Sono create appositamente per il volume e rappresentano una sintesi della storia, sono una suggestione necessaria per l’acquisto. Nei primi anni l’artista lavorava a ogni elemento, disegnato persino il cerchio, per poi decidere cosa metterci dentro. Per anni sono state la nostra più importante forza vendita in edicola”.

Urania negli anni ha rappresentato uno dei principali ponti tra il lettore e la fantascienza, sono i volumi che tuo padre ti passava o che trovavi curiosando in libreria quando cominciavi a sviluppare interesse per la lettura, sono il libro pieno di sabbia e con le pagine piegate che ti trovavi nello zaino alla fine delle vacanze estive. Attraverso gli Urania in Italia sono arrivati autori come Matheson, Clarke, Asimov, Dick, Bradbury, Ballard, Bulgakov e hanno rappresentato per anni un bastione di difesa contro chi riteneva la fantascienza e la letteratura di genere qualcosa di basso, di volgare e inutile, storiacce per ragazzini, perdigiorno o poco di buono, a differenza della Letteratura maiuscola che trattava delle cose importanti.

Oggi Urania è la pubblicazione di Mondadori in abbonamento col maggior numero di iscritti (anche se la più venduta resta quella dei Gialli). “Sono persone che spesso leggono solo fantascienza, come usava anni fa, e che al minimo cambio della grafica impazziscono” – spiega Forte – “perché gli scombiniamo la simmetria delle mensole”.

“Nell’ultimo decennio tutto il genere fantastico ha visto l’arrivo di un pubblico completamente nuovo” – racconta Belmonte – “un pubblico che si è formato con Harry Potter, con Hunger Games e tutta la narrativa young adult degli scorsi anni. Sono lettori che amano più generi, che mescolano senza problema fantascienza e fantasy in una più ampia definizione di “fantastico” e che ovviamente vogliamo intercettare. Lo abbiamo fatto con la collana Oscar Fantastica, con le pubblicazioni di alto impatto visivo dei Draghi e lo faremo anche con gli Urania, che andranno incontro ad alcuni cambiamenti”.

Sì perché, forse, ve ne sarete resi conto, sta lentamente venendo meno il principale distributore degli Urania, ma anche dei fumetti seriali e di molte riviste: l’edicola. Quella che una volta era una tappa fissa nella routine italiana, il principale portale di accesso per tantissime cose (una volta in edicola si vendevano videogiochi senza problemi) dal fumetto Bonelli al film, passando per i pupazzi e, ovviamente, gli Urania, sta crollando.

Non ci andiamo più, non ci spendiamo più come un tempo, preferiamo leggere le notizie in altro modo e comprare le cose in libreria. Nei fumetti c’è chi se n’è accorto da tempo e ha dirottato là la maggior parte degli investimenti. Bonelli sta portando sempre più iniziative negli scaffali delle librerie, dopo aver monopolizzato le edicole, per seguire il suo pubblico e trovarne di nuovo e la stessa cosa farà Urania.

N.S. museum curator working to unearth more histories on goat named 'Robert the Bruce'

The curator of the Army Museum at the Halifax Citadel is on an unusual quest.

He's hoping to uncover more information about an unlikely participant in The First World War -- and one with a connection to a Maritime war hero.

Lt.-Col. Guy Maclean Matheson was one of Canada's most decorated soldiers of the First World War. His medals at the Army Museum represent a forgotten story of that war.

He was a Cape Bretoner who returned home with an unusual wartime souvenir.

"It's always been in the back of my mind," said Ken Hynes,the chief curator at the Army Museum at the Halifax Citadel."Once we knew that a goat was the mascot of the 25th Battalion and his name was Robert the Bruce, (I thought) what else can we find out about that?'"

Hynes' research has uncovered quite a bit about how a goat bought in Belgium became the mascot for one of Nova Scotia's most famous battalions -- The Nova Scotia Rifles.

"They must have thought it would be a great thing to have a mascot, and the pipe band was actually the outfit that purchased the goat," Hynes said.

In the museum, there is a photo of the pipe band, and their goat, along with a collar made specifically for "Robert the Bruce" to wear -- although only on special occasions.

If you're wondering where the name Robert the Bruce came from, he was actually king of Scotland in the early 1300s and led Scotland in the first war of Scottish independence against England.

