How To Choose The Best Type Of Pallet Rack Wire Decking For Your Needs
Why spend more for premium pallets if the storage system can be improved with extra pallet rack wire decking? A lighter-duty pallet or a less expensive container might just be as effective with the necessary pallet rack wire decking.
While the beams in your pallet racking system are strong enough to support your pallets, having an extra horizontal decking support increases storage flexibility and also allows you to store palletized and non-palletized items.
Pallet rack decking come in various forms, such as solid wood, metal panels, or steel wire decking.
Of these, pallet rack wire decking is the most popular choice in the warehouse industry.
What Is Pallet Rack Wire Decking?
A pallet rack wire decking is made of welded steel mesh. Channel supports are welded under it and run across opposite beams to help distribute pallet weight to the beams. The wire deck rests on the beam and the channel supports.
Wire decking reduces the risk of falling materials or the fall of poorly positioned pallets.
It improves storage flexibility by allowing non-standard loads that would otherwise not fit in an open rack system.
Wire decking minimizes dirt and debris from accumulating – it is maintenance-free. The galvanized finish is corrosion resistant. No tools are needed for installation – simply drop the decking into place.
Wire decks are preferred over solid steel decks or flat wooden decks when it comes to fire regulation compliance. In case of an emergency, water from sprinklers easily flow through the mesh. Also, wire decking improves ventilation and lighting inside your warehouse improving efficiency and productivity.
Factors To Know First-Hand When Looking For Pallet Rack Wire Decking
Mesh Size
Are you storing full-size pallets, individual parts or stacked containers? Most decks use 2”x4” or 2.5”x4.5” grid size. Finer grid sizes are more suitable, however, for manually handled containers or for smaller items. If so, consider finer than standard grid or mesh size, e.g. 1”x2” or 1”x4”. This means that the top wires (those in contact with the stored material) are only an inch apart and are sufficiently small enough to handle small containers.
Weight
The steel channel supports welded to the bottom of wire decks provide strength – they supply the load bearing capacity. With a 3-channel support, small and mid-size decks can provide the standard 2500-lb capacity.
Unless designed to be so, wire decking is not meant to carry the full load of the products stored on it. Otherwise, wire decking can warp or collapse and pose a safety risk. Wire diameter, mesh size and channel thickness overall determine load bearing capacity of wire decking.
Environment
Presence of moisture and oxidation are primary concerns when choosing the surface finish for any wire decking. For outdoor applications, the Electro-galvanized finish is recommended for great weather resistance. Powder-coated finish suffices for indoor and less harsh conditions.
Channel supports (Wire Decking)
Channel supports run across opposite beams to help distribute pallet weight to the beams. Step channel supports provide greater strength than flanged. For applications like in the food industry, debris buildup is a concern. Here, inverted channels are preferred. [See next Section for wire decking design variations.]
Waterfalls (Wire Decking)
Waterfall wire decks fix into place by cascading over the front and back of the beam. Waterfalls, as a standard, are designed to be at 1.5” width. However, if there is intent to put labels (barcodes, SKUs) on the beam, the waterfall size may be reduced to 1” or no waterfall. It is always safer to have a waterfall. Some prefer the rear waterfall up as a stopper to prevent materials from falling off while keeping the front waterfall down.
Types Of Pallet Rack Wire Decking And Common Uses
Wire deck design has several variations:
Standard/ Step – waterfall design falling over the top of the beam; has a standard U-Channel to fit common step beams
Flared Channel – waterfall wraps around the beam with flared flange at either end. The flared flange allows decks to be used with box or structural beams.
Inside Waterfall – Inside waterfall. Leaves beam face unobstructed for labels and barcodes
Inverted Channels – With upside down channel supports. Designed to prevent deposit of dirt and debris inside the channel. Commonly used in facilities that store food products and other sensitive materials.
Drop-in/ Flush – Straight wires are hidden and fit snuggly but without the waterfall feature that wraps around the rack beam. Designed for hand-stacked loads and order picking; fits inside load beams.
Up-turned Waterfall – With upturned waterfall decks the wires are bent upward to help secure your load. Built-in back stop to prevent product from being pushed too far.

Material Handling Equipment: Why Steel Containers
As you can imagine, there are several ways to move, stack, carry, store and prep material when deciding upon the correct material handling equipment. This may seem a bit more simplistic than it is but, in general, it takes a lot of consideration when creating the specific product material flow. Additionally, there are a lot of choices when it comes to the equipment used to move material, store it and potentially assemble it.
