There’s only so many times one could break into someone’s home and not learn her way around the place. A placating gift of dusty first-editions that she didn’t even check the title of lay piled on the counter. The kettle was boiled, a cup of tea brewed – nothing like what he could do of course, but then abandoned beside the stove. Goggles thrown aside, clawed gloves shed haphazardly along the floor, then boots. The messy culprit lay curled up in a bruised and battered mass of leather-clad dejection and feeling-sorry-for-herself-ness on the couch, staring at the wall ahead of her.

Crane’s house was much nicer than her dingy apartment, and right now she wanted the illusion of homeliness. Not that her apartment wasn’t home… Not that…

She wanted company, alright?

But at the same time, she didn’t. Crane could just ignore her and putter around her, right? Just let her feel in a lived-in home?

One that didn’t have shadows in the corner that made her compulsively turn on the light.

One that didn’t try to pressure her into living a better life…

Am I getting old? What an awful thought. She was barely touching her thirties. But aches and pains aside, her life didn’t give her the same joy it once did. The same sense of liberty. No, she almost felt like she had a duty now, to protect people. To keep them safe from the things that went bump in the night.

Selina closed her eyes and buried her face in her palms. Christ Almighty. “Am I becoming like him?”

It had to be a mistake…

Her fingers moved to where the blade stuck out of her flesh, fingers instantly slick - with the emergency lights bathing them both in riot red her blood looked black as it coated her hands and soaked through her scrubs.

“W-why?” She asked, voice cracking with betrayal as she lifted her gaze to Jonathan’s face, her eyebrows pinched tight together in pain above confused eyes. It was possible he was desperate to escape - but what possible benefit did stabbing her afford him?