Hynes says the goat wouldn't have gone into battle, but would have accompanied the pipe band as it marched with the battalion.

When the war ended, this goat's tale did not.

"Robert the Bruce was given by the pipe band, or by the battalion, to Guy MacLean Matheson, and he proceeded to take the goat home to the family farm, at Inlet Baddeck," said Hynes.

As the story goes, the goat lived on Matheson's family farm until it died in the 1920s. It had allegedly snacked on produce in the family garden after it had just been sprayed with insecticide.

Earlier this week, Hynes made the trek to Cape Breton and with the help of the property owner found what's left of the farmhouse.

But the site is overgrown, making it tough to find any sign of the goat's final resting place.

Still, Hynes isn't giving up.

"The whole thing is indicative of the layers upon layers of history that exist, not just in the Matheson family, but in many families in Nova Scotia," Hynes aid. "Everything's connected."

Matheson eventually moved to the United States and died in 1981.

Hynes wants to reach his descendants in the hopes they heard the stories about Robert the Bruce -- a piece of history that is no longer forgotten.

The Ωmega Man

The Omega Man (stylized as The Ωmega Man) is a 1971 American post-apocalyptic action film directed by Boris Sagal and starring Charlton Heston as a survivor of a global pandemic. It was written by John William Corrington and Joyce Corrington, based on the 1954 novel I Am Legend by American writer Richard Matheson. The film's producer, Walter Seltzer, went on to work with Heston again in the dystopian science-fiction film Soylent Green in 1973.

In March 1975, a Sino-Soviet border conflict escalates into full-scale war in which biological warfare destroys most of the human race. U.S. Army Col. Robert Neville, M.D., is a scientist based in Los Angeles. As he begins to succumb to the plague, he injects himself with an experimental vaccine, rendering him immune.

By August 1977, Neville believes he is the plague's only immune survivor. Struggling to maintain his sanity, he spends his days patrolling the now-desolate Los Angeles, hunting and killing members of "the Family", a cult of plague victims who were turned into nocturnal albino mutants. The Family seeks to destroy all technology and kill Neville, who has become a symbol of the science they blame for humanity's downfall. At night, living atop a fortified apartment building equipped with an arsenal of weaponry, Neville is a prisoner in his own home.

One day, as Neville is in a department store helping himself to new clothing, he spots a woman, who quickly runs away. He pursues her outside, but later decides he is hallucinating and dismisses the sighting.

On another day, the Family finally captures Neville. After a summary trial, he is found guilty of heresy by the Family's leader, Jonathan Matthias, a former news anchorman. Neville is sentenced to death and nearly burned at the stake in Dodger Stadium. He is rescued by Lisa, the woman he had earlier dismissed as a hallucination, and Dutch, a former medical student. Lisa and Dutch are part of a group of survivors, all of whom are children. Although their youth has given them some resistance to the disease, they are still vulnerable to it, and will eventually succumb to mutation. Neville realizes that even if duplicating the original vaccine is possible, salvaging humanity would take years. He believes extending his immunity to others may be possible by creating a serum from his own blood.

Neville and Lisa return to Neville's apartment, where they begin treating Lisa's brother Richie, who is succumbing to the disease. Neville and Lisa are about to have a romantic evening together, just as the generator runs out of fuel and the lights go off. The Family then attacks, sending Matthias' second-in-command, Brother Zachary, to climb up the outside of Neville's building to the open balcony of his apartment. Neville leaves Lisa upstairs as he goes to the basement garage to restart the generator. Neville returns to the apartment to find Zachary right behind an unsuspecting Lisa. Neville shoots him and he falls off the balcony to his death, dropping his spear on the balcony as he goes.

If the serum works, Neville and Lisa plan to leave the ravaged city with the rest of the survivors, and start new lives in the wilderness, leaving the Family behind to die. Neville is successful in creating the serum and administers it to Richie. Once cured, Richie reveals the Family's headquarters to Neville (the Los Angeles Civic Center), but insists that the Family is also human and that Neville's cure should be administered to them, as well. Neville disagrees with him, so Richie goes to the Family by himself to try to convince them to take the serum. Matthias refuses to believe that Neville would try to help them, accuses Richie of being sent to spy on them, and has him executed. After finding a note that Richie left, Neville rushes to rescue him, but instead finds his dead body tied to a judge's chair in a courtroom.

