No. 26 - Copa Airlines

Over this weekend, I had you all fill out a questionnaire. Now, every question that's on there was on there for a reason, but some of those reasons are a bit more straightforward than others.

This one, for example, was something I had already been using a survey for, and I figured using my followers would meet a higher standard of science than using my coworkers and a few discord chats. If anything, it is needlessly biased in favor of the airline in question, since my followers include many Airplane People. And boy do the results speak volumes.

I removed the wordmark from this picture of an airplane and asked you all what airline she flies for. (Let's pretend the title of this post doesn't spoil the answer.) The answers were overwhelmingly consistent.

32 out of 77 responses, a stunning 45%, identified this plane as flying for United Airlines.

I mean, not hard to understand why. The only things that are different are a slightly darker shade of blue, minor tweaks to the logo on the tail, and the easy-to-miss detail that the mystery plane is registered in Panama. (In fact, the only way to recognize what airline it flies for, in my own opinion, is that the airline's ICAO code is in the registration. Again, not something the average person would spot, or indeed should be expected to.)

The second most common response was either not responding, or saying that you don't know. (Actually, a lot of people expressed unsureness, but these people outright refused to guess.) The third most common response was AT&T. The phone company. In a similar vein, another respondent guessed Euronews, the news show.

Then we have four people who guessed Continental.

This is completely reasonable, since their livery is just the old United livery - rather, United's old livery is stolen from Continental during their merger. I get the sense that the difference between people who immediately assume United and people who immediately assume Continental is whether they were over or under a certain age in 2012.

A handful of other specific airlines were guessed. I'm not going to touch on all of them, including the ones I've already reviewed - I'll just leave a little collage of the miscellaneous guesses.

Okay. So the answer is obviously that this is, as it says in the title, Copa Airlines.

Three people actually guessed this correctly, and two of them live in Latin America. Copa (Compañía Panameña de Aviación) is the flag carrier of Panama and one of the largest carriers in Latin America. I find Copa's livery to be almost powerful in how tragic it is. It wasn't always like this.

Back in the day Copa had its own livery, its own branding. And I'm not going to linger on the fact that these are Iberia colors, because a lot of airlines use similar colors but this says COPA on it in huge text in two places.

This might seem like a weird case of self-sabotaging plagiarism, but it actually came about in a way I find far worse. Copa and Continental had a marketing alliance, with Continental having a 49% stake in the company until 1999, when it was increased to 51%. Immediately, Copa, in addition to partnering with Continental, began to use the same frequent flier program and - what I care about - the same livery.

I don't even have it in me to care about how the livery is boring and the font is ugly, how it's a far worse version of it than what Continental and then United wore. That is like seeing a corpse and being disturbed that it has a bad haircut. This airline is wearing a livery almost universally recognized to be that of a different airline. What is even the point of painting your planes with your name if you care this little about having an identity? You might as well be operating as United Express.

The worst thing is that United has changed their livery now. They don't have a majority stake in Copa, and haven't for well over a decade. Copa has its own fleet, its own routes, its own holding company, its own frequent flyer program, its own history, its own name. So why is it still wearing a livery that was never its own to begin with?

Maybe they don't want to commit fully to the retro look. But there is so much room in the world for this vibrant color scheme, this large legible wordmark, and this adorable little airplane underline logo. If only they hadn't committed to having planes that, if identifiable, are identifiable as a completely different airline.

And that makes me angry. That defeats the entire point. It makes me feel a potent mix of disgust and pity. This is an empty, broken thing. Not even a husk. A little shriveled creature inside of a very large, empty, cold jar. Any life would be better than this, if it could just be alive again.

I have opinions on its overall appearance, sure. And I am not factoring them into this final rating. You copy Continental's homework and change it a bit, you get failed for plagiarism.

Just...you're allowed to do more than breathing. You've had Continental's livery for decades. At any moment, you could say 'no more', and you could decide that you care about being Copa Airlines. I really hope you do that soon.

Anyways LET'S GO BOYS, buckle the seatbelts and set up the parachutes cause this one's messy (cue faint laughter) too.

Context : so Leo Messi was signed at 13 yo at FCB, and is therefore considered a La Masia (club's academy) product, such as the likes of Iniesta, Xavi (current coach), Piqué, Puyol, etc, and more recently Gavi, Fati, etc. He did his whole club career there, from 2000 (with the Junior team) till 2021; was widely seen as a one-club man who'd end his career there, at the club of his life. Despite this though, everything wasn't all unicorns and pink sparkles and his relationship with the club wavered several times, and hard.