Material handling equipment can be any apparatus that helps move, store, protect and even control material. The options seem limitless.
Categories of Material Handling Equipment
There are four generalized categories of material handling equipment. The first is wire container. Generally, it consists of the JP wire containers and EU mesh containers.
The next category of material handling equipment is any roll container.
The third category of material handling equipment consists of pallet containers.
The last material handling equipment category refers to storage racking systems.
Determining the Right Container for Material Handling
When companies purchase containers for material handling, they tend to shop based on container type, size and availability. The size of the container depends on required holding capacity and the footprint of shop storage space. This is generally the starting point for many purchasing departments who receive specifications from their shop personnel for container use.
Pallet racks have played an essential role in maximizing storage capacity at warehouses and distribution centers for decades. An important part of industrial pallet racking design is the selection of rack decking, which acts as a base for storing cases or non-palletized items in conjunction with palletized products. By increasing the number of contact points between the product being stored and the storage media, decking reduces the chance of products falling – increasing overall warehouse safety. Naturally, not all decking solutions are created equal. One of the most versatile and popular choices, and the topic of this article, is wire decking.
If you’ve decided wire decking is the best option for your warehouse or distribution center, you still need to decide which options will work best. Below are 4 things to consider when selecting the best wire decking for your application.
1. What are you storing?
The most important factors when selecting wire decking are the weights and overall dimensions of the products that will be stored on it. Unless specifically designed to do so, wire decking is not intended to support the full weight of a pallet (point load) and can warp or collapse under the pressure. This creates a significant safety risk and is one of the most common mistakes we see in the field.
2. How will you be using your wire decking?
Will you be storing full pallets, individual pieces of equipment, or loose cases? Pallet racking can accommodate all the above, but it is important you consider the overall use of decking in your design. One very common use of wire decking is the storage of individual cases. Some companies refer to this as “hand stack”. If this is your intended use, you should consider increasing the density of the wire mesh grid. Standard grid densities are typically 2”x4”, 2.4”x4” or 2.5”x4.5”. When “hand stacking,” consider selecting a grid size of 1”x2” or 1”x4”. There are also design enhancements that can be incorporated into wire decking to help with your specific application. For example, the 90-degree turn at the front and rear edges of the wire deck, called waterfalls, can be configured upwards to help prevent products from sliding off the deck. There are also different accessories like dividers that clip onto the wire deck itself to help with organization. If your intended use is order picking, you could also consider sloping the wire decking to make it easier to access products.
3. In what type of storage media will the wire decking be going?
Are these wire decks for bulk shelving or pallet box? If the answer is pallet racking, is it roll-formed or structural? Manufacturers can differ slightly on the overall dimensions of their beams (horizontal members) and uprights (vertical members), so it’s important to check the sizing to ensure a good fit. Bastian Solutions has many years of experience working with all pallet racking manufacturers and can help in this selection process.
4. In what environment will the wire decking be going?
Is the wire decking going into a freezer or cooler? Will it be stored outside or in a facility where food is present? In most applications, a standard paint finish of backed on or powder coated enamel is fine. However, in environments where moisture or oxidation are concerns, galvanized or stainless steel should be considered.
Another consideration is whether wire deck channels should be inverted or flipped upside down. By inverting the wire decking channel, you can help mitigate the buildup of moisture, dust, dirt and other debris. This practice is commonly found in the food storage industry to promote a cleaner environment.

Illyria’s Sanctum.
During the industrial boom, the building was one of a few dozen warehouses and production facilities in the area – today, like almost all of its’ kin it has long since been foreclosed upon and abandoned to the weather and time. Many of the buildings in the abandoned warehouse district on the outskirts of the burrough have been taken over by rodents, wildlife, or reclaimed by weeds and fauna, but every once in a while there is one that has an occupant or huddle of occupants of the bipedal sort. This particular warehouse was once a food processing factory; long since stripped of all equipment and anything with copper content or wiring or any other sort of possible salvage value, it has been empty for many years, falling into a quiet state of disarray and decay. Most of the outside windows have been shattered or merely fractured under the weight of the slowly settling building and the weather, and most of the doors and the fire escape that led to the second floor of the warehouse have been rusted open, or closed, or askew, and in general, the place gives off the general air of a decrepit shell, slowly twisting in on itself.
