the funniest subset of people in british politics are ‘people who are indifferent to republicanism so long as the queen is alive but as soon as charles takes the throne will become ardent republicans’

#personal crap #political crap #my parents firmly fall into that #and i do a bit #mostly bc i see monarchy vs republic as kind of a semantic battle in a lot of ways #compared to battles like hypercapitalism vs socialism and 'social conservatism' (read: bigotry) vs social liberalism #where there are huge unavoidable consequences for one side coming out on top #i don't see much difference between an absolute monarch and an autocratic president #or between a constitutional monarchy and a democratic republic #i mostly just hate charles and don't want him to have power even as a figurehead