There were first rumors about a departure in 2014, but the death of Tito Vilanova (Barca assistant/coach and close to Leo) changed that (common version is that Tito asked him to stay at the club, Leo obliged). A year later in 2015, very strong movements about him possibly moving to Chelsea after rumored failing relationship with then coach Luis Enrique. Everything kind of calmed down until Neymar's departure in 2017; Leo was one of several players who entered in a sort of cold war with the board for failing to find a proper replacement for Neymar. A bit of calm again, until in August 2020, small bombshell: Messi's side sent a burofax (the trolling on twitter was funny asf ngl) expressing his desire to part ways with the club. By then, under the presidency of Bartomeu, the club was a clear mess in and off the pitch and getting out of one of its worst seasons ever (2019 - 2020). Ensued a very public back and forth argument between Messi's side and the club (about which ex players and ex managers also expressed their opinions, somehow), at the end of which Messi eventually refused to take the matter to court (« I would never go to court against the club of my life » alright, let me indulge in that quote a bit, a girl needs some soothing).

So he started the 2020 - 2021 season to go til the end of his contract, which was to end on July 1st, 2021. Didn't deter him from openly speaking against the club, though, the guy was pissed off and made it known (criticizing the way Luis Suarez, FCB striker since 2014 and close friend of Leo, was shamefully let go from the club: « at this stage nothing surprises me any more [about the club] »). The season finished in May 2021, and by that time, despite very mediocre results, it's said he'd changed his mind and wanted to stay at the club, wanted to sign a contract extension. On July 1st, contract expired, he becomes a free agent (meaning any club can sign him) in the middle of the Copa America he's playing with Argentina.

Now, ensue one of the most messy couple of weeks ever. We don't really know what happened because several versions were given: it's all image/media manipulation on who fucked who, who's at fault, who tried, etc. Basically, it's Laporta v. Messi's side. I would direct you to this twitter thread that gives the player's version. Broken down simply, everything seemed to have been agreed for a renewal; Leo spend the 2021 Copa America (DALE CAMPEON) persuaded that it was just a matter of days/weeks until he'd sign the renewal. Until, very suddenly, on August 5th, Laporta called it all off and said the deal wouldn't go through; FCB wouldn't renew Messi.

Of the reasons that were invoked, the crucial point remains the obvious financial struggles the club was going through (had been for long time, it was kind of the tipping point). Messi's wages were declared too expensive and endangering for the club, despite Messi reportedly agreeing to a 50% or 75% - versions vary - wages cut (something no other player in the dressing room agreed to); Laporta said he was putting the club's safety above all else. So, by early August 2021, Messi was left with no club, his agent/father having rejected multiple times multiple offers (such as City's) in July, thinking a new deal was to be concluded shortly with FCB.

BOOM. Do you hear that? That's oil money, babe. Enter our dear trashcan of a club, PSG. PSG's sporting director, Leonardo, had left the door ajar for Jorge Messi, just in case: that's were Jorge went, for lack of other options, when Laporta called the FCB deal off at the ending month of the summer transfer window. There were strong links for Messi to go to PSG: the French locker room comprised several close Argentine friends & teammates with whom he'd just won the Copa America (Paredes, Di Maria) and another close friend in Neymar, who'd never stopped dreaming about playing with Leo again and was all too eager to make Leo come to PSG. These guys pushed for him to come to the club; it assured him some familiarity amidst what was a career & life earthquake - change of club, of league, of country. PSG immediately facilitated everything, and in a matter of days, the deal was concluded. (Upon which our very own Brazilian 222M transfer posted Instagram stories of him watching Neymar/Messi edits on Youtube to celebrate Leo's coming. I got no words. Istg we should disect the man's brains.)

The infamous press conf given by Leo was reportedly rushed by Laporta's side, who wanted to get accross Laporta's version of what had happened as quickly and controlled as possible.

Messi's departure broke several links: commercially wise, important sponsors withdrew from the club and from La Liga. Personally wise, his friendship with Piqué (it's said Piqué, friend dating all the way back to the La Masia days, was the one who told Laporta getting Messi off would help the club's finances), which Messi took as a treason (they still don't talk to this day). Messi's relationship with Laporta took a hit too, I mean, like, was completely broken as well. That's partly why until a few months ago it seemed impossible for him to come back, with a relationship to a club's president as severed as theirs was/is. The overnight U turn of Laporta deprived Messi from having options (City, were his ex manager Pep Guardiola is) and forced him to chose under the pressure of time, the fact that if Laporta had decided to make the older players in the locker room take a wage cut as well, with the amount of revenue Messi generates for the club, he could have stayed, the cold media war over which version was the truth, the press conference, etc.

It's messy as fuck. But unlike Neymar's departure, it's not coming from the player, but rather a player evicted from the club (with reason or not; I'm not judging, just stating), so it's less of asking from where/why the decision comes from, and more why/was it necessary to.

