Wes Peden, juggler: Zebra, London International Mime Festival

Recognised as one of the most innovative jugglers ever, American Wes Peden – who comes from Rochester, New York – has been voted the world’s most popular juggler nine times. His father, Jeff Peden, taught him to juggle when he was five, and they started performing together when Wes was eleven. At 14, he won the gold medal in the International Juggling Association Juniors Championship. He went on to study at the Dance and Circus University in Stockholm from 2007-2010. Wes holds countless juggling world records, won a bronze medal at the 33rd Cirque de Demain festival in Paris, and has appeared internationally from Tokyo to Broadway, including before the King and Queen of Sweden, and at Perlan glacier museum in Iceland.

Based in Stockholm, Wes tours his solo shows and gives masterclasses. UK audiences may have seen him in Water on Mars by Plastic Boom – the company he formed with Tony Pezzo and Patrik Elmnert – and his sizzling guest spot in Gandini Juggling and Alexander Whitley’s Spring. He now returns to the UK, bringing his solo show, Zebra, to the 44th London International Mime Festival. It runs at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room from 24-26 January 2020. Wes chats to Liz Arratoon from Helsinki, while rehearsing for an opera.

The Widow Stanton: What is the opera you’re working on? Wes Peden: It’s a circus opera, CircOpera. They’ve written a story that uses some classic opera songs and lots of different circus disciplines to try to have, like, a fun way to introduce kids and families and people that might not necessarily go to see a traditional opera to the art form.

Do you find that your juggling work is combining more with other art forms now? Well, I definitely get inspired by other art forms and it’s very often when I’m in group shows it’s not just other jugglers, you know. Gandini has worked with many other types of dance, and I’ve been in shows that have theatre in them or other circus disciplines, and I definitely get inspired by the type of music in the show. For example, opera music, I’m performing to a soloist playing Flight of the Bumblebee on a tuba. That kind of inspires a different sort of juggling than I would ever do on my own. So, definitely.

Let’s go back to the beginning; is or was your dad a professional juggler? Yeah, he still does perform quite a bit. Before we were juggling together he was already doing about 100 shows a year. When I started getting more and more into juggling we created a duet show, and were performing that for a few years, with many shows around the east coast of the States.

Did it come naturally to you as a kid or was it just a lot of hard work? Kind of both. I felt like I had a natural talent for it in one way and it made it not feel like work. When you’re young and you learn some things, it doesn’t seem so surprising that you can’t… you don’t get embarrassed that you can’t do anything at all. You can’t juggle, but you can’t ride a bike either. It’s all normal. There are many things you can’t do at that age. Also I was dyslexic and asthmatic, so school was very difficult because of my dyslexia and sport was hard because of my asthma, but then juggling, I was like, ‘Oh, here I am at least on an equal playing field as everybody else’. Having limitations in those other areas kind of pushed me to follow my skill in the juggling world.

How would you describe your juggling style? The main thing that defines me is that the reason I juggle is to create new tricks, new forms of juggling and to try to make something that someone has never seen before within the juggling world. I want people to come out of my show thinking: “I’ve never seen anything like that. I didn’t know juggling could be like that. Those were some tricks I didn’t imagine would ever be possible.” Because I was lucky enough to juggle for many, many years – 24 years I’ve been practising – I had a lot of time to build a lot of technique. I had a lot of skill with many different props so I try to make these new ideas as technically advanced as I can, to use my full energy and my full skill to make as high-quality new ideas as possible. But what defines my style is creative and new shapes but still a really high skill level.

Were you inspired by any of the great jugglers from the past? Absolutely. I watch juggling constantly to get inspired by things that have happened already and by what elements I can see, like, ‘Oh, what made that trick so special? What’s important about this juggler’. There are a few jugglers of more recent years, because juggling is still quite young, so lots of the important jugglers are really not that old, they’re still alive. There’s Kris Kremo, who does incredible stuff with balls and hats that really inspires me, and another is Sean McKinney.

I saw him when I was nine years old at this competition where everyone was performing with, like, jazz music, in a vest [waistcoat], kind of in this Kris Kremo-type old-school way but at this time everything was a little stricter for no real reason, and then this guy comes skateboarding on to the stage in jeans and a T-shirt and does incredible new beautiful kind of punk juggling. I was like, ‘What is this guy?’ and he inspired me that juggling didn’t have to be done in just one way. It didn’t have to have a certain aesthetic, that it was broader than I’d ever imagined. So when I saw him at that young age I was like, ‘OK, juggling isn’t this, juggling is whatever you want it to be’.

When you’re creating intricate patterns and sequences how do you plan them? There are certain aspects of juggling that you can do best on paper, for me anyway, and certain aspects that you have to be literally trying it to see what works, where the momentum is and how fast you can move or what makes sense with the flow of where the catches are. So it’s a combination of both. It will often be that I’m working on a trick and then I realise something about it, ‘Oh, the momentum of this part makes me want to throw the ball round there’. I film it on my phone and next time I’m on a plane or a train I look at the videos and ‘OK, now I realise that new aspect of the trick’. I will write down many ideas of how to twist that or expand a new idea. Then next time I’m in training I’ll look at my notebook and try all those new things, film them, so it kind of bounces back and forth between literally work in the studio to see how you body and objects work best together and then more, like, academic work back in the office or while I’m travelling.

You have so many records; it’s not about numbers but how many of each prop do you juggle? [Laughs] I have some, but to tell you the truth, it gets a little bit tiring, like, trying to add just one more ball or one more club. I might have invented the most five-club tricks that have ever existed but I don’t juggle the greatest number of clubs that has ever been done. I perform seven clubs and seven balls but I try to… yeah… OK, to be able to juggle seven, eight, nine balls you need speed and accuracy and dedication, and how many hours would I need to put in to add one more ball? That would give one image and it would be amazing, but if I took all of those hours and that dedication and then added my creativity to it and instead used that time to try to make something that no one has ever gone for before.

