From the moment you step off the plane, you will feel more relaxed! As you enter the Airport you are welcomed by the warm greeting “Kia Orana” from locals and the tropical sound of Jake Numanga’s ukelele. Welcome to the Cook Islands!
Tip 1: If you are arriving direct from Sydney on the Air New Zealand flight, make sure you pre-book an early check-in at your hotel, the flight arrives at 6.25am and it is a long day if you have to wait until 2pm to check into your hotel.
Day 2: Saturday
Head into Avarua (aka Town) and visit Punanga Nui Cultural Market this morning, there are lots of delicious dining options to choose from, the markets are open 8am — 12pm so aim to visit first thing in the morning for breakfast or have an early lunch! During the day, grab your snorkelling gear and head out to ‘Fruits of Rarotonga ‘, Titikaveka or the lagoon in front of Aroa beach for the best underwater viewing experience.
Later in the day, why not enjoy one of Rarotonga’s spectacular sunsets, with an early dinner reservation at Manuia Beach Resort’s OTB Restaurant for a barefoot luxury dining experience.
Day 3: Sunday
Enjoy a relaxing morning, and breakfast at the resort, if you have not experienced a South Pacific church service, today is the day! Be at your nearest church for a 10am start, this is a great way to meet the locals and enjoy an insight into their way of life. Take the rest of the day to relax, unwind and maybe catch another sunset in the evening.
Day 4: Monday
After a chilled day, it’s time to take it up a notch, one of the most popular walks on the island is the ‘cross-island trek’ which goes from one side of the island to the other. Climb through the lush jungle and be rewarded with a spectacular view from the highest point Te Rua Manga (The Needle), you can almost see the entire island from here! End your 3–4 hour walk with a refreshing swim at Wigmore’s waterfall. Later visit Beluga Café for lunch, we guarantee once you have tried their delicious food, you will be counting down until you can go back!

Natural Beauty
The natural beauty of the Cook Islands is one of its biggest draws for photographers. Here are some more reasons why a photographer should enjoy the natural beauty of the Cook Islands:
Pristine Beaches: The Cook Islands offer some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in the world. The beaches are surrounded by clear turquoise waters and are lined with coconut palms, creating a picturesque scene that is perfect for photography.
Coral Reefs: The Cook Islands are home to some of the world’s most beautiful and diverse coral reefs. The reefs are teeming with marine life, including colourful fish, turtles, and even sharks. Photographers can capture the vibrant colours and unique patterns of the coral, as well as the underwater creatures that call it home.
Waterfalls: The Cook Islands are also home to several stunning waterfalls that are worth capturing through photography. One of the most popular waterfalls is the Wigmore’s Waterfall, which is located on the main island of Rarotonga.
Tropical Vegetation: The islands are covered in lush tropical vegetation, including coconut palms, banana trees, and ferns. This vegetation provides a beautiful backdrop for photography, and photographers can capture the different textures and colours of the plants.
By Cook Island travel, you will get to experience some of the Pacific’s most spectacular natural beauty which will undoubtedly make for some incredible photo opportunities.
The Unique Culture
The unique culture of the Cook Islands is one of its most fascinating aspects, and provides a rich and colourful subject matter for photographers. The Cook Islands are famous for their traditional dance, which is a major part of the Polynesian culture. The dance is characterised by graceful movements and colourful costumes, making it an excellent subject for photography.
The Polynesian people of the Cook Islands have a long history of arts and crafts, including weaving, carving, and tattooing. Photographers can capture the intricate details of these crafts, as well as the process of their creation. The Cook Islands are also home to several local markets where vendors sell fresh produce, handicrafts, and souvenirs. These markets provide an excellent opportunity to capture the vibrant colours and textures of the local culture.
Sunsets and Sunrises
The Cook Islands are known for their spectacular sunsets and sunrises, which provide a stunning backdrop for photography. The timing of the sunrise and sunset can vary depending on the season and the island. It’s important to do some research beforehand to find out the best time to capture the sunsets and sunrises on the particular island you are visiting.
The location of your photo shoot can make a big difference in the quality of your photographs. Look for a location that offers an unobstructed view of the horizon, such as a beach or a hilltop. When photographing sunsets and sunrises, it’s important to consider the composition of your shot. Look for interesting elements to include in your shot, such as a palm tree, a boat, or a rock formation, to create a sense of depth and perspective.
