Childs & Inman was one of Philadelphia's earliest lithography shops located at 4th and Walnut between 1830 and 1833. It was a partnership between Cephas G. Childs who was an engraver and lithographer, and Henry Inman who was a portrait painter.
Feast your eyes on this Childs and Inman crayon stone lithograph. For me, this is the premier example of how to execute traditional crayon work. It's the kind of print that makes you sigh when you see it in person (which I was lucky enough to get to). Click on this link to enlarge it, and really look at how the rich, soft black breaks down and dissolves into the underlaying hatch marks on the coat.
You can see this print in person at the Library Company of Philadelphia at 13th and Locust.