Up until I was, like, 16 or 17, I was going after just the hardest trick, the biggest trick, the most clubs and after I went to circus university and had more classes in dance and composition I started banging my time and my skill more into composing things that are a little bit harder to put your finger on, because when someone says: “How many of this can you juggle,” it’s easier to compute than, ‘Well, I’ve developed this new technique where rings spiral around my arms in hundreds of different ways. By the time you see the end of the piece you’ll have a whole new vision of how things work. It’s a bit harder to envision, but you have to come to see the show’. [Laughs]

Do you prefer one prop to another? It depends. When I was young I absolutely preferred clubs, like, clubs are the way to be, they can flip this way, the other, rotate, roll… there are many options with them. Then when I started to learn a bit more about how to move my body, I got more interested with balls because you can use them to go around your body, they’re easier going down to the floor and back up. And now I can kind see every prop for what they are good at and if I have an idea of one way of using juggling, like, ‘Oh, this new cross-armed behind-the-neck idea’, what prop will work in that idea best? So now my juggling is more about concepts and then I pull whichever object works with that concept the best. I see them all now like different colours for a painter, whatever is most suitable for this next painting.

What is the best tip you could give to a kid just starting to juggle? I would say to remember that you don’t need three balls to juggle, you can start with one, or any object and try to invent a trick that is fun; something that you think is cool to do. Maybe take your shoe and throw it up and clap behind your back and you catch it again. Or maybe you can set up some spoons on the table and flip one with the other… not to think that juggling is just getting three balls in the air. Juggling is just a relationship between you and objects and making fun tricks that express yourself. I’d say, make sure you’re having fun and, you know, keep going. You will teach yourself as you invent things and gradually build skill. But always make sure you’re having fun.

You mentioned circus university, why did you choose DOCH? I was watching lots of juggling videos and different jugglers from around the world and trying to figure out where they all came from and who taught them and where their different styles were developed, and I realised a lot of my favourite jugglers were from Sweden, or Denmark, or Finland. And then I found out that a bunch of them were going to this school, DOCH. The head teacher at the time was Jay Gilligan, who is a very great juggler; a very clever guy in the modern world of juggling. That was it, ‘I already know his work, I want to juggle like the other guys, so let’s go there and study’.

What did it add to your already considerable skills? When I got to the school Jay explained to me: “OK, we have three years to juggle. We're going to be spending the first year developing your technique and making sure you understand everything you can about literal juggling; the tossing, the throwing, making sure everything is clean. The second year we're gonna teach you how to compose, which will not necessarily have anything to do with throwing and catching.” There were certain things when I was supposed to make an interesting routine while holding a watering can, which I wasn't allowed to throw or catch. You have to forget about your skill as a juggler and just use your creativity to make something good without skill. So for a year I did many different composition exercises, like, 'OK, make 100 tricks in 15 minutes'. You’re like, ‘Uhh!’. It really works your brain in the same way that juggling in previous years had worked my muscles and my muscle memory.

And then in the third year you use your skills developed in the first two, you combine your juggling skill, your composition, you figure out what you want to express and put those skills to work in something from yourself. I think that is the main difference between juggling just on your own and going to a school and having someone make you do composition exercises that really got out the creative side of me and let me develop something that was unique to me.

What happened to Plastic Boom? The trio performed quite a bit together and then had a contract working in Vegas on a show. The others have stayed there but I got a replacement for my part so I could continue to do my own full shows and live a more artistic career, so we've kind of split ways a little bit.

Are you affiliated with Gandini Juggling? When they first started to make Spring, me and the two other jugglers from Plastic Boom, all three of us were going to be in the show, but then when we got the offer for the show in Vegas, it kind of was hard to organise with the creation time period of Spring so we jumped out of the project. But then when I wanted to leave Vegas I was partially in the Spring show. I’m good friends with Sean [Gandini], we really share similar visions of why we like juggling, where it can go. We both have energy to develop the art form constantly and now they are my producers.

Did winning a medal in Paris help you? Yes, it did. In a way, my life is kind of a balance of performing in other group shows, like what I’m in now in Helsinki, and doing my own solo work. And after doing Cirque de Demain I got offers doing some varieté theatre in Germany, where I worked two months a year for a few years. Always while I was just doing an act in another show it gave me an opportunity to be in the same place for a couple of months and really work on the stuff that would be in my next show. In happenstance, after Paris, I got booked for one show in Germany, and I had a huge apartment for that show in the theatre, with a high ceiling, so every day I would spend six or seven hours working on all this new juggling that is now in Zebra. So everything kind of connects… win that, get a good space to juggle, make the juggling for the next show that starts to tour.

Tell us about Zebra. Zebra was kind of a balance based on a show I’d done previously called Volcano VS Palm Tree, which was very explosive and kind of chaotic, and I wanted something more precise where every place my arm was put, every step, every throw was perfectly organised and a bit more, yeah, very, very precise. So this show is about that, and composing juggling with normal juggling objects but in such a way that it doesn’t look like traditional juggling. Let me explain that a bit. For example, there’s a part where I juggle balls where the rule of the whole piece is that it has to be ball juggling where everything is bouncing off my arms. I’ve composed that and developed it over a few years so that by the time you’re a few minutes into the piece it stops to look like ball juggling and starts to look just like elbow bouncing and kind of this new family, this new language of ways of working… to keep it really specific like that.

There’s a piece with five clubs where I’m facing away from the audience and the light is just above my head, so I’ve made the juggling where the only part of it that matters is what’s in the air and you start to forget that I’m throwing and catching and there’s any skill involved because it’s made around watching these waves, or these triangles or these shapes transform into different constellations. So trying to remove the idea of you’re watching it to be impressed and more that you’re watching an idea unfold and evolve and focus more on the content of the ideas within the juggling. In the way you watch a dancer, you’re not, like, ‘Wow, look how high they jump’, but you’re following the idea of what the choreographer is making onstage.

It sounds fantastic! You’ve performed in London before, but how do you feel about being in the Mime Festival? I’m very excited to be there. Whenever I’m in a festival and can look at all the other shows in the programme and think, ‘I want to go to every single one of these’, I feel at home, and think, ‘Great! I’m in a like-minded space. I’m really happy that my juggling is fitting into a world that I made it for, and I know that the type of audience that goes to these types of shows will see the juggling in the same way that I do’. And I really think that’s it’s a good home for the show. I’m very happy to be part of it.

