okay so fully removing the ship lenses and assuming they're not wishing any hostility towards Oscar or any future teammate of Lando's at McLaren: holy SHIT no. fuckballs NOOOO.

ok from a purely practical/realism standpoint Carlos will not be taking any steps backward. based purely on Ferrari's overall performance and the fact that Charles is a damn good match as a teammate (hi Singapore) Carlos is exactly where he should be for WDC contention. McLaren are out there competing hard with them and with the Mercs but to see them outpacing those cars would be solely down to the youth and combined competitiveness of Lando and Oscar they've invested in - so still no dice for Carlos in the foreseeable. I'm not F1 smart enough to know how likely it would be that he'd go to RBR but even there I'm not sure how he and Max would work together again with Max's dominance and ummmm Carlos' least favorite thing being following team orders to concede to his teammate. followed by what would become Carlos' first least favorite thing which would be to drive Max's car since development only works one way at RBR. and that's all assuming that Lando stays with McLaren and that Oscar chooses to leave. the first being reasonably likely and the second is too soon to tell. then there's the fact that by that point Lando would not be considered McLaren youth anymore and they'd be highly unlikely to bring on someone even older to partner him. ((add to that the fact that Carlos will never be an Alonso and will definitely get married early in his thirties and move on to different types of racing or maybe even a different field in racing)) Lando will be a Lewis and stick with F1 competitively chasing wins and WDCs (especially if he can outlast Max's boredom threshold) and he won't be interested in nostalgia hires unless they can help him with that goal.

but moving on to the more parasocial fandom side of it…

honestly the biggest surprise to me is seeing people think that they were equals ??? during their season together?? Lando was a tiny baby who has talked about how being partnered with Carlos fed his anxieties and insecurities! he saw this seasoned driver learning the car faster than him, knowing the circuits better than him and speaking to the team with more confidence than him. lbr when his "trophy" was Carlos' champagne while Carlos celebrated his podium, Lando did NOT look completely happy being forced into that celebration (and I seem to recall later on him even ruefully saying "it wasn't my celebration but anyway"). Carlos literally saw Lando as a baby brother and treated him as such but he also had no clue what to do with Lando's darker moods besides try to cheer him up (and sometimes fail).

I am someone who likes to keep the streams of real life and rpf totally crystal clear and separate and I also like to keep the reality of who these drivers are free of anything I imagine about them for fantasy. when Carlos isn't winning or at least happy with his result, he isn't remotely a team player (and with a team like Ferrari it's hard to blame him sometimes lol). I guess for some people? it's easy to think that Carlos would become a totally different driver when on a team with Lando from ~the power of love~… but that would also have to hand-wave when he actually was Lando's teammate. (it would also hand-wave that Carlos and Charles are also good friends and much more flirty and lovey dovey but Carlos still fights against Charles like a beast when he's in the car)

this man is in it to win it. if you called him soft for a teammate or said that the foremost reason he gave Lando DRS in Singapore was for Lando's benefit he would laugh in your face. at no point in the incredibly stressful final laps was Carlos going "aw shucks I hope my lil buddy can be up there with me let me rig this to make it happen" bc by that point in a race they are thinking in nothing but driving binary and /how do I cement my win against all the bastards behind me/. Carlos does NOT revolve even a small part of his racing career around Lando or any other driver. he doesn't even regard much of his team's input (again, probably for the best with Ferrari). even when he gets direct help from Charles following Ferrari strategy (see Singapore) I still can't really recall that he was overly effusive in acknowledging that fact. he's modeled himself much more on the F1 generations of more like two generations back. and why shouldn't he? so I do not get how people can still think that drivers - especially Carlos' type - are remotely friendly with anyone when they're on the circuit. sure they might get even more pissed off at a driver they aren't keen on but literally /everyone/ is their enemy and their own result is their one goal. that's literally their job.

and as Lando says himself, no one in F1 including him wants to beat anyone more than their own teammate. again. how do people think that Lando would take this entire career he's worked so incredibly hard for and make it about a guy he golfs with (in groups, folks) and occasionally goes to dinner with (which he also does with Daniel) and talks to during the drivers parade (he also consistently seeks out Max, George and Yuki) but has a thriving professional and social life that has nothing to do with Carlos? yuk|erre, maxie| and ga|ex are out there doing far more shippy type things than car|ando all the damn time but when have they ever let that affect their desire to win or beat each other??

nothing about little unseasoned raw lamb cutlet Lando with hairy alpha Carlos at McLaren at all resembles what their dynamic would be as teammates. and the fact that Lando is really liking this new feeling of being the superior favored driver bodes horribly for how he'd react to Carlos swinging his huge sexy cojones back into McLaren expecting to be the number one again by age and experience. folks should enjoy getting to see them during the drivers parade and out golfing as non teammates bc the adorable content of 2019 would curdle into something grotesque if they now had to do goofy challenges while slowly learning to hate the sight of each other during briefings as they sought to supplant the other in the standings.

in no way on this or any other earthly planes can I be convinced that having them compete on the same team again would be anything other than a trainwreck and result in them not even speaking for the next 10-15 years.