Meanwhile, Lisa quickly and unexpectedly succumbs to the disease and becomes one of the Family. Returning home, Neville tells Lisa about Richie's death, but she already knows and has betrayed Neville by giving Matthias and his followers access to Neville's home. Matthias, who finally has the upper hand, forces Neville to watch as the Family sets his home and equipment on fire. Neville breaks free, and once outside with Lisa, he turns and raises his gun to shoot Matthias, who is looking down from the balcony. The gun jams, giving Matthias enough time to hurl Zachary's spear at Neville, mortally wounding him. The next morning, Dutch and the survivors discover Neville dying in a fountain. He hands Dutch a flask of the blood serum, and then dies. Dutch takes Lisa (weakened and compliant because of the sunlight) away, and the survivors leave the city forever.

Matheson to Travers, and Others. --- GREER DEFENDS HIM --- County Crown Attorney Says He Found Duncan a Capable Official. --- There was considerable interest manifest as to what course the Duncan inquiry would take when it was resumed before the Board of Police Commissioners this afternoon after its delay of ten days.

The first witness called was Mr. F. E. Hodgins, K.C., counsel in the Farmers Bank inquiry, who was at once asked with reference to the $3.000 check under dispute, and which has never been found.

"Have you that $3,000 check given to Mr. W. R. Travers, in November, 1906?" asked Mr. M. K. Cowan, who took up the questioning for Mr. Duncan.

"If there was such a check," replied Mr. Hodgins, "it was put in as an exhibit. Mr. Duncan, Inspector of Detectives, says he saw it. It was left with him."

"In the tracing of the funds of the banks, were you able to find that a check had been paid out of about $3,000?"

"Mr. Travers said he had paid the money out of cash." was the reply. Mr. Hodgins went on to say that there were other bank papers of lesser importance, which had disappeared in the same manner, after they were turned over from the assignee's office to the care of the Detective Department.

Mr. Greer to Duncan's Defence. County Crown Attorney Greer was the next witness called by Mr. Cowan. "During the time you have been Crown Attorney have you had much to do with Inspector Duncan?"

"Yes, although I did not know him at all before I was appointed." "It has been suggested that Inspector Duncan has not been truthful and has been in the habit of making misleading statements. What have you found?"

"My experience of my relations with him has been satisfactory. When I first was appointed I had often to ask Inspector Duncan's advice, and I always acted on his advice and found it to be satisfactory."

Colonel Denison: "Do you know anything of Inspector Duncan's veracity?"

"Inspector Rogers told me some time ago that there had been friction between Duncan and himself, and at this time Rogers told me that he would not believe Duncan's statements."

"Yes, I remember a member of the police department say he could not believe the inspector, but I cannot place the person or the circumstances."

Christchurch, West Coast et glaciers

Bonjour bonsoir !

Après notre aventure dans les airs, c’est à pied que nous allons visiter Christchurch. Nous savions que les tremblements de terre qui avaient frappés la ville il y a 6 ans avaient été violents, mais on ne pensait pas en voir à ce point là les conséquences ! La ville (en tout cas le centre) est complètement en mutation. Les bâtiments sont soit à détruire, soit en construction. Les immeubles design côtoient les bâtiments murés et taggués en sursis… La place de l’emblématique cathédrale dont le clocher fut détruit lors du 2ème séisme reste intouchée, comme un symbole pour la mémoire des néo-zélandais.

Le jardin botanique est cela dit très beau avec ses couleurs automnales et sa serre aux milles-et-une plantes tropicale.

On ne peut pas trop s’attarder, il faut rouler un peu ce soir pour ne pas faire que de la route demain (on re-traverse l’île vers la côte ouest). En chemin on croise quelques moutons hauts comme des vaches et un ciel moutonneux (allez comprendre.)

Pour se mettre en jambe de bon matin, nous allons demander au gentil-monsieur-du-DOC quelle ballade nous pouvons faire dans la zone du Arthur Pass. Dans un discours clair net et précis, celui-ci nous indique un chemin qui correspond exactement à nos attentes (et qui prend en compte la météo relativement maussade). Efficace !

Nous arrivons ensuite sur la West Coast et faisons un saut vers le nord pour voir les Pancake Rocks. Rien à voir avec le dessert à nos yeux, mais un chouette arrêt tout de même ! La roche est bizarrement striée et découpée, et les vagues qui s’engouffrent dans les failles et les trous font un bruit du tonnerre.