Can pick out, from your lengthy career, any particular highlights? I really remember the first time I performed Zebra was in Paris. I’d been working on it for a few years and I really wasn’t sure how it would go, because I was like, ‘Are the people going to respond to this? I’m trying to make something quite different. Is it going to work the same way for them as I see it?’, because sometimes when you’re in your own work for too long, you can’t see it anymore from someone’s eye that’s never seen it before and yeah, when I came offstage and everything had gone so well…

I was also very nervous because the show was all run on vinyl records; there are times when I’m like, throwing them, and bouncing them and if I break one, that’s it. That’s my little twist on the idea of jugging being dangerous, because it’s often dangerous for the juggler, juggling chainsaws or whatever, and now I try to work very closely with the objects and I want to do juggling that a ball would want to do. Or if I was a record, how would I like to be juggled? And now there is danger for the object [laughs]… it could break, and danger for the entire show. But it went OK, I didn’t get so nervous that I broke a record. It went great. That was one of the best feelings I’ve had.

I also make juggling films. I often work for a few years at a time making juggling films that are kind of like skate films, where I collect the coolest tricks and find themes to edit them around and I release those every couple of years for the juggling community. My most recent one is called Gumball, which people can see pieces of on YouTube. When I released that it had been in the works for almost three years and that was one of my highlights that I could make film-specific juggling and had a lot of tricks that I’d never seen done ever before. Yeah, it was like a big expression of who I am and this is how I believe it can be and, here we go, I hope you like it. Sending something like that out to the world feels great.

11 Tips For College Students

I’m not currently a college student. Haven’t been one for awhile…at least in the undergraduate sense of things. But I hang out with college students, they are always looking for college help.

I work with college students. And I work full time at a University as the Director of Campus Life (the coolest on-campus job in the world).

Plus…I really like college students.

It’s one of the greatest times in life. When do any of us ever get to hang out with hundreds of friends for four, five…dare I say…six years? It’s like going to camp..except they give you homework and you have to read 800 pages a night.

So if I could sit you down, with a slow drip of coffee being shared between us (intravenously or by the cupful if you prefer), and share some ways that I believe you could not only make the most of your time in college, but really, really enjoy it and succeed at it – here’s what I’d say…

1. Meet people.

One day you’ll walk across a stage, and a very smart looking man or woman in a really nice, long, black gown will hand you a piece of paper that says “Bachelor” (even if you’re a girl!) on it. You’ll graduate from college. Do you know what you’ll remember most?

The relationships you’ve made.

My advice is to meet everyone you can. Be friendly. Smile. Talk to people (not in class…that could be dangerous). Go to places where people hang out and hang out with them. Your friends are what make college special. Some day you’ll come back to campus as an alumni and the place will feel weird. It will feel different. That’s because all of the people that you were friends with during your college years aren’t there. It’s the same college, but different people. It’s the people that make your experience unique. You are going to make friends that you’ll have for the rest of your life. Like I said earlier, I work at a University. My boss (yes…he’s smarter than me) is a good friend that I went to college all four years with. It’s been a great relationship for all this time. I don’t know of any other place you create these types of relationships at this age. So get out there. Get busy meeting people.

2. Talk to your professors.

This one continues on with the theme of number 1. Go ahead and do everything you can to meet your professors. Make an appointment with them as soon as it is possible in their schedule. I have discovered that I learned so much more from a professor when I had some kind of personal relationship with them. Professors are people to. Respect their time and make sure you communicate clearly with them. Don’t waste their time with excuses for not doing the work or simply not showing up to class. The goal here is to establish some type of relationship. Whenever I think about a subject or content I learned in college it is tied to the face of a professor. If I think of learning German – it’s McKinney; if it’s creative writing – Nelson; if it’s communication – Jackson. My knowledge came from a person more than it came from a book. One of my favorite movies is Orange County. It’s a story about a high school senior that wants to get into Stanford. He’s enamored with the writings of a certain professor there. When he finally has the chance to meet the professor and sit down and talk with him, it changes his entire perspective. While those types of conversations might be rare in your experience because you go to a large University – seek them out anyway! They’ll be some of the best memories you take from your time in college.

3. If you need help ask for it.

One of the reasons you’re in college is because you don’t know everything. If you can learn to admit that, you’ll be ahead of most freshmen at your school. Independence messes up most teenagers in that they want to do everything by themselves. So when a moment comes when they can’t do something or don’t know something, there’s an inner struggle. I encourage you to put the pride aside and ask for help. If you need help in class, get a tutor. If you need directions to the financial aid office, ask for them. If you don’t know how to complete an application for an internship, look for someone who does. Your school will have people that can proofread your papers, help you learn how to do your laundry the right way, and even give you some good advice on how to stay in shape (because we all need our health!). Look at it this way: You will become smarter if you ask for help when you need it. If you don’t ask…you’ll remain ignorant. I’m not advocating that you shouldn’t try to find things out on your own. But there comes a time where you’ll discover that learning happens better in the context of “we” and not just “me.” And you might also discover that the best way to meet people is to simply ask, “Hi, would you mind giving me a hand with this?”

4. Get some sleep.

One thing that you have in common with every other person in the world is that each person needs to sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, bad things start happening to your mind and body. I know this is difficult to hear, and I’m probably beginning to sound a bit parental by saying this, but go to bed. I’ve pulled my share of all-nighters. I’ve had to study, cram, write, and just get it done. I’ve also stayed up too late because I kept losing at Halo and had to play just one more game. Either way, it messed me up for the next day. My body had to play catch up. I wasn’t sharp. If you string enough late nights together, you are not going to be the learning machine that you need to be. I know you’re young and invincible. But sleep is so necessary. Research says that a night of sleep deprivation is like being mentally impaired by the legal blood-alcohol level. When you don’t get adequate sleep, you’re body ages faster. Sleep also helps to relieve stress…so if you’re stressed out – you may simply need a good nap.

Ultimately, getting enough sleep is a matter of prioritization. Just because you CAN stay up, doesn’t mean you SHOULD stay up. You need to be mature enough to know when you need to get some sleep so that you can be an effective college student.