Hoy en dia hay 45,000 judios en España, mayoritariamente en Madrid y Barcelona. Sin embargo, al menos, el 25% de los españoles son de origen judio, unos 10,000,000.

También, existen colegios judios de educación primaria y secundaria en Madrid, Barcelona y Melilla.

Hoy en dia, hay más de 30 sinagogas en España. 

Además de contar con sinagogas judías, en España existen cementerios judíos en ciudades como Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Málaga, Melilla, Ceuta, Palma de Mallorca y Benidorm.

Especialmente triste en un momento como hoy, la fachada del cementerio judío de Madrid apareció con pintadas antisemitas y neonazis en diciembre de 2020.

Sin embargo, actos como estos ocurren en todas partes del mundo. En España existe libertad de culto, los judios celebran todas sus fiestas, no están limitados por nada, ni por nadie. Hay un respeto total al pueblo judio en esa sociedad. La época en la que estaban perseguidos ya pasó.Su cultura está integrada en todos los aspectos de la vida en España, especialmente en la comida. Muchos de las comidas que comen los judíos están relacionados con sus conexiones con la religión. Los judíos se rigen por la Tora del Antiguo Testamento. Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah: La madurez de los jóvenes, 12 y 13 anos. Cuando los muchachos judios tienen 13 años tienen los derechos y obligaciones de un judio adulto incluyendo los mandamientos de la Torá. Es una gran fiesta para los jóvenes judios.

Los judíos llegaron al nuevo mundo en el primer viaje de Cristóbal Colón, desde España a América. Había al menos 6 judios en aquel primer viaje.

Hoy en dia, existen unos 300,000 judios en America Latina. Las mayores comunidades están en Argentina y Brasil. Argentina es la tercera comunidad judía más grande del mundo, después de Estados Unidos y Canadá. Bolivia también tuvo un importante número de judios . asi como Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, México y resto de países Hispanohablantes.

Los judíos han estado geográficamente dispersos, pero la cultura judía ha mantenido su unidad en Latinoamérica.

Voy a hablar sobre el significado, la función y cómo se usa la Torá

La Torá es el texto sagrado del pueblo judío. Los judíos creen que Dios le dijo a Moisés toda la Torá en el Monte Sinaí, y que Moisés escribió sus palabras exactas en lo que los judíos llaman la Torá. La Torá se refiere a los cinco libros de Moisés. Estos son: Génesis, Éxodo, Levítico, Números y Deuteronomio. Los judíos creen que la Torá muestra cómo Dios quiere que vivan. Contiene 613 mandamientos y los judíos se refieren a los más conocidos como las diez declaraciones.

Para los judíos, no hay "Antiguo Testamento". Los libros que los cristianos llaman el Nuevo Testamento no son parte de las escrituras judías. El Antiguo Testamento es conocido por los judíos como la Torá escrita o el Tanaj. Las escrituras que usamos en los servicios están escritas en pergaminos, y siempre están escritas a mano en atractiva caligrafía hebrea con "coronas" en muchas de las letras. No se supone que toques el pergamino en estos pergaminos; algunos dicen porque son demasiado santos;

algunos dicen porque el pergamino, hecho de pieles de animales, es una fuente de contaminación ritual; otros dicen porque el sudor de tus dedos tiene aceites que dañarán el pergamino con el tiempo. En cambio, se supone que los judíos deben seguir el texto con un puntero, llamado yad, que significa mano en hebreo. Es por eso que el puntero generalmente tiene la forma de una mano con un dedo índice que apunta.

Los pergaminos de la Torá se mantienen cubiertos con tela, y a menudo adornados con coronas de plata en las manijas de los pergaminos y un corazon de plata en la parte delantera. Los pergaminos se guardan en un gabinete en la sinagoga llamado un "arca", como en el Arca de la Alianza, no como en el Arca de Noé. El blog de Rabee y Michaels sobre la música y su efecto en América Latina es muy interesante y está conectado con nuestro blog. La influencia de la música española en América Latina se cruza con la cultura judía, especialmente a través del movimiento "Nueva Canción". Violeta Parra, una figura destacada de este movimiento, utilizó su música para abordar problemas sociales prevalentes en Chile, reflejando la lucha de la comunidad judía por los derechos y la igualdad. Artistas contemporáneos como Bad Bunny y Shakira continúan esta tradición. La canción de Bad Bunny "Estamos Bien" sirvió como homenaje a las víctimas de un devastador huracán en Puerto Rico, resonando profundamente en el diverso tapiz cultural de la isla, que incluye una importante población judía. Conexión de otro Blog.