Puis on poursuit la route vers le sud, c’est sauvage, la mer et le soleil à droite, la forêt et les montagnes à gauche…

Comme Montgomery est en forme, nous poussons dans la campagne jusqu’aux Hokitika Gorge. Au début on se demande si on a bien fait, mais finalement ça vaut vraiment le coup : l’eau est bleu glacier, et la ballade très sympa. En été il paraît même que l’on peut sauter du pont dans la rivière…

Cet aprèm nous allons au Franz Joseph glacier, dans les Alpes néo-zélandaise. C’est superbe : nous marchons dans la vallée, les pierres sont recouvertes de mousse verte et de orange ( ?) 

Arès une petite heure de marche nous atteignons le glacier. Mais le clou de la balade sera atteint un peu par hasard en retournant au parking : nous faisons un petit détour pour la « Peter’s pool » : un tout petit lac, mais qui reflète absolument parfaitement la montagne derrière, c’est magnifique.

Les journées sont vraiment courtes maintenant, et il est déjà temps de penser à chercher un endroit pour passer la nuit… (environ 8h-17h ici sur l’île Sud en juin !) On se pose dans un camping tranquille du DOC près d’un lac après avoir regardé le coucher de soleil sur une plage avec une petite bière.

Nous passons un col ce matin pour aller voir le glacier Fox. Comme souvent en Nouvelle-Zélande le temps change avec la vallée et nous récupérons quelques nuages. Il faut s’enfoncer assez loin pour atteindre Fox et des panneaux nous indiquent la position du glacier il y a 10 ans, 30 ans, 200 ans… C’est dramatique, il recule à une vitesse folle, encore plus vite que le Franz Joseph... A ce train là il aura disparu dans 15 ans ! C’est ironiquement aujourd’hui que cet abruti de Trump annonce son retrait de l’accord de Paris. C’est consternant.

On tente une ballade autour du lac Matheson qui est paraît-il parfait pour des vues en miroir du mont Tasman et des montagnes environnantes. La marche n’est  pas déplaisante, mais nous n’auront qu’une réflexion des nuages aujourd’hui !

On continue notre route en direction de Wanaka. Sur le chemin nous testons le meilleur café à emporter de NZ (et ces non moins délicieux pancakes au sirop d’érable) d’après les routards de passage: une dame tient une petite roulotte sur le bord de route, juste devant la plage et en plus d’être très gentille, son café est véritablement très bon !

On s’arrête également sur une plage de galets ronds, blancs et très kiffants sur laquelle on pourrait voir des pingouins. Echec pour les pingouins mais j’aurais bien ramené des galets dans mes poches moi !

On s’endort dans un camping en bord de lac peu avant Wanaka. Demain une grosse journée rando nous attend !

“L’affascinante visione dei nostri infiniti destini”. Il libro dell’estate: “Meditazioni sullo scorpione” di Sergio Solmi, un salutare veleno

Quel libro che ha valore di un aculeo. Uscito nel 1972, dal titolo indimenticabile, Meditazioni sullo Scorpione, chiunque lo conosca continua a rileggerlo, a tenerlo sotto il cuscino, ne tramanda il segreto. Qui siamo al vagabondaggio del pensiero che semina rasoi sotto le palpebre. Sergio Solmi, insomma, è uno dei più raffinati scrittori e pensatori dell’epoca, ma pochi lo sanno, presi a omaggiare Manganelli o Landolfi o altri esteti del bello stile, lo traviano all’oblio.

Eugenio Montale, 14 dicembre 1969, sul Corriere della Sera, ne narra il ricamato pudore. “Solmi non è mai impre­parato a nulla, ha sempre qualcosa da insegnare. Uomo mite, ricco di humour (sa­ranno una sorpresa poesie ed epigrammi tuttora inediti), uomo scarso di voce e di ge­sti, è stato anche, quand’era il caso di esserlo, un uomo impegnato nella vita civile. Incarcerato dai nazisti nel ’44 ha saputo dileguarsi in modo addirittura metapsichico, un segreto che lui solo conosce. Non ha mai tenuto a esibirsi, a farsi vedere”. Esposto ai regni al di là di questo, non gl’importava l’esibizione, ambizione di chi non ha volto. Pur nei meandri della Storia, si è dileguato – un vero mago, uno sciamano.