While there appears to be around half a dozen points of entry into the warehouse, depending on one’s size and agility, upon closer examination most of the windows and the one or two doorways accessible have been blocked by collapsed rubble inside the warehouse, leaving the broken skylight on the roof, or a well rusted door at the back of the building as entrance ways into the building. Roof access leads to a few remaining catwalks that stretch from the maintenance chutes that once controlled power and lighting and heat and air for the building, long since rotted to disrepair by the weather, and down to the second floor which served as a single wall of offices during the life of the warehouse. A few pieces of furniture, a dented filing cabinet, a well worn mattress long mildewed are all that are found on the upper floor, before two metal staircases lead down to what was the production floor. The doorway on the ground floor leads, after a few detours through the front offices and shipping center, to the same floor area.
The outer areas of the warehouse floor show a great deal of wear and tear from the elements, the wildlife and what might have been a few overly exuberant attempts at a rave in its day, but for the most part it seemed to have not been disturbed much in recent years. As one observes the center part of the room, however, there seems to be some signs of habitation, as more often than not the low flicker of candlelight can be seen from the central area of the warehouse; a walled off area in the middle of the room that was an attempt to buffer some of the sound from the machines that once resided inside of it. The sheeting of the ceiling is opaque and has been thinly painted with a myriad of shades of blue and purple, creating an interesting effect on the room when the natural sun or moonlight strikes the light from above, casting the entire room and its’ contents in a myriad of hues of indigo and blue. It is immediately clear upon entering this inner sanctum that the warehouse has been claimed, though by what would be uncertain to most. The most prominent feature in the center of the room is that of a large stone sarcophagus set on a dais of salvaged pallets, around which and on have been collected years worth of candle residue, currently used candles, and throughout the occasional piece of bone, spine, horn or other ‘trophy’ can be seen.
Surrounding the dais are a number of wooden crates and cardboard boxes, in randomly shuffled order against the walls and scattered about, some of which are still packed neatly and sealed, but many of which are half-emptied with their contents stacked in just as seemingly random piles. Stacks of books on every subject ranging from anatomy, physiology, psychology, flora and fauna, supernatural lore and ancient mystical texts, languages and compendiums, candles, and the random artifact add to the clutter which includes clothes, of both male and female variety, the occasional knick-knack, an old photo album and even some household furniture tucked under and around the piles of belongings. (To those that might recognize them, the items are those that were salvaged from Fred’s apartment and office, and Wes’ apartment.) To add to the somewhat bizarre collection of items, stacks and racks of weapons are prominent, almost all of them of the melee variety, ranging from axes, swords, daggers, to the occasional steel mesh netting, or makeshift weapons such as a crowbar, or a hand crafted boomerang, etc. The inner walls of the room are not bare; every inch of their surface and the pillars in the middle of the room are coated with a mixture of dull and sleek paint, an odd combination of textures that somehow seem to create an illusion of vast depth within the room especially given the theme of the room wide mural – space. A unique, shimmering purple-blue void that stretches on as far as the eye can see and beyond, scattered with nebulae and brightened with stars.

Witch
(Cause @red-sterling mentioned it and my mind went WILD)
There's a deep restlessness in his gut, a twisting wiggling thing that spoke in verbatim imitations of tongues and breaths taken from other people and spiked up against the frail undertones of his ribs like it wants to rip out from under his skin and devour him with sharp needled teeth. He didn't choose this, this way of life but has learned to accept living so deep in the woods with dirt under his nails.
His heart however? It was easy to keep at bay, the itch of its claws under his sternum, clawing ever so gently at the thrumming organ keeping his body ever so alive even when the people of his old home thought of him as dead, distance from the town he adored made it screech under his pulse point and stab into his lungs, but being near kept in sated like the animal it was, melting into hibernation in the pit where his organs were meshed together like a mess.
Red was a beast in himself, curled and sprung tight like a wire ready to snap and tear his maws into whatever feeble fleshed human cowered in his blood craved hunt. He never hurt people, he couldn't. The students, most died from the ferals in the woods, he remembers one named Green who was a sweet girl. She remembered him, brought him food sometimes but she was too scared to return to civilization. She lived close to Viridian forest's border by his woods, he directed her to Yellow. She would be safe there.
