Utopia K67
In his novel Blindness Jose Saramago narrate a story of a plague that affects the city so the encounters between inhabitants become increasingly frightening. The immense absurdity of the capital development of the contemporary city recalls Saramago's apocalyptic vision of the development affected by an epidemic of white blindness.
Tumblr media
How will we live together when public spaces are sold out? The story is a parable of the fear of the unknown - is it war, isolation or just the fear of being to close to each other?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Public talks in K67 with local cultural and political figures transmitted live on-air of Independent Coastal Radio NOR.
The utopia starts in projects that are going beyond the expected rules. It points out the neuralgic problems of the location and seeks the analysis of the current state of matter. One of the utopias stands in a small Slovenian coastal town Koper - in a public square where a parking lot is situated on the most prominent position next to the sea.
Tumblr media
The utopia - K67 kiosk, designed by Saša Mächtig in 1967, concludes its story with the absurdity of the use of the public square next to the sea in favor of parking. As the writer and journalist Martin Reichert, to whom we dedicated this project, would say, “it is a parking lot with the most beautiful view in the world."
Tumblr media
K67 is one of the best examples of design during the former Yugoslavia. In the context of the presentation in the public space, with the help of the owner Coastal Galleries Piran, it was placed on the square in Koper in December 2021, in order to become a new generator for its urban content.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
From spring to late autumn 2023, a process of tactical and performative urbanism took part in the K67 in favour to create an inclusive public space. The main concept proposed and elaborated within the municipality was based on the change of the current parking lot on the square into a green community space.
Tumblr media
Unfinished project Solis was more than ten years a failure of a PPP concept. After COVID the investor succeeded to add two more floors of the private apartments.
Tactical urbanism is the opposite of investment urbanism, which has a dispersed structure of activity in space and builds various, mainly residential buildings that sell well, but without a well-thought-out placement in the context of the city. The last plan for Koper was signed by the architect Edo Mihevc in the 1960s.
Tumblr media
Urban Plan for Koper, Edo Mihevc (1961). | Source © Neža Čebron Lipovec
Tumblr media
The renovation of the new roof for the city market was executed via the municipality but without a public competition.
Today it looks like investor urbanism is much faster than the concept of town planning per se. This results in a fact that there is no more urban planning in the city of Koper today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The farm market with live animals in plastic tent on Ukmarjev square shows the discrepancy of communication between the municipality and experts.
In Koper as in other towns across the Adriatic coast there is an obvious pressure from investor urbanism. Public spaces are mostly touristized, privatized and don’t belong to dwellers anymore. Therefore is important to ensure that buildings are not built without public competitions. The K67 stays a reminder of a utopia that shall make aware of the importance of reuse and creation of community spaces.
Tumblr media
The cruise ships don't need to pay tax in Koper so instead of Venice, were are banned are welcomed for a pollution of cruise tourism.
Tumblr media
The utopia K67 is dedicated to the writer and journalist Martin Reichert.

Our first weekend in Zadar
After days of hard work during our internship, we dove into the weekend with an exciting plan. Every day, we went for a walk to fully admire Zadar. Luckily for us, the cruise ship "Azamara Pursuit" had just sailed into Zadar, and we all underestimated how massive it was (180 meters long).
With the temperature reaching 27°C that day, we decided to go for a swim in the Adriatic Sea. We found an enormous diving board where we could freely take a plunge, reaching heights of up to 10 meters.
After this delightful discovery, we had a great evening and later in the night, we went for a stunning night walk that truly showcased the beauty of Zadar.

Japan evaluates purchase of up to 500 Tomahawk missiles
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/03/2022 - 16:15 in Armaments, Military
Japan is considering buying up to 500 Tomahawk cruise missiles manufactured in the U.S. by March 2028, while accelerating preparations to improve counterattack capabilities.
Tokyo continues its largest accumulation of weapons since World War II in the face of Beijing's rapid military modernization, with North Korea firing dozens of missiles at the island nation this year, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Asked about Yomiuri's report, the chief secretary of the cabinet, Hirokazu Matsuno, said that no decision was made about anything.
Tumblr media
Japan plans to review its national security strategy, as well as other important defense postures by the end of the year. Japan has already declared that it plans to expand the range of ground-based missiles as part of a new strategy to give its military the ability to target distant targets at sea and on land.
The Tomahawk missile can hit targets at a distance of more than 1,000 kilometers, putting parts of China and the Russian Far East within reach.
The daily Nikkei reported separately this month that Japan is also considering the deployment of hypersonic missiles (more times the speed of sound) by 2030 to increase deterrence.