Ci fu una specie di venerazione verso Solmi, nato 120 anni fa, cresciuto a Torino, impiegato ad alto livello nella Banca Commerciale Italiana (il che gli impedì di infognarsi nel battibecco letterario, da cui si tenne a distanza). Carlo Bo ne scrisse così: “Solmi è stato antifascista, combattente del­la Resistenza e nella sua fa­mosa fuga dalla caserma del­le brigate nere di via Ro­vello dobbiamo rilevare un tratto che illumina anche lo studioso e il poeta. La­sciato per un momento li­bero dai suoi aguzzini, il Solmi chiese dove fosse l’u­scita e se la squagliò. Que­sto è stato sempre il suo modo di comportarsi anche in letteratura: presente e li­bero, padrone di se stesso e in grado di giudicare le de­bolezze e i ‘vuoti’ degli al­tri. Proprio per questo, sen­za mai venire meno alla re­gola del riserbo e della pru­denza, insomma fuor della mischia, è arrivato più in là degli altri, senza aver pagato scotti di nessun ge­nere, arbitro dei suoi lun­ghissimi e intensi approcci alla verità poetica”.

Nella ricostruzione di un Mitreo ho visto il toro di bronzo che si allontana, disfacendo il corpo, dallo scorpione con la coda irta, simile a una lanterna. Scorpione fuoco in fuga, perpetua agnizione. Dello scorpione, inteso anche come sego zodiacale (“vermiglia, al centro dell’addome, brillerà la luce di Antares”), Solmi fa il centro dell’enigma, dell’ambiguità d’esistere, del ritorno allo scatto che uccide, vibrando la vita. “Attenuandosi il febbrile scompenso che diciamo esistere, ci sembrerà sempre più di ‘essere’, come gli animali e le piante, che tanto più di noi coincidono con la loro figura, affermano senza dubitazioni la loro essenza… Il fertile abisso dell’inesistenza d’aprirà ancora una volta a picco nel nostro essere, la guerra madre di tutte le cose ci metterà ancora contro noi stessi, e un fresco pullulare d’inafferrabili memorie rispumeggerà ancora dalla cieca corrente: inebriante movimento, cara vertigine di sentirci ancora fuggenti tra essere e non essere, estrema ventata di poesia”. Cavalcare lo scorpione e suggere tutti i veleni del vivere, come voleva Rimbaud, tra i totem della ricerca letteraria di Solmi.

All’apparenza, di Solmi c’è tutto – ma è il nulla. Adelphi ha preso a stampare le sue Opere (il primo volume è dedicato a “Poesie, meditazioni e ricordi”, 1984), l’ultimo volume, il sesto, è uscito nel 2011 e raccoglie gli “Scritti sull’arte”. I volumi sono pregiati, costosi, introvabili. Il libro delle Poesie complete pubblicato nella ‘Biblioteca Adelphi’ è orfano, non ha spazio in libreria. Che strazio: Solmi è un pensatore disorganico e geniale, dalla scrittura cristallina (pare, a spanne, Cristina Campo), è il nostro Cioran, depurato dai neri estremismi. Porta la lingua italiana al di là del salotto, inadempiente agli ordini ma tesa alla disciplina (le fatali Meditazioni sullo Scorpione sono il distillato di ispirazioni “che vanno dal 1925”: cinquant’anni di pensare in poco più di 150 pagine necessarie).

Cecità sterminata è non citare Solmi se si parla di Leopardi, soprattutto nel bicentenario de L’Infinito. Solmi aveva una preziosa mania per Leopardi: i suoi Studi leopardiani riempiono il secondo volume delle sue opere. Tra i tanti saggi, quello su Leopardi e Valéry ha un ingresso geniale, proprio di un genio privo di didascalia e di didattica a norma di critica. “Non so se alcuno abbia mai parlato dell’orrore di questi cieli italiani, privi di vòlta, sbiancati, divorati dal pulviscolo luminoso. Sono cieli che, a fissarvi lo sguardo, danno le vertigini… Cieli del nord, cieli a cupola, conclusi, fatti a misura umana. Ma questi vuoti, scolorati cieli della riviera, se insiste all’orizzonte una leggerissima bruma, si confondono col male e lo annientano nel loro scintillio vorace. Sulla spiaggia, ci sentiamo soli, a picco su un vuoto senza alto né basso, il vuoto vibratile e brulicante degli spazi, un chiarissimo nulla. Mi piace supporre che sia stata la contemplazione di questi cieli a suscitare in Leopardi l’idea, che insistentemente ritorna nello Zibaldone, e curiosamente precorre Einstein, di un universo finito e, a contrasto con esso, della infinità del nulla”.