El blog de Ryan y Jared sobre la preservación del medio ambiente es en realidad muy similar a nuestro post. Mientras Jared y Ryan hablan sobre la preservación de la tierra, James y yo estamos tratando de mostrar lo importante que es hablar de la historia judía en América Latina. Estamos tratando de mostrar la importancia de preservar esta historia porque es muy importante para la comunidad judía en su conjunto. Además su post hablando de la belleza de la tierra en estos países se conecta a nuestro post porque James y yo estamos tratando de demostrar que a pesar de la cantidad de antisemitismo en el mundo la historia del pueblo judío en América Latina es increíble. Mi intención para este proyecto era no solo educar sino también encontrar algo que fuera importante para que mis compañeros de clase lo escucharan. Al igual que proteger el ambiente es importante, aprender sobre la historia de las diferentes etnias también es crucial. Especialmente cuando estudiar América latina en su conjunto tener un conocimiento de una gama es importante que los temas son importantes, que es otra manera en que nuestros posts son similares en su objetivo de educar a la clase, con estos temas muy importantes.

La primera vez que la música hispana fue usó para cambiar social fue en los 1960s y 1970s cuando "nueva canción" fue popular. Las palabras en nueva canción hablaban sobre problemas en países españoles como: probreza, democracia, derechos humanos, y libertad religioso. Un ejemplo es Violeta Parra, un cantador quien cantó canciones sobre los condiciones sociales malos en Chile. Un otro ejemplo de un cantador quien defendiendo cambiar social es Bad Bunny. Bad Bunny es posiblemente el cantador más famoso en el mundo y tiene muchos seguidores.  En 2017, fue un huracán muy terrible en Puerto Rico que mató mas de 3000 personas y costó el país más de 94 miliones dolores. Un año despues, Bad Bunny hizo el canción que se llama "Estamos Bien" dedicado a los victimos de la huracán y las personas en Puerto Rico usó el canción para inspiración. Además, Bad Bunny es un defender de los derechos de las mujeres y los derechos de los homosexuales. Hizo un canción que se llama "Solo de Mi" que prestar atención a abuso domestico y el abuso de las mujeres. También, era en el "Jimmy Fallon Show" y prestar atención a violencia a la comunidad LGBTQ. Una otra cantador muy famosa quien influencia cambiar social es Shakira. Shakira es una leyenda en la industria musical, tiene 13 canciones que fue numero uno, hizo el canción oficial para la Copa Mundial en 2010 que se llama "Waka Waka," y fue en el Super Bowl en 2020 con Jennifer Lopez. Además su popularidad, Shakira hace mucho cambiar social. Cuando tenía 18 años, hizo la fundación, "Piez Descalzos" que ofrece educación y nutrición para muchos niños pobres en Colombia, su país de hogar. En conclusión, hay mucho trabajar que necesitan estar hacer, pero hay muchos cantadores hispanas que están ayudando. Esto post es sobre la significa que la música popular hablada en espaneol que utilice raíces culturas auténticas, para el mundo de habla hispana. 

El primero ejemplo para esto es Becky G. Becky es una famosa artista Mexicano Estadouunidense. Hizo su álbum “Esquinas” que incorpora la cultura mexicana de su familia en sus canciones. Ella dice que el álbum es una carta de amor a sus abuelas y a otras personas como ella que se encuentran en medio de dos culturas diferentes. Becky G quería que el álbum incluyera sonidos tradicionales como trompetas, guitarra acústica y tololoche. Estos sonidos únicos, junto con su éxito pasado como artista pop, crean una mezcla de sonido muy especial. En una canción llamada "Querido Abuelo", habla de su su familia y las personas que ama.

Hay muchos otros artistas de habla espaneol que utilizan aspectos importantes de sus culturas en música. Un ejemplo es Camila Cabello que también usa su herencia cultural en un álbum reciente. Su álbum “Familia” tiene la herencia cubana. Una cita de Camila Cabello que representa la importancia de la música de habla hispana en la cultura pop es: "siendo una mujer litania en los Estados Unidos, la música para mí es un ancla de quién soy".

¿Por qué es importante que los artistas hispanohablantes incorporen la cultura española? Esta respuesta puede responderse con tres razones. Primero, cuando otras partes del mundo escuchan y ven la auténtica cultura española, pueden apreciarla. Las representaciones culturales en la música son muy directas. No está filtrado para adaptarse a una narrativa. Además, crea un mejor ambiente para los nuevos artistas españoles. Si los niños pequeños ven a aquellos que hablan el mismo idioma que ellos, se sentirán inspirados. Finalmente, a medida que la música española crezca en el futuro, los problemas y cuestiones que son importantes en el mundo de habla hispana tendrán voz.

Una parte importante de nuestro blog es cómo se representa la cultura hispana en los medios estadounidenses.