AD STARS AWARDS 2019 – SHORTLISTS NOW LIVE!

AD STARS is pleased to reveal this year’s finalists, which are in the running to win Grand Prix, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Crystal trophies at the 2019 AD STARS Awards on Saturday 24th August.

From 20,645 entries, a total of 1,811 campaigns have been shortlisted by 220 preliminary judges around the world. 

Cheil Worldwide in Hong Kong has the highest number of finalists. Thailand is the country with the most finalists (212), followed by Japan (181) and Australia (132). Brazil has seen the biggest increase year-on-year in finalists of 214% (from 37 last year to 116 finalists this year), followed by United Arab Emirates (up 185% from 20 finalists last year to 57 this year) and India (up 68% from 53 finalists last year to 89 this year).    

Lydia Lee, Assistant Manager of AD STARS, says many of this year’s most shortlisted ideas are executed in unconventional ways – such as Burger King’s ‘The Whopper Detour’ (FCB New York) and Foxtel’s 2000 square metre ‘Grave of Thrones’ (DDB/The Glue Society Sydney).

Brands that are tackling political, environmental or human rights issues for social good have also performed well. Finalists include: The Blank Edition (Impact BBDO Dubai), Street Grace’s Stop Traffick (BBDO Atlanta) and Truck Art Childfinder (BBDO Pakistan).

“Using data, campaigns are becoming more scientific and clever in a good way. ‘The time we have left’ by Leo Burnett Madrid for Pernod Ricard’s Ruavieja liqueur and AAMI’s ‘Warning Spots’ by Ogilvy Melbourne are two standout examples,” says Lee.

AD STARS is judged in three phases: last month, a global panel of 220 preliminary judges voted on this year’s shortlists.

“We would like to thank our preliminary judges for their hard work and dedication. Together, they critiqued 20,645 entries – it was a huge job, and we thank you for your support of AD STARS,” says Lee.

The second phase of judging runs from 10th to 17th July when 35 Final Judges will begin online judging. On 19th August, 5 Executive Judges and 35 Final Judges will arrive in Busan to select this year’s winners, including two Grand Prix of the Year winners, which receive US$10,000 apiece.

“We aim to be a festival for everyone interested in creativity, not just for those working in the advertising industry. It’s the reason part of our show is open to the general public, free-of-charge, and it’s also the reason why everyone is eligible to enter the AD STARS Awards – even non-professionals. The more people who take an interest in the ingenuity of the global creative industries, the stronger our industry will be,” explains Hwan Jin Choi, Chairman of the AD STARS Executive Committee.

All winners will be announced at the 2019 AD STARS Awards gala dinner at BEXCO’s Grand Ballroom on 24th August.

Simon McMenemy – the best British coach you’ve never heard of?

Simon McMenemy was in charge as the unfancied Bhayangkara FC won the Indonesian top flight in 2017

The Indonesian top-flight season starts this weekend – and a Scottish coach you may not have heard of is about to begin the defence of his title.

Simon McMenemy’s journey from English non-league football to championship-winning manager in Indonesia is certainly a road less travelled.

Along the way, he has changed the football fortunes of the Philippines, dealt with false promises in Vietnam, chased snakes from his home in the Borneo jungle and coached a former team-mate of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Now he wants his chance back home – but can he catch the attention of clubs in the UK?

A fairytale in the Philippines

The story began in West Sussex back in 2010, when McMenemy had a chance Facebook conversation with two Filipino brothers, Simon and Paul Greatwich, who he had coached at Burgess Hill Town in the eighth tier of English football.

The pair told him that the Philippines national team job was vacant and McMenemy, despite being the 32-year-old assistant manager of non-league Worthing, audaciously threw his hat into the ring.

Remarkably, the Philippines Football Federation was convinced. He packed his bags and left the south coast of England for South East Asia.

McMenemy’s first task was to guide the Philippines to the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup – the region’s major international championship. The team was nicknamed the Azkals, after the mongrel dogs that roam the country’s streets, and it was a fitting moniker given their lowly football standing.

Under the Scot, however, they flourished. He led the Philippines all the way to the semi-finals, where they fell narrowly to Indonesia. But McMenemy and his team had won a host of admirers.

“We only realised the change in outlook that had happened when we got back,” McMenemy told BBC Sport. “There were a huge amount of people there at the airport to greet us. There were cameras, everyone was doing interviews. It felt like the birth of a new sport in the Philippines.

“It really changed the football landscape. The last six or seven years since that happened, football has exploded. There’s now a professional league up and running, and the club that wins the league qualifies for the Asian Champions League. That all stemmed from our success. We were the snowball pushed off the top of the cliff.

“It really was a fairytale.”

The fairytale quickly turned sour, however, as McMenemy – despite his managerial heroics – was dumped weeks after the end of the tournament in favour of German coach Michael Weiss.