Le Poesie di Solmi abitavano nella collana de ‘Lo Specchio’ Mondadori: era troppo austero, un estroso della riservatezza, per giocare a fare il poeta. Per questo, rispetto a troppi poeti a comando, le antologie d’ufficio si dimenticano di lui, l’eccentrico. Questa Preghiera alla vita è la sua poesia più nota:

Perché più bruci, per meglio sentirti, perché sempre il cuor mi divida il tuo taglio assetato di lama, perché la notte smanioso invano a cercarti io mi dibatta e mi raggiunga l’alba come una morte amica, tregua non darmi, mia vita, lasciami l’umiliata povertà, le nere insonnie, le cure ed i mali. Lasciami il delirante desiderio che si gonfia in miraggi e il timido sangue che s’agita ad ogni soffio.

Perché più bruci, per meglio sentire questo tuo bacio che torce e scolora, ogni mia fibra consuma al tuo fuoco, ogni pensiero soggioga ed annulla, ogni tuo dolce, la pace e la gioia, negami ancora.

A proposito di Cioran – di cui è depurato sodale – Solmi scrive: “Questo scrittore mi ha sempre molto interessato: anche per il suo gusto per la decomposizione. È un brillantissimo causeur, ha cultura a strafottere, è un poeta del pensiero… Il pessimismo di Cioran è un pessimismo per ridere”. Una risata sul nulla.

Cultore dello Zodiaco, incuneato nell’Oriente del desiderio, formidabile traduttore, pioniere della lettura, insieme a Franco Lucentini, sessant’anni fa, nel 1959, per Einaudi, Solmi cura Le meraviglie del possibile, la prima, fondamentale antologia della letteratura di fantascienza. Specializzato in eclettismo, non in qualche ‘specialità’ specifica, rabdomante della cultura, curioso, mica acclamato accademico. Nell’antologia, che esaltò il ‘genere’ in Italia sono raccolti testi di Ray Bradbury e di Frederic Brown, di Philip K. Dick e di Richard Matheson, di Isaac Asimov e di H.G. Wells. A Wells, Solmi dedica un saggio, nelle fatali “Meditazioni”, che sfoga nell’iridescenza irrazionale: “Quante volte molti di noi, magari in condizioni di veglia perfetta, dopo la doccia fredda mattutina, rivestendosi, infilandosi le scarpe, non hanno spiato per un momento la propria esistenza parallela, popolata di figure con volti, nomi e professioni determinate, sconosciute alla loro esistenza ordinaria?… I Celesti hanno subito cercato di nascondere la mano dietro la schiena, ma l’esitazione di un attimo li ha traditi una volta per sempre, spalancandoci l’affascinante visione dei nostri infiniti destini”.

Perché non si parli ogni giorno di Meditazioni sullo Scorpione è fin troppo chiaro. Quel libro è un veleno, potremmo non avere bisogno di altro. (d.b.)

Una certa ‘idiozia’ è pur necessaria al pensiero: una lentezza maldestra, la presenza d’ostacoli che lo spirito superficiale risolve e supera in un batter d’occhio. La nostra riflessione più vera nasce a quel punto in cui si scopre la mostruosità, l’impensabilità di ‘ciò che è evidente’. L’intelligenza, per vivere, deve per forza nutrirsi di stupidità: cosa sarebbe un’intelligenza senza nutrimento? Certi spiriti eloquenti e approssimativi, implacabili discettatori e sofisticatori, coloro che tengono, in una discussione, ad aver sempre ‘l’ultima parola’, ci offrono un esempio di questa intelligenza agile e vacua, senza nutrimento né sostanza.

