Spotted Lady Beetle (Coleomegilla maculata) in Pinery Provincial Park, May 2017. This is a perfect example of why Common names are not as useful as Scientific names are. "Spotted Lady Beetle" could describe many of the more than 6000 species included in the Lady Beetle family, Coccinellidae. Taken on 2020 6th October while on my Iowa hitch with @americanconservationexperience, I found another lady beetle on the same day, this one being the spotted pink ladybeetle (Coleomegilla maculata). They are most recognized for being an essential biological control of all sorts of crop pests due to being present wherever there is prey, such as aphids. Spotted Lady Beetle (Coleomegilla maculata) in Lambton Shores, October 2018. Both as adults and larvae, these Lady Beetles consume pollen from flowers, which can sometimes make up 50% of their diet. Other foods include aphids, mites, and insect eggs.