5. Get organized.

Everyone needs a plan to accomplish all of the things that are required of you in college. It is extremely easy to start living from event to event, assignment to assignment when you’re neck deep into your semester. My number one piece of advice for getting organized – get a calendar and stick to it, live by it, and look at it everyday. Now there’s lots of types of calendars out there. I like to use Google Calendar. It’s online and I can access it from anywhere. Since I spend a fair bit of time on the computer, it’s always handy. Plus, I’ve got it linked up to my email and the datebook software on my Palm Treo. But that’s my way. I made a choice one day that Google Calendar was going to be MY calendar. You’ve got to decide and stick with it. Some colleges will provide you with a paper-based calendar like a planner. This may include dates of important events for your college, key deadlines, and class schedules. If you are pen & paper minded, this may be the route for you. I also recommend the Moleskine planner. It’s smaller and easier to carry. Once you’ve chosen your calendar, you need to get busy putting EVERYTHING into it. That’s right. Put every assignment, every deadline, every part of your extensive social commitments. Remember, you don’t want to be surprised. It’s a horrible feeling to realize that you had a vital paper due yesterday. At the beginning of each semester, sit down with all of your syllabi and fill in that calendar. Set reminders a few days before big projects come due. This will also help you to see when you will have difficult weeks with lots of obligations so you can get cracking ahead of time. Now that you’ve chosen a calendar, put all your information in it, you’ve got to manage it. At the start of each week, look over the week ahead. KNOW WHAT’S COMING! If you only look at each day as it arrives, you’ll miss opportunities to be excellent. That’s the beauty of being organized. It creates space for you to do your best work. You know when something is coming and you make the appropriate time to do your best.

6. Have a lot of fun.

This is one of the best parts of college. You are going to have a ton of fun…especially if you follow the other pieces of advice in this article. College is one of the funnest experiences you will ever have. You are living with a lot of other like-minded people who are in the same situation that you’re in. It’s like Survivor (especially in the school cafeteria), but no one gets voted off the island. I laughed a lot in college. I liked to hang around people who made me laugh and didn’t take themselves so seriously. There were lots of events to attend. My buddies and I would take some great roadtrips during the breaks. There is a lot of freedom to do a lot of things while you’re in college. I chose to have as much fun as was humanly possible. The other benefit of having fun is that it makes incredible memories. I can remember some phenomenal pranks that have become lore at the college I attended (I won’t say what it is or my own level of involvement because the statute of limitations has yet to expire). While I didn’t play sports in college, I was an intramural animal.

Also, I don’t want you to get the impression that all of the fun occurred outside of the classroom. When you discover what you’re unique strengths are and land in a major that falls in line with your passions, learning becomes tremendously fun. I can remember projects and classes that I really enjoyed and looked forward to them. I think there were some professors who really made learning fun.

I guess with any aspect of college you can make the choice to have fun or to stress out. I encourage you to choose fun – even in the midst of hard work.

7. Get involved.

During the first semester of college, I joined a fraternity. I had to do some really silly things (I have fond memories of onions and “thank you sir, may I have another.”) to join this group, but it changed my entire college experience. When you arrive on campus, there will be a lot of ways that you can get involved in college besides going to class. Your college has multiple organizations that are centered around social or academic themes. There are clubs and councils that are always looking for new members. You may have a bent toward student leadership and I encourage you to jump in and apply for those positions. It has been proven that those students who get involved in extracurricular activities have a better college experience. They also have a stronger attachment to their school when they become alumni. I can remember our graduation day from college. When it came time to announce the valedictorian for our class they introduced a student whom none of us recognized. Now don’t get me wrong here…I want you to do all that you can to get good grades and pass your classes. But for our graduating class – the person with the best GPA was an anonymous person. He wasn’t involved in anything. We didn’t know who he was. Now hear me out. My GPA wasn’t stellar, but I did graduate with a 3.6 in all of my major classes. Not bad. But I also was the Student Body President, was in a fraternity, joined many clubs, worked Security, and lived in a dorm all four years. I wouldn’t trade that for a four-point-whatever and be anonymous.

8. Handle money wisely now.

Right off the bat I must tell you – watch out for credit cards. It is the easiest thing in the world to get suckered into a credit card offer and start charging things on the plastic. Here’s the catch – you have to pay it all back – with interest. My advice to you is to avoid the credit card route at all costs while you’re in school. I know that it’s probably unavoidable, so just use them for emergency purposes. Get a card with a LOW limit. Pay those things off every month. If you find you can’t do that, then you shouldn’t be using them. Most college students leave college with debt. There’s the necessary kind that comes from student loans. But it’s really hard to graduate in a financial hole because you have credit card debt. With the money you do actually have, I think it’s wise to learn how to budget. Start a savings account. Learn how to balance your checkbook and do that every month. Bounced checks are no fun. The goal here is to live within your means. You may not have as much as other students. That’s alright. You are a college student and you’re supposed to be broke. If you are in desperate need of cash, go to your college’s career center. They typically have a listing of odd jobs that students can do to get some income. Another thing you can do is to benefit from the ability to borrow rather than own. You don’t have to personally have everything, just know some of the people that do. When you live in a dorm, you begin to understand how easy it is to share. I remember that I looked better in my roommate’s sports jacket than he did. Don’t be a mooch. But learn to share what you have with others and you’ll find that they’re more willing to share what they have with you. If you spend less money than you bring in…you’ll be in good shape.

9. Learn to write well.

One of the lessons I’ve learned from Scott Ginsberg is that “writing is the basis of all wealth.” I think he’s on to something there. I would add that writing is the basis of your success in college. While you are a college student, you will read A LOT. But you will also be required to write A LOT. Your writing skills are a KEY factor in how your work will be perceived by a professor. You can have the best content in the world, but if you aren’t able to deliver that through good writing, your work will get lost in the translation. I am surprised how many college students can’t spell, don’t know how to structure a sentence properly, and use poor grammar. If you struggle with writing, then I encourage you to re-read #3. You must get this one down. One of the reasons that I started this site (CollegeStudentsRule!.com) is to help college students become better communicators. If you can write better, your work will be better. If your work is better, your grades will be better. I realize that you may be the best person in your class at text messaging…but those little acronyms don’t hold up too well under a professor’s scrutiny. Along with writing, I would encourage you to take a typing course. The computer is here to stay and if you are typing with two fingers, you’re wasting time. I think that you should work to be able to type at least 60 words a minute. Faster would be even better. Can you type without looking at the keyboard? This is a skill that won’t only benefit you in college, but in the workforce as well. One final note on writing well is in regards to proofreading. Please don’t type out a paper and print it out and turn it in. Think in terms of drafts. If you turn a first draft into a professor, he or she will know that it’s a first draft. This post that I’m writing won’t be published until the third or fourth draft. It would be even better if you could get someone else to proofread your work. That person will probably catch mistakes that you can’t see.