Chattering softly to the woods, his only true connection to the earth he could hear the pipes that were laid down years ago and it sounds like chittering metals being rubbed together, a deep bodied chill that crawls like little footed bugs under your skin. But the scratching thrum of whatever it was taking home in his gut where, as humans called it, the ‘butterflies, formed. It was pestering, a need never to be sated unless he fully delved into it’s deep desires, to curl into bodied warmth and divulge into a long session of cafune. He heard footsteps and his stomach dropped.
The stranger looked at his direction, half lidded and warm though distress was in his bright ocean eyes, a bag strapped to his cloak with an Eevee perched on his shoulder. From the top of the wooded hill Pikachu squealed, running out to greet the Pallet born and his pokemon. The stranger smiled, Red's stomach fluttered.
"Hello little guy, Pikachus aren't found this deep." He crooned, petting down Pikachu's fur as he looked around "I think I'm lost, you know how to get out of here?" His soft pink lips frowned when Pikachu shook his head. He looked away, pink cheeked under his fur cloak.
It bothered him sometimes, the feeling, because it grew. It blows into proportions that matches his true form more than the human body he was born with before he fell cursed in this… Blaire witch existence, large with gnashing teeth demanding of him. At first he thought about going to this stranger, but when he barely brushed his hand against the pale skin wrapped around the stranger's delicately scarred wrist he felt the beast null. Collapse into itself and purr throatily, that turned into a deep growl in unhidden contemptuous emotions when he tugged his hand away from the stranger's wrist as if he was burned. Blue looked around, eyes wide, fearful before relaxing, dropping down with a frown as he watched the ground darken with foreboding nightfall.
He looked at the bag, reading a name on it.
"Blue."
He likes that name.
He had been avoiding this stranger, avoiding the smell of shampoo and dust and the fragile scent of something maple that burned and his organs clench each time his attempts to flee are seen and not ridiculed but looked at almost forlornly. Blue didn't know if he was a skittish pokemon or the witched beast he truly is. He missed the times back when he was a child and not… This. Innocent Red vanished not long after he got his first pokemon. Red lived here now. Alone.
He would have liked the silence a lot more. He kept to himself though, feeling the writhing thing of inopportune feelings slithering in his veins and head, and stayed in the trees. Blue never knew he was there, and he had no heart to scare the lost stranger to leave.
He still stares out the treeline, waiting for the falling sun to fixate on an area of the woodlands still lush with frivolous life that refused to stop crawling up the stumps. He will wait, and wait, and wait, and hear the bag open and watch Blue easily slip into the coat with ease. He would wear gloves, there was never a time where he wouldn't he guesses in this winter weather, and gently rubbed his thumb along the thick white of Eevee's fur, inspecting, sometimes tugging away a falling out, or ticked, from its brothers and toss it before going to the next one. He never needs gloves for that, Red knows, he did it fir his Pokemon without them. He watched as Blue ran a hand through his hair that sparkled somewhat in the dewy sunset before reaching out to Pikachu.
"Ah." He breathed out, soft and warm under his cloak, his heart warmed.
Pikachu was feral now, feral as can be with a cursed witch as a trainer, a cautious mouse to things it considers a threat. Yet, he purred under Blue's careful touch, like how he purred to him when they would all curl up in the makeshift bed. Blue's nose turned soft red in the chilly cold, that reminded him of the bushels of roses he used to steal from a Pallet house years prior, he'd leave them at the house of the Professor. He heard that he had a grandson who was deathly ill. He hoped he got them. He waited, and watched Blue’s hands work to an even softer beat when he grazed his fingers over Pikachu's ears and watched more until he noticed the upturn of Blue's locks and breathed, unblinking when his eyes were locked to Blue's.
Even at the distance he noticed the light hitting Blue’s eyes in just the right way, mixing the dark bleak blackness with a light color of ocean hues. He watched, with an intrantment matching that of a child looking at something shiny, and blinked when Blue moved his hand from the yellow mouse in his lap. Blue rested his hand against his chest and stared for a moment longer before dropping back to his own fluffy pokemon.
"I'm ok Vee, just thought I saw something."
Red blinked, the beast only slightly sated from the attention before clawing at the muscle of his esophagus. He went back to staring idly into the space of his temporary wooded abode, thoughts twisting and pulling at his form until he decidedly slipped out of the brush. The light was still in violent reds and oranges, making the green leaves change to brown and it gave him time to think about just how long he hid up there. He winced when he reached the ground, the cold of the woods slipping into his toes. But he continued and turned on his heel, slipping into the bushline with practiced quiet ease.
His gift through his curse, he supposes, of being a wood bound witch.