Landing a job on Twitter – it didn’t last

What followed is best described as a journeyman few years for McMenemy, who took up club jobs in Vietnam, Indonesia and the Maldives – the latter of which saw the club owner initiate contact, and then seal the deal, via Twitter.

It brought many eye-opening experiences, including a memorable first spell in Indonesia, in the heart of the jungle in Kalimantan – where controlling the population of snakes in his garden proved as challenging as controlling his players. The daily serpent chase was not something he had had to face in the South Downs.

On the pitch, McMenemy’s spell in Borneo began with a bang in a dramatic local derby.

“Late in the game the referee gave our opponents a corner,” he recalls. “There was a huge pitch invasion because their fans thought it was handball and should have been a penalty.

“The police eventually got them back in the stands – and then the referee changed his mind and gave a pen. Our goalkeeper saved it and, of course, there was another pitch invasion. It was carnage.

“We were pushed into the centre circle and armed police surrounded us as a full scale riot with 15,000 fans happened around us. Just another day in the Indonesian League!”

The chaos of that first match was indicative of what was to come as the job in Borneo, and another in Java, ended prematurely. Performances were good but the political game proved a stumbling block.

A return to the Philippines with Manila-based Loyola Meralco Sparks in 2014 brought more stability – but two years later, McMenemy was ready to throw himself back into the lions’ den.

The Indonesian Leicester City?

In January 2017, he joined Bhayangkara FC in the newly rebranded Indonesian Liga 1.

“I knew that I had one more chance,” said McMenemy. “I saw an opportunity to redeem myself and although Bhayangkara were a mid-table team – an unfancied team at best – I believed I could get them playing.”

McMenemy set about crafting his new side, with one of the first major decisions being which marquee player to sign. Former Premier League players Michael Essien, Peter Odemwingie and Didier Zokora are among those to turn out in Indonesian football in recent years – but Bhayangkara’s new boss was after more than star power.

“In my first spell in Indonesia I signed Marcus Bent from Birmingham. He was an incredible guy, a lovely bloke, but he took a lot of time to manage on and off the pitch because he was new to Indonesia and found the new surroundings difficult.

“I wanted to avoid that again – why sign Robin van Persie if you have to focus all your time on helping Robin van Persie settle in Indonesia? It’s not fair on the other players.”

McMenemy brought Marcus Bent to Indonesia from Birmingham – and learned lessons from the experience

Instead of a Flying Dutchman, McMenemy turned to a poised Portuguese. The arrival of Paulo Sergio, a midfielder who came up through the ranks of Sporting’s fabled academy with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, was a masterstroke.

Sergio had starred under ex-Blackburn boss Steve Kean as Brunei DPMM won Singapore’s S.League in 2015 and he quickly became the glue that held McMenemy’s young side together.

A motivated coach bred a motivated group of players and the wins kept coming.

With three games of the season to go, Bhayangkara were top and locked in a three-way title battle with Bali United and PSM Makassar, clubs with deeper pockets and bigger fanbases.

“No-one expected us to be challenging for the title but I wouldn’t say this was another Leicester City story. We weren’t a counter-attacking team – we played attractive football and dominated games. The belief was always there and with a couple of games of the season to go, we were top and fighting hard to stay there.

“Then we had a huge slice of luck.”

In a 1-1 away draw at McMenemy’s former club Mitra Kukar, ex-Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko played for the hosts despite being suspended. The Indonesian FA awarded Bhayangkara the three points, leaving them in need of a victory in their next game to claim the league title with a match to spare.

They won that match 3-1 and celebrated as if they had won the title – but it was short-lived. Rivals Bali United had complained about the Sissoko decision and the league refused to confirm McMenemy’s side as champions until they conducted an investigation.

“We were left on tenterhooks for two to three days,” McMenemy explains. “It was horrible. Eventually, though, we got a phone call in the middle of training saying we’d won the league. It was a messy end and took the shine off things a little given how well we’d played all year. But at least we were able to lift the trophy at home on the last day of the season.”

McMenemy became the first British coach to win the Indonesian championship and, more importantly, finally proved that his initial success with the Philippines had been no fluke.

“It was an incredible relief. I still have a tweet on my phone that I saved from the day I arrived at Bhayangkara. It said: ‘Coach, you’ve been here twice. Why would you come back? #loser.’ That served as great motivation. Everything I learned over the past seven years – the failures and successes, all the different cultures and ideas – came together to help shape the title win.”

“There are a lot of disheartened young coaches who can’t get a look in because there is still that old school, insular circle of coaches just swapping positions.

“Where’s the new blood? Why aren’t we learning from countries like Germany, where new young coaches seem to pop up and enjoy success every year?

“A few years ago I sent across my CV for the Clyde job and spoke to the chairman on the phone. He said: ‘It’s very impressive but you have never done anything in Scotland.’ I get that he was stating the facts but I had managed a national team in front of 90,000 people in the semi-final of a tournament.

“Hopefully a time will come when I can put my CV in for a job next to the latest England international who’s just retired and people will think: ‘This guy has done a lot – let’s give him a chance.’

“I know my name might not open doors – but maybe one day my football experiences will.”