10. Get out of the country you’re in.

This is an idea that is becoming more and more realistic in our day and age. At our University, opportunities to study abroad are growing each year. We also offer short-term mission opportunities to other countries. There are so many ways for students to experience other cultures.

Our world is becoming more globally focused. In some ways it’s shrinking. Companies are branching out across national boundaries. Any type of experience you can have outside of your home country will benefit you in your career and perspective on life. If you can get somewhere…go for it. You are young and you don’t have many of the responsibilities yet that could tie you down to your local geographical area.

I understand that some of you may have difficulty (financially or otherwise) getting out of your country. If that’s the case, find ways to learn about other cultures (watch the National Geographic Channel). But nothing beats actually going there and walking on foreign soil and being immersed in another culture.

11. Keep growing.

It may seem obvious to you that you would be growing since you’re in college. But I meet a lot of college students who gain knowledge, but don’t gain growth. I guess I’m talking about maturity. There are many experiences that you’ll have in college that can help you to grow up if you’ll let them. Current research says that adolescence is being pushed farther out – to the mid 20′s. They are calling it delayed adulthood. Many young adults are simply pushing back some of the major decisions: marriage, career, home purchasing, etc – to later in life. But being young doesn’t mean you have to be immature.

There are many ways to grow outside of the classroom. Life has a way of providing it’s own type of classroom. Each of us has an opportunity to grow emotionally, relationally, spiritually, psychologically, and physically. Take the experiences you have in life and spend time reflecting on how you can use those to become a better person. Growth isn’t an automatic process. It takes work and it takes time. Use these exciting years in college to develop yourself. It’s exciting to watch Seniors walk across the stage at graduation and remember what they were like when they came in as Freshman. There is so much potential that is wrapped into each one. I love being apart of the process of unlocking that potential during their time in college. That’s why I’ve written this article. Self-Education Through the Use of Video and Audio Podcasts

Video and audio podcasts are accessible anywhere and anytime if there’s Internet access and most often are free. Browsing a list of podcasts can result in a magnitude of podcasts from a range of interests from history, business, math, fashion, humor, sports, medical, religious, class lectures, political, audio books, and many more but are podcasts helpful to a student (traditional and non-traditional) attempting to learn on their own?

Since people who view or listen to podcasts are attempting to educate themselves they typically find the activity to be pleasing, motivating, and positive. They found the experience to lessen student anxiety and because the video or audio could be played multiple times the student could replay a segment they might not have understood the first time. Video podcasts help with visual learners who could watch an instructor perform a physical task such as changing a tire or completing a 1040 for their taxes (Kay, 2012, p. 824). Some of the more popular video podcasts are teachertube.com (free), The Khan Academy (free), and mylearningcube.com (for-profit), as well as viewing Youtube.com (free). For audio podcasts there are many free apps for podcasts which are also usually free to listen and many universities use iTunesU for lectures. There are many MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) available as well (Giannakos, 2016, p. 1259). Podcasts are also great for students whose first language is not English, have a learning disability, and lower socio-economic backgrounds (Gachago, 2016, p. 859, 861, & 863). One aspect that makes self-education even more effective is by linking the podcast to a social media network for viewers and listeners to comment on the podcast and ask questions of the group as well as comment on what they learned. Using the podcast as the lecture and social media as the classroom is a good way to further one’s self-education (Giannakos, 2016, p. 1267).

Informational professionals could inform their patrons of good video and audio podcasts that are reputable and fact based. Other than listening and watching podcasts and commenting on social media sites is meeting face-to-face with people that are also learning the same materials create a bond with their fellow learners (Kay, 2012, p. 823). Drawbacks to video and audio podcasts for self-education are the lack of Internet access, lack of a mobile device or PC, and not knowing how to get a podcast to work. Libraries are the perfect place for giving people the ability to use podcasts. Almost all public libraries have Wi-Fi and Internet access and many libraries now allow people to borrow hot spots for at-home Wi-Fi. All libraries have computers and headphones for patron use and can provide the knowledge to access video and audio podcasts.

The Hustle. Team No Sleep. Social Media. Grinding. All apart of the busy lives of entrepreneurs. Often times, we forget about ourselves when we're trying to pour everything we have into our business(s). Sometimes, we have to slow down and focus on what’s important; our health, beauty and well-being.

I don't like to call it a routine, because I switch it up often! So, self care for me is a strategy, and depending on what I need that week, it may include a few different tricks. Nonetheless, here are 5 things that I do most consistently for self care:

Reading. Generally, I make time in my week to read at least a 3-4 hours. Whether its self-help books or autobiographies (my favorite!), I squeeze time in for leisure reading to take my mind off the demands of the week.

BUBBLE BATHS!!!!!!! Ok, its probably not that serious but I L O V E bubble baths. Give me a glass of red wine and some candles, and I've created my own spa oasis. And the best part? Its totally free and relaxes your spirit. I sleep better those nights, allowing me to start the next day refreshed and ready to go.

Writing. Yes, I write ALL day for my job and the podcast, but I also love writing in my journal and writing short stories and poems. It's almost like an escape from the real world.

Sleeping in. Please don't ask me to do anything on Saturday mornings because Saturdays are my sleep in days. I usually don't leave the bed until noon, giving my body some extra oomph to start my Saturday strong!

Catching up with family & friends. Although I have amazing friends in Dallas, most of my tenured friends and all of my family live out of state. Making time each week to talk or Facetime them centers me and helps me to remember just how AMAZING my circle is. It definitely helps me to keep going and going and going to make them proud!

Self-care is the key to my sanity! While I don't indulge in spa treatments and such as often as I'd like, I found that my self-care goes beyond luxurious treats.

