the sections. Given this day and age where people are vulnerable to what is being modelled to them, the role of the teacher is highly important and needed. Yet, some in the making may be easily influenced by the society and its beliefs, its practices, and the impact of technology abuse in the process of its advancements. So, whether being observed in schools or at home, or not during private and personal time, teachers must observe a dignified personality regardless. Thus, choosing Article XI as the most important.
2. Article IV: A Teacher and the Profession
“Teachers are model.” This is certainly one of the many quotations often referred to as being a teacher. You must know much, if not too much and be an expert in the field. I could not agree more because teachers should want the best for the students–both in character development and knowledge acquisition. Furthermore, being best at all times may be easier said than done. However, keeping things professional and still giving the best for quality education are enough to ensure that even on bad days, a teacher is still aware of the chosen profession.
3. Article VIII - The Teachers and Learners
This article stresses the need to be as morally just as being considerate to the learners at the same time. In this world where patience sometimes runs out, one of those many patience that needs extra ounces are that of the teachers, if not doctors. The article clearly reminds the teachers of what to and what not to, to ensure both professionalism and dignity, that perfectly compliments the aforementioned articles. It is under the duty to follow due processes if needed so, put first the welfare of the students, avoid discrimination and gifts in exchange for concessions, and be careful in making relationship. Hence, ensuring a safe environment and a healthy teacher-learner relationship.
