Conversation Pieces attempts to connect people through performance. Each piece is an instruction for collaboration: between artists working together across distances; artist and audience; our body and space; inside and outside; window and street; and between domestic and public life. It proposes these artworks not as objects to be collected, but as starting points for work in the public domain, a call to be answered through actions that are fleeting and commonplace.

Replacing the gallery wall with the invisible yet tangible space of the window pane, Conversation Pieces encourages public action, movements, meetings and/or exchanges in times of increased isolation, “social bubbles” and restriction of movement. At the same time, their placement references a history of political protest, asking us to “do something” beyond passive viewing.

Conversation Pieces is inspired by Yoko Ono’s 1964 seminal book Grapefruit, as well as similar performative experiments by artists such as Bruce Nauman (Body Pressure, 1974). Ono’s “scores” were intended to replace the physicality of the artwork with instructions for everyday acts as a way to highlight the hybridity between art and life.

After printing your PDF’s, please hang them in your windows and record any action you see taking place or have created yourself.

TSA_PDF is a series of printable exhibitions curated by Tiger Strikes Asteroid. People are invited to download and print these works on their home printers and share their “install shots,” which we will share on social media and our website. We view these exhibitions as a fun, experimental way to bring something physical and meaningful into people’s homes as they socially distance.

Conversation Pieces @ Supergau

After an open call early 2022, I was invited by artistic director Tina Heine to work on 'Conversation Pieces'. A site-specific concept for the Supergau Festival 2023 in Lungau Austria. With this artistic intervention I focused on the 'rural flight' (called 'landflucht') where young people exchange the countryside for the city. This beautiful region has a rich cultural past, but what about its future? 'Conversation Pieces' offered a valuable opportunity to imagine and discuss the future. While conversing, perform the inverse of Conversation Piece No. 3a by automatically shifting your speech from ‘saying what you mean’ to ‘saying one thing and meaning something else’ (and then back again), only when your body or leg has grown weary in its current position and you feel compelled to shift your weight.

The basis for his designs is the Italian Capidimonte porcelain, which makes classic and gaudy tableware and figurines. The designer actually made cool art objects; tools cast in white porcelain and decorated with lovely flowers in fine colours. This makes for a special combination.