I take care of my physical health by exercising 3 times per week, drinking lots of water, and limiting meat and dairy in my diet. I find this combination helps me sleep better, wake up in a state of clarity, keep my skin youthful, and feel less weighed down and groggy throughout the day.

I take care of my emotional health by engaging with and nurturing relationships around me that are positive, loving, and encouraging. Even with my hectic schedule, my husband and daughter are priority number 1. They are my center and I am intentional about not being so wrapped up in business that I miss moments with them.

I also exercise my power of saying no. I am very clear on my goals and say no to things that don't fit on the path to my dreams. Limiting distractions helps keep me clear, focused, purposeful, and intentional.

My self- care routine is pretty simple, nothing too complex or fancy with the exception of 1 item.

Exercise. I try to exercise 4 days a week doing camp gladiator, TRX or yoga. All depends on what my body needs. Sometimes I make it happen with my busy schedule.

Tyler Gatewood has come home to Northwestern State University. The incoming freshman from McKinney, Texas, plans to major in industrial engineering technology and was one of nearly 300 new students who attended Session 3 of Freshman Connection last week. Gatewood, son of NSU Alumni Tamara and Reggie Gatewood, is the oldest grandchild of the late Dr. Randall J. Webb, NSU’s longest serving-president, and Mrs. Brenda Webb of Shreveport. In addition to orientation, class registration, advising and learning about campus life, Gatewood, second from left, also attended a lunch for new NSU Ambassadors that included Gabby Chapman of Ville Platte, a business major; Behrend Behrendsen of Natchitoches, a computer information systems major, and Blake Cook of Hornbeck, an electrical engineering technology major. Ambassadors are student recruiters who act as hosts at open house days and conduct campus tours. “I grew up around campus and want to carry on a legacy that’s been going on for many years,” Gatewood said. “I looked at other schools, but I knew I wanted to come here. It’s great to finally be part of NSU. It’s all I imagined it to be.”

Tank, Octopus, and Submarine: 3D Models from Texas

NCLab is delighted to share some great 3D models from McKinney High School in Texas. Computer Science teacher Theresa Horvath writes:

“After attending the NCLab workshop at the 2016 CSTA Annual Conference last year, I returned to school with a goal of having students use the NCLab programs before the end of the school year. My 1st year computer science students learn to code using Scratch, Jeroo and Java. I was eager for them to also use the NCLab courses to learn Python and create tangible products produced by their own code. I submitted a grant request for a 3D printer and our local McKinney Education Foundation awarded me $2500.

The 3D printer arrived in January. Students have been working on projects during this 1st-year computer science course. They began by completing Karel and Turtle Tina lessons, including numerous Turtle Tina 3D designs. Then they used the 3D Modeling lessons and online example projects as a guide in order to write code for their own 3D objects. The students created various designs including a football field, hockey rink, basketball hoop, toilet paper roll and key ring.

After the AP exam in early May, my AP Computer Science A students began using the NCLab software also. They explored a little with Turtle Tina lessons, but most jumped right into the Python 3D Modeling. Numerous students wrote code for amazing projects such as an Octopus Planter, Military Tank and Submarine.”

How did the students build such complex models? Each one begins by defining objects as simple shapes. These shapes are then combined, subtracted, rotated, moved, and tweaked in many ways. Can you see how the planter started as a sphere-shaped shell? Or how the tank includes several repeated shapes? The fuselage of the submarine began as a set of points used to create a Bezier curve.

Leaving a Legacy to Future Generations

For most of her career, Dorothy Keenan worked with older adults, eventually becoming the supervisor of senior services in Fairfax County, Va. But three years ago, as a retiree, she decided to focus on the younger generation, volunteering at elementary schools that primarily serve lower-income children.

Keenan, 66, is now the unpaid coordinator of GrandInvolve, which places more than 100 older volunteers in six schools as mentors and classroom assistants. During a typical stint, Keenan will take aside five children to play games that support the teacher’s lesson plan. Besides helping the kids with reading and writing, Keenan says she reinforces their learning by “showing there is an older person interested in seeing them become successful.”

The children are particularly fascinated by Keenan’s age. One commented on her “soft” skin. They’re interested in her “bad” back. “I may be their only link to an older person,” says Keenan, who lives in Burke, Va.

Intergenerational volunteer programs such as GrandInvolve are the focus of a new campaign of Encore.org, which promotes second-act jobs and volunteer work to solve social problems. Its Generation to Generation initiative aims to encourage older adults to employ their skills to help children and young adults. “These are puzzle pieces that fit,” says Sarah McKinney, the campaign’s communications director. As baby boomers retire, “there’s a wisdom boom that can benefit kids, who are struggling more than ever.”

Studies show that intergenerational programs can lead to reading gains, improvement in class behavior and higher graduation rates. Older volunteers can also reap benefits. “There’s quite a body of evidence that older people who volunteer, and specifically those who volunteer with children, are happier, enjoy better mental and physical health, and live longer,” says Shirley Sagawa, president of the nonprofit Service Year Alliance and author of The American Way to Change (Jossey-Bass, $30), which describes the benefits of national service.

Older volunteers are tutoring, coaching sports, guiding young parents and helping graduates find jobs. If you have specialized knowledge, perhaps you can teach computer skills or a musical instrument in community programs. Those who don’t want to work directly with children can ask an organization if it needs help with, say, fundraising or marketing.

Mentoring Benefits Both Generations

Robert Talley decided to go the mentoring route. In 2009, Talley, then an analyst for the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department, moved from Washington state to the Washington, D.C., suburbs. He approached the local chapter of Concerned Black Men, which matches African-American youth with positive role models, and was assigned to work with three teens.

Talley, 60, who retired last year, says he benefited from mentors when he was growing up in Philadelphia and during his years in the military. Mentoring by his high school swim coach was a big reason Talley stayed out of trouble after his father died when he was 16, he says. The coach “literally raised me as one of his own children,” says Talley, a father of four daughters.

One of the teens Talley worked with was a seventh grader named Demetrius, who was a “good kid” being raised by a hard-working single mother in a crime-ridden neighborhood.