Il nostro pensiero più profondo nasce a volte improvvisamente dal passivo stagnare della nostra vita, come la ninfea nel fango. Nel brulicare d’infinite sciocchezze e vanità, nell’inconsistente polverio che noi chiamiamo ‘vita interiore’, è a volte come un lampo momentaneo: le parole insulse e meccaniche, le incerte visioni corporee che il flutto limoso traeva con sé s’aggrumano e s’organizzano, prendono figura: è il mistero carnale d’ogni creazione, la luce che albeggia sul caos.

Gli specchi regolano le apparizioni. Penso che una volta la forma umana si riflettesse soltanto nell’aria colpita dalla luce, nell’alone fugace del miraggio, e che, salendo una duna sabbiosa, ci potesse accadere d’incontrare la nostra stessa persona, fatta leggera e luminosa come quella dei semidei. Così, vedersi doveva essere un miracolo, la nostra immagine sorgeva capricciosamente di sotterra, si proponeva a noi senza averla mai cercata né sospettata, con la logica importuna e incomprensibile dei fantasmi. Forse soltanto a qualche privilegiato, a colore che dovevano portare al mondo il male del pensiero, la torpida malinconia della vita dello spirito, accadde talvolta, in qualche mezzogiorno spopolato, di riflettere la propria figura a pochi passi, eguale. L’ombra che portiamo in retaggio, impalpabile e nera come la morte, si animava, assumeva l’incarnato vivido, l’umido lampo che brucia nell’aspetto delle creature, si riannoda, in un soffio di rapita nostalgia, al colorito cerchio delle cose terrestri.

L’ingrediente di menzogna connaturato al dispiegamento d’ogni forma di vita: le piume variegate degli uccelli, le code iridescenti e flessuose dei pesci della Cina, l’inevitabile amplificazione perpetrata dall’arte e dalla morale. La sincerità come una specie di sfinimento.

Esistono un pensiero seduto, un pensiero in piedi, un pensiero sdraiato. Il pensiero antico è un pensiero seduto, di contemplatore in vetta a una montagna. Le filosofie moderne sono pensieri in piedi: idealismo, marxismo, pensieri d’uomini immersi nell’immanenza storica, di uomini affaccendati, impegnati nell’azione. L’esistenzialismo è un pensiero in piedi, di uomo smarrito nel labirinto, che cerca inutilmente un varco. Però soltanto il pensiero sdraiato può farci scoprire il rovescio delle cose e le contraddizioni dell’agire. Soltanto il pensiero sdraiato può consentirci di giungere alla suprema verità e giustizia dell’indifferenza, dell’astensione.

Si sa che nella vita nella mai si decide, nulla mai si risolve. Ci si cicatrizza, e si supera. Dolorando, imprecando, si sale in pallone. Su questo margine estremo, direi che si supera più rapidamente, anche se, sul momento, il dolore è acutissimo. Il pallone sale fulmineo, verticalmente. Ma la nausea è forte.

  Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper leagues – April edition!

  I noted this Thursday in the full Top 300 list: As with every year for the last 17 years, my April, May and June adjustments are casual. The July and August editions are my "audit" rankings because, thanks to the Fantasy Guide, every detail of every player within every team is analyzed top to bottom. April? Not so much. I go over every player on my spreadsheet and wipe the slate clean for the season just completed, and I make my best guess – no formulas – at how they will do next year. I tweak the 3YP, I adjust the team offense value (i.e. for Columbus I tweaked it downward because I expect them to lose a lot of offense this summer).

  What's left is that the young players improve, the older players slip (Brent Burns). The injured players get a clean slate and move up (Erik Karlsson), the over-achievers of 2018-19 move down. The late-season surges of some promising young players get a bit of a bump. Doing the April rankings are always a lot of fun. My goal is to do my best to get these as close to what I come up with in August after extensive analysis as I can. The players I'm 'way' off on I take it hard. I want to be a savant with this – I want spew out an accurate player value without doing the work (and then prove myself right after doing the work in the summer).

  As always, players between +/- 5.0 in the ratings should be considered equal. These rankings, which focus on defensemen, are simply pulled from the overall skater rankings.

