the boon of possessing a greater length of memories, besides the embittered state of constant nostalgia, would definitely be the fact that he doesn’t forget names. faces. those whom he has encountered are embedded into the mind. ethereal, dead or alive. he recalls them too vividly at times, and tonight, it is of no exception. he stumbles upon beidou’s crew member, the name painted clear before him. kazuha. kaedehara kazuha, whispered into the wind weeks, months prior, but xiao’s sharp recollection doesn’t betray him. 

there is an entire herd of treasure hoarders surrounding the so-called ronin. xiao’s knowledge might be limited, but sufficient. he’s heard of the rumours about kazuha being a wanted man throughout inazuma during the vision hunt decree, fleeing the country. as a refugee in liyue, xiao happened to stumble upon him one night when he was assisting beidou’s ship from the rampaging demons in guyun stone forest. but this, it is different. there’s an entire situation of the samurai, now surrounded, his sword nowhere near him. the proximity of the sword is none, and so, xiao moves forward, taking the matter into his own hands.

his spear punctures into the night, the elimination of the opponents a quick one. he doesn’t intend to kill any of them, letting them scamper away from the scene. a plunge. two. he sighs after the last of their backs are gone from his sight, and regards kazuha then. he wills his yaksha mask to vanish as he looks at kazuha, wondering if the marring sight would mean anything. “it isn’t like you to not have a weapon with you,” xiao decides, his comment unsolicited, but he deems it necessary. “kazuha,” this time, a taste of the name of his tongue. “i met you before, on the alcor.” but he was veiled then, his past conversation with beidou succinct. tonight, however, there’s no urgent call to exterminate demons, so xiao believes he can linger a tad longer to ensure kazuha’s safety.