Captain Martini in the Ionian Sea
Sunday 27th August 2023 - S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Tastings)
We’re now at sea en-route to Malta and we have a ‘proper’ day at sea. I was hoping for some ‘wave action’ to see how Silver Nova handles but it’s placid seas as far as the eye can see.
Tumblr media
Yesterday evening though, the ‘First Timers’ Cocktail Party in the Dolce Vita Lounge was a surprisingly lively affair, with far more ‘first timers’ than we expected.
Tumblr media
Indeed it was so lively that poor vocalist Nosi’s beautiful rendering of ‘The first time ever I saw your face’ was quite drowned out – she deserved so much better from her audience.
Tumblr media
For dinner we tried S.A.L.T. Kitchen, the other open seating restaurant on board and it’s a good job I took this photo before we sat down because within 15 minutes the place was packed - probably everyone like us from that cocktail party!
Tumblr media
The Sea And Land Tasting menu includes a daily selection (Terrain Menu) inspired by the port or country you are visiting that day, while the rest of the menu (Voyage Menu) has selections related to the regions of your voyage, including variations on the usual fish and beef options.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My choices were Melitzanes Papoutsakia (Baked Stuffed Eggplant to you and me!) followed by Anatra in Salmi (Marinated Duck braised in bay, cinnamon and juniper) It was supposed to be served with Polenta, which I really do not like, so I had Rosemary Potatoes instead. Very nice. Unfortunately, having had too much pizza for lunch, none of us could face dessert!
Tumblr media
Andrew and Angie made their donations to the Casino after that while I enjoyed my coffee and Cointreau listening to Ukrainian violinist Annet in the (now much more sedate than earlier) Dolce Vita Lounge before going into the show by David Howarth, pianist and showman. Think North of England imitates Liberace and you have it, sort of. He was quite good.

Tourists Engulf Montenegro’s Adriatic Gem – In Pictures
Kotor, A UNESCO World Heritage Site (Town in Montenegro), is Struggling to Cope with a Rise in Visitors Clogging Its Narrow Streets and Raising Environmental Concerns. Stevo Vasiljević/Reuters. Additional Reporting by Aleksandar Vasovic
— Monday 12 August 2024 | The Guardian USA
Tumblr media
Cruise Ships Navigate the Bay of Kotor. Each Can Carry a Huge Number of Passengers.
Tumblr media
Tourists gather at Gurdić Gate in Kotor’s old town. Visitors arrive each day from hundreds of boats, yachts and cruise ships that dock in the harbour, leading some to call for a hike in the €1 fee to enter Kotor charged to people from cruise ships
Tumblr media
While tourism contributes to about a quarter of Montenegro’s economic output, Kotor’s 23,000 inhabitants are feeling the strain. ‘Traffic jams are huge,’ said Doris Dajkovic, who works in a souvenir shop
Tumblr media
Kotor featured in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale
Tumblr media
A series of protests against excessive tourism has erupted this year in European destinations including Venice, Barcelona and Santorini
Tumblr media
Cruise ships ferrying thousands of visitors navigate the Bay of Kotor. The number of annual arrivals has risen steadily over the past decade, with about 500 cruise ships expected this year. Last Wednesday, four ships carrying about 5,000 tourists each moored in the town
Tumblr media
Local people say too many visitors drive up housing costs – pricing residents out of the market – and cause congestion and other environmental problems
Tumblr media
‘Our neighbours’ lives are becoming increasingly difficult during the tourist season,’ said Jovan Ristić, the director of the local tourist organisation, who backs an increase in the cruise ship visitor fee. ‘All similar tourist destinations are working on reducing or selecting passenger ships and seriously collecting excursion fees,’ he added
Tumblr media
In neighbouring Croatia, the Unesco-listed resort of Dubrovnik introduced a ‘Respect the city’ plan in 2017, capping the number of cruise visitors to 4,000 at any given time
Tumblr media
The rise in mass tourism is also taking a toll on Kotor’s marine environment. Milica Mandić, a scientific adviser at Montenegro’s Institute of Marine Biology, said: ‘Such a number of cruisers requires a study to determine the maximum environmental load’
