Caleb tries to apologize (!) to Beau for hurting her feelings (!!) back at Yussa’s tower by explaining to her that he is terrified of powerful mages because if they sell him out to the Cerberus Assembly he is dead, and also by expressing in his Caleby way that he is grappling with the now-inescapable (he tried so hard to escape it) fact that he once again has loved ones because he cannot bear (again) to be responsible for their deaths, as he surely will be if he is found, and Beau misconstrues this as Caleb distrusting/rejecting/discounting her the M9 because as much as she has grown she still reflexively expects to be rejected at any moment by people she cares about, and all of that is extremely good character shit but the thing I really can’t get past is how good Liam and Marisha are at this?? Like, I already knew how good Liam is, but this was a real standout moment from Marisha for me. Liam drops Caleb’s whole trauma in her lap and she processes it and comes out with a nuanced, believable, and perfectly in-character misunderstanding without missing a beat.
Then in the next episode when Caleb spills his guts to the whole team, Beau recognizes her mistake and what drove it and apologizes (!!!) to Caleb, and you know what that is, that’s growth. And THEN, when Caleb says, wracked with guilt and shame, that he’s been using them, she pushes him on it - how has he been using them - and it’s so clear that while months earlier that would have been a defensive, how-dare-you demand it is now i-am-calling-you-on-your-bullshit tough love. She sees him, and it’s great.
I guess what I am saying is that I did not expect to love Beau as much as I do, but here we are.