Non mi ero accorta che fosse salita sul 20 dell'ora di punta. Avevo il naso ficcato nel mio libro e i sensi disinnescati per escludere il cicaleccio querulo di una signora che, a voce altissima, ci stava rendendo edotti delle disgrazie familiari, sue e di una nutrita cerchia di amici. A Porta Saragozza il bus si è svuotato come da copione (sostegno del Grande Sceneggiatore all'umana illusione che la vita sia fatta di tranquillizzanti rituali sempre uguali a se stessi, e invece no) e, mentre prendevo posto in uno degli ultimi quattro sedili, quelli che si affrontano a due a due in fondo al bus, l'ho sentita arrivare accompagnata da un rumorosissimo scartocciare, quello che producono le borse da shopping di cartone per intenderci. Solo che quello era incredibilmente più sonoro e dopo un secondo ho capito perché. Di fronte a me si è "seduta" una sportolona da shopping di cartone misura 150x95, che avrebbe potuto contenere un televisore 52 pollici o anche me stessa, non fosse stato per la sua intima vocazione comunicata attraverso una scritta (non troppo discreta) su entrambi i lati: "GUCCI", che escludeva ontologicamente il contatto con il materiale organico di scarto, tipo la sottoscritta. A seguito della sportolona di GUCCI è arrivata una signora secca e bionda, fasciata da uno spolverino di una deliziosa tonalità di blu che, dopo aver manovrato per qualche minuto il monolito griffato e la sua borsetta (anch'essa GUCCI), ha deciso alla fine che i due sedili (due) dovevano occuparli loro, mentre lei avrebbe fatto il viaggio in piedi. Ma non nel corridoio bensì eretta e svettante fra i sedili per poter custodire col suo corpo ogni eventuale aggressione ai suoi preziosi compagni di viaggio. Girata di spalle rispetto a me. Anzi, vista la posizione sopraelevata, facciamo pure girata di culo. La signora GUCCI ha quindi iniziato a parlare, con una voce frizzante e gnagnolina che solo chi frequenta GUCCI è in grado di capire. È venuto così a crearsi un contrappunto corale in cui la querula di due posti più a sinistra si è intrecciata con la briosa di fronte a me, l'una che piangeva sulle sorti del figlio della vicina di casa che doveva vendere l'azienda di famiglia perché non gliene fregava niente, l'altra che parlava di cose di altri mondi, dove esistono gli Art Director (Art Director?) di GUCCI, le commesse di GUCCI che ti fanno vedere delle cose di GUCCI diverse da quelle che volevi, ma tanto tu eri convinta e hai preso quel GUCCI che entrando avevi deciso di comprare a tutti i costi. In mezzo eravamo in tre: io (che ringraziavo Richard Matheson perché mi stava salvando la vita), il mio vicino di posto (un giovine barbuto con lo sguardo solidamente piantato sui quarti posteriori della signora GUCCI, che si indovinavano di pregevole fattura sotto le pieghe dello spolverino) e Dustin Hoffman, accompagnatore della briosa bionda che in silenzioso contegno raccoglieva le considerazione di GUCCI della compagna. Con quella faccia che accomuna uomini di ogni estrazione sociale quando sono costretti a subire l'entusiasmo della loro donna che sciorina una qualche conquista FONDAMENTALE. Per tutto il viaggio ho pensato che quello fosse Dustin Hoffman davvero. Uguale. Con il giumbottino alla Hoffman, l'occhiale da sole alla Hoffman. Cristo santo, Dustin, ma perché accompagni tua moglie da GUCCI e poi la riporti a casa con l'autobus? Mi veniva da chiedergli. A casa dove, poi? Ti sei comprato casa a Casalecchio di Reno? Fammi capire. Solo che lui a un certo punto ha detto "Stiamo per giungere in centro. Appropinquiamoci verso l'uscita." Così ha detto. E l'ha detto con un accento così poco britannico, pur nella nobiltà del vocabolario, che secondo me non era Dustin. Perciò si sono appropinquati e prima di appropinquarsi lei si è girata (finalmente) e ha detto "Vi preeeeego di perdonarmi per avervi voltato le spalle!" "Si figuri! È stato un piacere, arrivederci!" ha risposto il mio giovine vicino di posto, parlando col culo della signora. "Gnii" ho risposto io, scuotendo la testa, con quel verso che ti esce quando hai la faccia paralizzata in un sorriso cementificato dalle circostanze. Sono scesi davanti alla biblioteca. Li ho guardati mentre si allontanavano, con lui che teneva il baule di cartone da shopping GUCCI come si tiene un cane al guinzaglio. Poteva starci dentro anche un levriero, in effetti. Comunque hanno viaggiato senza biglietto.