Talley took Demetrius and the other two teens to museums and to work on community projects, such as a riverbank cleanup project. They also visited Philadelphia. “My message was “where you start out is not where you end up,’ ” he says. He stressed the importance of education and hanging around with “the right folks in the neighborhood.”

Talley took Demetrius for college visits. He’s now in an art school and remains in regular touch with Talley. “I try to be a friend–a true friend,” he says. Talley has encouraged others to become mentors.

23 ways to spend your tax return that can make you happy and the world a better place.

Feel good about your splurging.

It's April, which begs the question how are you going to spend your tax return this year?

(If, of course, you're fortune enough to get a return. My condolences if you end up owing Uncle Sam.)

Bills need to be paid. And the zeroes in your student debt total should, at least in theory, keep dwindling. You should probably stock the pantry while you're at it, and make sure the gas tank is filled, too.

But if you cross off all the boring payments on your "being a responsible adult" list and still have a good chunk of change at your disposal, I have a few suggestions that could make you feel good about where your money is going.

Here are 23 seriously rewarding ways you can spend your tax return this year:

1. Buy individual sets of flowers and visit a senior center.

Bring a friend if you like, too, and pass them out room by room. You'll definitely make (at least) one person's day.

2. Find a cool and important project helping teachers and students on DonorsChoose.

The online platform allows educators, mostly in underserved communities, to raise funds for neat learning opportunities for their students — from getting new computer tablets to providing enough instruments to create a drum line for music class.

3. Donate it to a local nonprofit helping your own community.

Big, national, or international nonprofits do vital work, of course. But there's something pretty special about seeing how the people in your own city can benefit from a little generosity.

4. Pay it forward in the drive-through line — or, better yet, the grocery store.

You've seen the viral stories of folks grabbing the tabs of other patrons ahead of or behind them in line. You could be the person who starts the next chain reaction.

5. This one isn't immediately gratifying, but ... your savings account may need some padding.

Just because something doesn't give you instant gratification doesn't mean it won't eventually be rewarding, right? Save up to pay off that loan, buy that car, be prepared for a rainy day, or be less burdened when next semester's tuition bill arrives. It'll be worth it.

6. Sponsor a person or group that has been taken advantage of by our flawed justice system.

News flash: The power structures at play in our law enforcement and justice systems favor white and wealthy people. Funded Justice is a crowdfunding platform where donors can help foot defense expenses — like legal and bail fees, for example — for those seeking a fair shot.

7. Throw a pizza party at your local food bank.

Ask the Pennsylvania man who did just that in 2016 — it's great knowing every cheesy bite is greatly appreciated.

8. Reach out to that friend you've been meaning to call and take them out to dinner and a movie.

You both deserve each other's company.

9. Chocolate.

Hey now, it's good for you. Indulge a little.

10. Give cash to a friend or family member who could really use it this month — in the form of a money cake.

11. Buy new socks and feminine hygiene products to give to a homeless shelter.

They're always among the most requested items, but — because you can't donate these sorts of items used — many donors don't realize how tremendous the need is. (Here are other vital products to donate you maybe haven't thought of.)

12. Donate to Meals on Wheels, then grab a friend and volunteer for the group locally.

After seeing President Donald Trump's proposed budget, the organization may need all the help it can get in the years ahead.

13. Commit to guilt-free purchases for the week.

Shopping for food, clothes, and other products that are fair trade, locally sourced, and produced by ethical companies can be an expensive, exhausting privilege not everyone can afford.

But with some extra cash on hand, try to take the leap for a few days. You may be able to work in some better long-term spending habits, too.

14. Book a solo weekend getaway on the fly.

Depending on whether you're an impulse buyer, this probably sounds either exciting or terrifying. Either way, you should indulge in some R and R. In today's 24/7, on-the-go world, recharging mentally and physically is important. (Plus, solo travel rocks.) Quick, go!

15. Donate to an organization that helps people who are particularly vulnerable in the era of Trump.

So many groups — immigrants, LGBTQ people, women, people of color, Muslims, and others — are facing a hostile administration attempting to strip away their rights and send us backward. Help them out.

16. Buy house plants and bulk up on garden items just in time for spring.

Research suggests that greening up your living quarters can actually benefit your health and boost happiness. If you're new to the plant game, maybe start out with some succulents (they practically take care of themselves).

17. Order a bunch of Girl Scout cookies for the neighbors you love or the ones you haven't met yet.

What's a better icebreaker than "Hi, here are some Thin Mints"? Another option: Hoard all of the Samoas and Caramel deLites for yourself (no judgment). Either way, you'll be supporting an important organization doing great things.

18. See if there's an Amazon Wish List registry for an animal shelter near you.

Animal shelters need lots of specific items to care for their four-legged friends — things like outdoor, durable furniture, cat and dog food, and specialized collars to keep pups (and their humans) safe.

19. Buy some Dogsbutter for your pup. Your purchase will helping another sweet doggo in need.

20. Buy "(R)evolution: The Girls Write Now 2016 Anthology" and help underserved teen girls pursue their creative dreams.

The book of essays and poetry was published by Girls Write Now, a New York-based after school program that connects girls with accomplished female writers, who serve as mentors. All proceeds of the book benefit the program.

21. Donate to a bowling team that's helping fund abortion access.

The National Abortion Access Bowl-a-Thon allows people to set up bowling teams and fundraise on behalf of abortion access across the country. Donate or — better yet — join a team. It's a sort of unconventional but equally awesome idea.

22. Get your neighborhood excited about books again, and snag some supplies to set up your own Little Free Library.

Once you build and stock one of these (ridiculously adorable) mini-libraries in your yard — or any other public-facing space you think might be a great spot — readers take a book from the stockpile and leave a different one in its place.

Spending Millions to Keep a Home Safe

In the Hollywood Hills, where musician and studio owner Jed Leiber lives, his imposing 12,000-square-foot house is known by some locals as “the Fortress.”

The walls are made of concrete. High-resolution security cameras monitor activity. Each room requires a key fob for access. And the master-bedroom suite includes a safe room, built into one of two dressing areas and hidden by a bulletproof plate that slides down from the ceiling.

