“Sorry, D. I got caught up at the shop, so I couldn’t get to the dispo before it closed, and all I’ve got on me is that stuff you said makes you wanna vomit--” Graham had already removed the joint from behind his ear, free hand patting the pockets of his jeans for the lighter he swore he’d stashed there on his last cigarette break. There was little need for ceremony when it came to these dinners with his sister: “dinner” being a fairly loose term, since food was mostly an afterthought, a side effect of whatever it was they divulged in that night. More often than not, it was just the two on her couch, joint passing easily back and forth between fingers, mindless television on in the background. A comfortable silence Graham couldn’t share with anybody else, the kind of bond only strengthened by blood.

So, when he crossed the threshold of the trailer, he was not prepared for the sight of Arden at the set kitchen table, Drew across from him, with an empty place setting in between them. A proper family dinner, like they were the fucking Brady Bunch or something. Or The Brady Bunch, if they were missing a sibling and their parents were dead. Graham stopped in his tracks, looking between Arden, the empty place setting, Drew, the door he’d just walked through...contemplating his options, what consequences he’d rather deal with.

Graham couldn’t remember when this had become a thing that they did. Some time after their parents had died, he knew that much--when their grandfather had received custody of him and Sadie, and the anxiety that Graham had carried with him since being an even younger child grew tenfold at not only the death of his parents, but the thought of being raised by Nathan. He’d done his best to hide it, to keep it inside, Sadie being only seven. Though Graham was barely four years older than his sister, he knew that as an older brother, he had to stay strong for her, the way Arden had for him, for Julie. But Arden, being that older brother, could see right through it. Knew what plagued Graham’s thoughts during the day and nightmares when he slept, and knew it without him even needing to speak it. The drive in tradition had been born shortly after.

Skull didn’t have a drive in. It didn’t even have a movie theater, so once a month, the two Bishop brothers would find themselves skipping a couple towns over. It’d been Arden who drove those first years, but around the time Graham had turned sixteen, the drive to the outdoor theater had been some of his first lessons behind the wheel. He’d been prepared to drive that night, but when Arden had headed for the drivers seat, Graham hadn’t protested. This would be their last drive in for awhile, so it was only fitting that they’d come full circle. Once eleven and twenty five, now eighteen and thirty two.

It was a “Flying Saucer Double Feature”, as advertised when they’d turned in. The 27th Day and Earth vs The Flying Saucers, both sci fi cult classics from the fifties. Graham lived for this kind of stuff--movies most would consider to be cringey or plain old today. And Arden, to his credit, never complained when Graham would spend more time talking through a movie than watching it, or call him a loser for knowing the littlest of details about them, or complain that it was boring or in black and white or didn’t make sense. He merely took Graham for who he was, and after years of living in a home under the oppressive care of their grandfather, that’d never stopped feeling like such a relief to the younger Bishop.

“You know--” He always started like this (you know), cracking open his second can of beer than they’d snuck in, taking a quick sip before the foam fizzled out the top before gesturing to the screen with the can still in hand. The fact that followed rarely ever was one that Arden knew. “There’s, like, a gaping plot hole in this. The Alien assumes that humanity will do one of two things, right? Either use the weapons given and destroy themselves, leaving the Earth open for occupation, or they don’t, and the alien species dies out. But there’s actually a third option that’s way more likely.” He raised his eyebrows for dramatic effect, like waiting for his older brother to ask him what? What’s the third option? But Graham didn’t have the patience and continued even without prompting. “All the people abducted in the beginning were from the Northern hemisphere, so it makes more sense that the major powers use the weapons to attack each other...either in retaliation or pre-emptively, and it doesn’t matter because it only wipes out all human life in a 3,000 mile radius. There’s still millions of people in, like, the other part of the world who remained unfazed.”