“Did you know…,” Blue started, speaking lowly as if Pikachu was a frightened animal “In Johto Myth, the rainbow feather is bonded to love and foreverment?” His hands were raised, still gloved, cradling a mewling Eevee and a crooked Pikachu. The mouse made a sound, and Blue continued.
“The origin of the name was said to have come from a young man whose ardour to his Love ended in a tragedy,” Red closed his eyes and breathed, smelling the soft undertones of fruits, “The young man was named not, lost in time, but from what we know out of sheer determination to see his love swam the Hellespont every night.” He took another step, and he could hear Blue sway in his spot.
“In one dreadful night however, while trying to reach a feather of the plant for his Love, he drowned and so the sweet tryst of the lover ended. In the morning, his precious love longing for him can be seen shouting and with such forlorn cried “O Love!”, “O Love!”-” He could touch Blue’s gloved hand if he reached, he took another step “-in the banks until finally he was found and clasped in his hands were the feathers who had became a symbol of everlasting love, crushed in the hands of time.”
He was almost pressed completely against the tree Blue was leaned against and raised his hand. He could feel Blue’s subtle shift, his lips pressing lightly against his wrist as he smiled "Now the lake of which those feathers were found were named the Lake of Rage, in memory of the Lover who cried out in angered anguish for the loss of their love." Blue looked calm, serene, glowing slightly from the setting sun.
He reached, brushing his fingers against the side of Blue's hand. Pikachu 'cha'ed happily and scrambled out of Blue's hold to hop around the tree onto Red's fur coat.
Blue turned, watching the empty space with wide eyes. He blinked, eyes wide before standing up with Eevee on his shoulder. "Guess the Pikachu left. Sorry Vee."
Red stood in a tree a distance away, pulling back his hood to press his fingers against his lips, his pinks felt red.
The beast purred contently.
His heart felt light.

How to Ensure Quality and Durability with Industrial Rack Manufacturers
Industrial rack storage systems are an integral part of all warehouses and industries. Selecting the right racking system depends on the type of business and the company's requirements. As not all warehouse storage systems are the same, it is important to look at the different options and find the warehouse racking that works best for your kind of business.

Warehouse and industrial storage racks play an important role in material handling, space utilization, and transportation of goods. Heavy-duty industrial storage racks are the backbone of many warehousing operations. Selection of the best industrial rack manufacturers for your business is the most important role and the preference can differ in terms of goods that you are going to store and handle.
Different industrial storage rack manufacturers are available in the market like pallet racks, flow racks, and pushback racks which are suitable for warehouse storage systems where goods can be stored both in vertical and horizontal patterns.
Metsto manufactures the high-quality industrial racks according to the industrial standards. The durability of industrial racking systems is a major concern for all types of racking systems. A pallet racking system has always been a major concern over other types of racking systems. Pallet racking systems are most preferred in warehouse racking, where a huge number of cargos, goods, and materials are transported very often. Loading and unloading of the cargo are the major processes that ensure the safety and durability of industrial warehouse maintenance.
Things to ensure with Industrial storage rack manufacturers:
It is very much important to consider the type of material used in the construction of industrial racks. Usually, industrial storage rack manufacturers prefer strong metals like Stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium are used in these manufacturing of racks that are stronger and heavy-duty materials that can withstand any temperature conditions and loads. When the customer wishes for lightweight and less durable materials alternative sources like wood, fiber plastics, metal sheets, etc, for rack manufacturing can be taken into consideration.
Heavy-duty industrial racks are designed to carry medium to heavy items that are stored. Heavy-duty pallet racks are designed with a focus on efficiency, durability, and support to maintain space-saving storage. These racking systems are adjustable and can accommodate additional storage areas. The durability of racks depends on the safety accessories that are used and installed in the racking system. The most common aspect to ensure durability and safety with industrial rack manufacturers are the accessories that are used while installation like safety bars, safety beams, safety netting, wire mesh deck, etc.
Safety bars are added to the racks to prevent the fall of the rack and materials that are stored. These bars are connected from the front and back of cross beams. Safety beam clips are found in the pallet racking system that creates a safer connection between the frame that uses a safety drop pin as a universal safety precaution. Netting is made up of materials like nylon or plastic mesh-like materials and is placed in the back of the rack system to protect goods from falling. Most industrial storage rack manufacturers use wire decks with support channels that are welded on the bottom of the rack for increased load capacity.