Mr. Leiber, son of the late songwriter Jerry Leiber and owner of NightBird Recording Studios in West Hollywood, bought the house in 2012 for $7.2 million, primarily for its Bauhaus-style architecture and a sweeping view of Los Angeles, which has moved him to call it “Sky Castle.” Since then, he has also come to value the property’s strong security and has further upgraded it.

“I just want to make sure that anyone is safe within the walls of my home, Sky Castle,” says Mr. Leiber, who wants to spend more time traveling and touring and is seeking $50 million for the seven-bedroom, 12-bathroom house. He also owns a penthouse apartment in West Hollywood.

High-end homeowners are increasingly taking James Bond-esque security measures to manage threats ranging from burglars and kidnappers to terror attacks and civil unrest. Such precautions can cost millions, but as prices for home technology come down, sophisticated security systems are showing up in middle-class homes as well.

Home-security companies are seeing an uptick in sales. For example, Gaffco Ballistics, a Londonderry, Vt.-based security firm, says the number of residential projects it completed in 2015 grew by 60%, to 52 homes, from the year before.

“There is a higher level of perceived threat out there, and it’s growing every year,” says Tom Gaffney, chief executive of the company, which sells bullet-resistant doors, safe rooms and ventilation systems to deal with the effects of nuclear, chemical or biological attacks.

In the high-end housing market, protection is increasingly a selling point. Sotheby’s International Realty, which is launching an international marketing campaign for Mr. Leiber’s Hollywood Hills home, starting in China, is emphasizing its state-of-the-art security features. At a minimum, real-estate agents say, discerning buyers expect a so-called smart home, where security systems, lighting, climate control and energy consumption are all managed with a phone or computer app. Video surveillance is in particular demand in the residential market, says Tim McKinney, director of custom home services for ADT Security Services in North America.

“If someone is doing small household work, I can let them in, turn off the alarm, unlock the door, follow them through the house with cameras and then lock the door and reset the alarm, all without leaving work,” says ADT customer Jeffrey Starkman, a periodontist in Parkland, Fla., who lives in a six-bedroom house with his wife, pediatric dentist Sharlene Starkman, kids Mia, Maxwell and Mason, and their schnoodle Ponyo. Mr. Starkman, 42, also receives an alert when a visitor sets foot in the wrong room. The 5,000-square-foot house, which the Starkmans bought in a gated community for $950,000 in 2008, has keypads at the doors, cameras in the garden and smoke detectors that tell the air-conditioning system to stop circulating air in case of fire.

ADT says the cost of installing its Pulse wireless home-security system varies with complexity, but for a 4,000-square-foot house, installation costs between $1,800 and $4,500. Monthly monitoring fees range from $60 to $80.

At their home near Portland, Ore., Andy and Laurie Teich are taking video surveillance to a higher level. Of the 16 security cameras installed around their six-bedroom house, three are thermal cameras that detect the body heat of humans and animals—avoiding false alarms triggered by sun, rain or leaves swirling around the backyard.

“You know it’s real activity and not just bugs flying in front of the camera at night,” says Mr. Teich, chief executive officer of Flir Systems Inc., a Wilsonville, Ore., manufacturer of thermal-imaging technology that started in the military but is finding its way into residential security.

Mr. Teich, who is 56 and recently announced plans to retire, initially installed the cameras to test them for work but found that they make his wife and kids, Alec, Carter and Taylor, feel safer during his frequent business trips.

“If my wife calls in the middle of the night because she heard a noise, I can immediately put eyes on that house and pretty much understand what’s going on around the property,” says Mr. Teich.

The Teichs bought their house, which sits on a 5-acre lot that was formerly a Christmas tree farm, for $930,000 in 1999 and remodeled it for $1.5 million in 2012, enlarging the home to 10,000 square feet.

Mr. Teich says the property has several layers of security: a safe neighborhood, a conventional alarm system, the cameras—and what he calls “the Labrador layer”—dogs Fenway and Laci. So far, the cameras have triggered one alarm—but the unannounced visitor turned out to be a coyote.

When David and Barbara Miller bought their house in Wainscott, N.Y., for $1.7 million in 2002, it came with a garden, pool and poolhouse, but it lacked a place to safely store Mr. Miller’s collection of antique guns and other firearms. So as part of a $2 million renovation, the couple enlarged the property and added a fortified vault in the basement. With 6-inch-thick concrete walls and a steel door by firearms maker Browning Arms Co., the room is big enough for the guns—and for Mr. Miller, who is 6-feet tall, to comfortably move around in. Mr. Miller, 51, equipped the door with two locks: an electronic lock with a keypad and a combination lock, like the one typically found on a safe. The room, completed in 2011 and slightly larger than a closet, has air conditioning and could shelter several people if they needed a hiding place for a limited time.

“It could work in that manner but, thank God, we’ve never had to use it that way,” says Ms. Miller, 50. In late 2013, the couple, now both farmers, moved into an 1852 farmhouse in Barboursville, Va., to live in the country. The six-bedroom, 6,000-square-foot home in the Hamptons is on the market for $3.39 million, and security is a selling point. The property includes an alarm system and cameras that monitor the 1.2-acre lot.

Safe rooms, also called panic rooms, are evolving as well.

Increasingly, they aren’t separate rooms with one function, since families dislike giving up space for a room they never want to use. These homeowners reinforce existing rooms with fortified walls and doors, install secure communication systems and connect independent power sources. Those features blend in with the décor, as to avoid detection or scaring the kids.

“Every client should have several places in their home that are going to protect them for the length of time that it takes for the police to get there,” says Christopher Falkenberg, president of New York firm Insite Security.

At Scott and Maria Jensen’s 4,500-square-foot, five-bedroom house in Arizona—the exact location has been withheld at their request—the safe room is hidden behind a fireplace. Mr. Jensen, 47, said a series of break-ins in the neighborhood and the experience of a colleague whose safe was stolen contributed to his decision. Creative Home Engineering, a Gilbert, Ariz.-based security company, installed a secret switch on the mantel that, when touched with a magnet, opens a door to a concealed space. The cost: $15,000.

The company also builds bookcases, brick walls and staircases that can open to reveal secret spaces. The Jensens’ safe room is big enough for two adults standing in it, but they primarily wanted a hiding place for valuables, not for themselves. If they felt personally threatened, Mr. Jensen says, “we would rather just go outside.”
